    Abstract Cytotoxic properties of plant extracts and drugs being developed for cancer treatment are usually evaluated by a variety of in vivo and in vitro tests carried out in animal or plant based models. In the present study we have evaluated the possibility of using the germinating mung beans (Vigna radiata), for rapid and inexpensive screening of drugs exhibiting cytotoxic properties.     Abstract The purpose of the present work is to study the disc brake squeal problem for passenger cars in order to reduce the instable high frequency squeal modes. The ABAQUS/Standard implicit method was used to perform dynamic contact vibration analysis of the current disc brake finite element model.     Abstract Advantages, disadvantages and precautions of using the pressure chamber and thermocouple psychrometers for determinations of plant water potential, and osmotic and turgor pressures are discussed. Comparison of results obtained with both instruments will be influenced by the sampling technique, consistency in both sampling and measurement procedures, and errors inherent to the method itself. In-situ readings of either plant or soil water potential with thermocouple psychrometers are perhaps worthless, or worse (they may even be misleading).     Abstract In the present work, a wedge structure made of absorbing panels has been analyzed by making use of the matrizant analysis with the help of the Boundary-Condition-Transfer (BCT) algorithm.     Abstract Information on desiccation sensitivity of Euterpe edulis seeds under two drying rates is presented. The sensitivity was studied during the course of germination and normal germination. The water content was evaluated for both seeds and embryos. Results showed the following: (a) For both drying treatments and for both germination and normal germination, desiccation sensitivity values were higher for measurements based on the water content of the embryo than for those of the seed.     Abstract The primary objectives of the present exposition focus on five different types of representations of the plastic equations obtained from an elastic-perfectly plastic model by employing different corotational stress rates.     Abstract Electrophysiological events occur early after fertilization, along with changes in intracellular Ca2+ concentration . Passive electrical parameters were determined in golden hamster oocytes by whole cell patch-clamp method. In separate experiments the effect of 4-aminopyridine on resting oocytes was tested. The single-channel patch clamp configuration was employed to assess the electrical response to fertilization with homologous sperm. Structure of oocytes submitted to patch clamp was evaluated with scanning electron microscopy and found to be preserved.

    Evaluation of cytotoxic potential of latex of Calotropis procera and Podophyllotoxin in Allum cepa root model

    Abstract In the present study we have utilized the Allium cepa root tip meristem model to evaluate the cytotoxic and anti-mitotic activities of latex of Calotropis procera (DL) and podophyllotoxin. Standard cytotoxic drug cyclophosphamide and non-cytotoxic drugs cyproheptadine and aspirin served as controls. Like cyclophosphamide, both DL and podophyllotoxin significantly inhibited the growth of roots and mitotic activity in a dose-dependent manner. However, podophyllotoxin was more potent in this regard and produced root decay. Cyproheptadine and aspirin, on the other hand, showed a marginal effect on the root growth and mitotic activity at much higher concentrations. More >

    Abstract The concept of the micropolar theory is employed to investigate vibration behaviors of carbon nanotubes. The constitutive relation has been deduced from the two-dimensional analysis of the microstructure of the carbon nanotube. Van der Waals interactions are simulated by a weak spring model. Hamilton's principle is employed to obtain dynamics equations of the multi-walled carbon nanotube. Numerical examples for both single-walled and double-walled carbon nanotubes are presented and the significant difference in vibration behaviors between them has been distinguished.     Abstract The laminar steady flow of incompressible Newtonian fluid is studied in rigid pipes with cross configuration of a collapsed tube to determine both the entry length and the wall shear stress (WSS). The cross section shapes have been defined from the collapse of an infinitely long elastic tube subjected to an uniform transmural pressure.
