Abstract Numerous studies have characterized the critical role of circular RNAs (circRNAs) as regulatory factors in the progression of multiple cancers. However, the biological functions of circRNAs and their underlying molecular mechanisms in the progression of uveal melanoma (UM) remain enigmatic. In this study, we identified a novel circRNA, circ_0053943, through re-analysis of UM microarray data and quantitative RT-PCR. Circ_0053943 was found to be upregulated in UM and to promote the proliferation and metastatic ability of UM cells in both in vitro and in vivo settings. Mechanistically, circ_0053943 was observed to bind to the KH1 and KH2 domains of insulin-like growth… More > Graphic Abstract

    BIOCELL, Vol.47, No.11, pp. 2409-2422, 2023, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2023.031186

Abstract Familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) is an autosomal dominant disease with a high probability of becoming cancerous. Many RNAs potentially associated with FAP have not been identified. In this study, a circRNA (circular RNA) expression profile of FAP was established using a circRNA microarray, and differentially expressed circRNAs were verified by RT-qPCR. The effects of hsa_circ_0036740 on the malignant behavior of tumor cells (proliferation, apoptosis, and epithelial mesenchymal transition) and the levels of C3A complement protein expression were evaluated. Moreover, neutrophils were isolated and co-cultured with colorectal cancer cells (CRCs), followed by measurements of MPO-DNA, citrullinated histone H3, interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6,… More > Graphic Abstract

Abstract Background: To investigate the characteristics of circular RNA hsa-circ-0006969 in breast cancer and identify it as a novel biomarker for breast cancer. Methods: Three breast cancer (BC) patient tissues were selected to perform human circRNA microarray analysis. GeneSpring 13.0 (Agilent) software was applied for analyzing the data. Another 116 BC patients were recruited for verification. Hsa-circ-0006969 was found as a potential circRNA for BC diagnostic biomarker. The structure of hsa-circ-0006969 was predicted by circPrimer1.2 software. MiRanda v3.3, RNA hybrid 2.1, and Cytoscape 3.6.0 were used for predicting the networks of circRNA-miRNA. T-test, Curve regression, and ROC analysis were applied to… More >

Zinan Zhou, Yirun Chen, Wensheng Dai*

    Energy Engineering, Vol.119, No.6, pp. 2681-2709, 2022, DOI: 10.32604/ee.2022.021410

Abstract The use of different energy carriers together, known as an energy hub, has been a hot topic of research in recent years amongst scientists and researchers. The term energy hub refers to the simultaneous operation of various infrastructures for energy generation and transfer, which has gained momentum in the form of microgrids (MGs). This paper introduces a new strategy for the optimal performance of an MG consisting of different energy carriers for each day. In a smart distribution network (DN), MGs can reduce their own costs in the previous-day market by bidding on sales and purchases. The sales and purchases… More >

    Oncology Research, Vol.27, No.5, pp. 623-628, 2019, DOI:10.3727/096504018X15420734828058

Abstract Circular RNAs (circRNAs) represent a new class of noncoding RNAs that is involved in the development of cancer. However, little is known about their role in chemoresistance. In the present study, we found that hsa_circ_0003998 expression levels in lung adenocarcinoma (LAD) tissues and docetaxel-resistant cell lines (A549/DTX and H1299/DTX) were upregulated. Knockdown of hsa_circ_0003998 decreased chemoresistance, inhibited proliferation, and enhanced apoptosis in docetaxel-resistant LAD cells. Moreover, by using bioinformatics and luciferase reporter assays, we found that miR-326 was a direct target of hsa_circ_0003998. Functional analysis revealed that miR-326 mediated the effect of hsa_circ_0003998 on chemosensitivity. Our findings provide a molecular… More >

Abstract An excessive use of non-linear devices in industry results in current harmonics that degrades the power quality with an unfavorable effect on power system performance. In this research, a novel control technique-based Hybrid-Active Power-Filter (HAPF) is implemented for reactive power compensation and harmonic current component for balanced load by improving the Power-Factor (PF) and Total–Hormonic Distortion (THD) and the performance of a system. This work proposed a soft-computing technique based on Particle Swarm-Optimization (PSO) and Adaptive Fuzzy technique to avoid the phase delays caused by conventional control methods. Moreover, the control algorithms are implemented for an instantaneous reactive and active… More >

    BIOCELL, Vol.46, No.5, pp. 1289-1297, 2022, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2022.016726

Abstract The levels of hsa circular RNA_0002198 (hsa_circ_0002198) have been found to be significantly upregulated in keloid dermal fibroblasts. However, the functional role of hsa_circ_0002198 in keloid fibroblasts and the underlying molecular mechanism for its effects have not been reported. In this study, the levels of hsa_circ_0002198 and nucleotide-binding and oligomerization domain, leucine rich repeat and pyrin domain containing 3 (NLRP3) expression in keloid scar tissues and adjacent normal skin tissues were determined by quantitative real-time PCR and western blotting, respectively. In vitro models of keloid tissue were created by culturing primary keloid fibroblasts obtained from patients. A series of functional… More >

Abstract Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are a novel class of non-coding RNA that have recently shown to have huge capabilities in the regulation of gene expression at the posttranscriptional level. Growing evidence has indicated that circRNAs could serve as competing endogenous RNAs (ceRNAs) to sponge microRNAs (miRNAs) and suppress functions of targeted miRNAs. Osteosarcoma (OS) is the most common malignant primary bone cancer. Hsa_circ_0002137 is upregulated in OS. However, the role of hsa_circ_0002137 in OS remains unclear. Using miRNA pull-down assay, we showed that cir_0002137 sponged hsa-miR-1246, and BCL2 apoptosis regulator (BCL2) mRNA was a potential target of hsa-miR-1246 in human osteosarcoma… More >

    SICONG WANG1, RUIJIN LIU2, QIUYUAN HAN2, KAIJIANG YU3,*

    BIOCELL, Vol.46, No.1, pp. 149-158, 2022, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2021.013027

Abstract Acute kidney injury (AKI), commonly occurring as complications of sepsis, cardiac surgery, and liver or kidney transplantation, is a critical care syndrome. It is well known that lipopolysaccharide (LPS) shock is a common triggering factor for AKI. This study is aimed to examine the effect of flavonoid compound hispidulin on LPS-induced AKI. For this, renal tubular epithelial cell HK-2 was treated with LPS to establish an in vitro model of AKI. The effect of hispidulin on HK-2 cell viability was examined using CCK-8 assay. Cell apoptosis was determined by TUNEL and flow cytometry. Apoptosis marker proteins were determined by using… More >
