Abstract The aims of this study were to determine the meiotic behavior and to estimate pollen grains viability in bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) cultivars. Flower buds were collected during different developmental stages of the Mesoamerican bean cultivars IAPAR 44, Guapo Brilhante, BRS Expedito, BRS Valente, Guateian 6662 and Pérola, and the Andean bean cultivar Iraí, grown in a greenhouse. The meiotic index was determined by anther squashing of material fixed in absolute ethanol-glacial acetic acid (3:1) and stained with acetic orcein. No meiotic abnormalities were observed and the meiotic indices were high for all cultivars, indicating that the mismatch generated during… More >

    Qi Wang1,*, Wei Liu1, Hualong Yu1, Shang Zheng1, Shang Gao1, Fabrizio Granelli2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.121, No.1, pp. 83-103, 2019, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2019.06897

Abstract The wireless sensor network (WSN) is widely employed in the application scenarios of the Internet of Things (IoT) in recent years. Extending the lifetime of the entire system had become a significant challenge due to the energy-constrained fundamental limits of sensor nodes on the perceptual layer of IoT. The clustering routing structures are currently the most popular solution, which can effectively reduce the energy consumption of the entire network and improve its reliability. This paper introduces an enhanced hybrid intelligential algorithm based on particle swarm optimization (PSO) and ant colony optimization (ACO) method. The enhanced PSO is deployed to select… More >

Changes of inducible nitric oxide synthase in aortic cells during the development of hypertension: Effect of angiotensin II

    M. Cruzado, C. Castro, N. Risler, R. Miatello

    BIOCELL, Vol.26, No.1, pp. 61-67, 2002, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2002.26.061

Abstract Nitric oxide (NO) generation by inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) in the vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMC), may play a role in blood vessel tone regulation. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) induced iNOS activity and subsequent nitrite production by cultured aortic VSMC, from SHR with an established chronic blood pressure elevation (adult SHR) or during the period preceding the development of hypertension (young SHR) and from age-matched normotensive Wistar (W) rats were compared. Angiotensin II (Ang II) effect was also evaluated. Both basal LPS-induced iNOS activity and nitrite accumulation were significantly lower in young SHR VSMC compared to young W rat cells. In… More >

Review : Biochemical-molecular markers in unilateral ureteral obstruction

    WALTER MANUCHA

    BIOCELL, Vol.31, No.1, pp. 1-12, 2007, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2007.31.001

Abstract Congenital obstructive nephropathy is the primary cause of end-stage renal disease in children. Rapid diagnosis and initiation of the treatment are vital to preserve function and/or to slow down renal injury. Obstructive uropathy effects -decline in the plasmatic renal flow and glomerular filtration rate, interstitial infiltrate of leukocytes, significant decrease of the urine concentration, loss of the capacity to concentrate urine as well as fibrosis and apoptosis- are a consequence of a variety of factors that work in complex ways and are still not fully understood. Mediators as angiotensin II, transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) and nitric oxide (NO) have been… More >

    Mohammad UBAIDILLAH1,2, Miswar FAPERTA1,2, Kyung-Min KIM1

    BIOCELL, Vol.43, No.3, pp. 215-224, 2019, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2019.07549

Abstract Abiotic stresses, such as drought and salinity, adversely affect plant growth and productivity. Comparison between non transgenic and transgenic rice harboring CaMsrB2 gene, which induces tolerance to abiotic stress, is important to observe response of gene under abiotic stress. Phytohormone showed a tendency to increase under the drought stress or salinity stress in the transgenic plant. RT-PCR analysis showed that gene expression and phytohormone levels under abiotic stress, to be closely related. The CaMsrB2 gene is related to the expression of JA and ABA hormones. Therefore, the level of expression of these genes and hormones was observed. The transcription levels… More >

    Mirza Hasanuzzaman1,*, Aditya Banerjee2, M. H. M. Borhannuddin Bhuyan3,4, Aryadeep Roychoudhury2,*, Jubayer Al Mahmud5 and Masayuki Fujita3

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.88, No.3, pp. 185-221, 2019, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2019.07559

Abstract In the era of climate change, abiotic stresses (e.g., salinity, drought, extreme temperature, flooding, metal/metalloid(s), UV radiation, ozone, etc.) are considered as one of the most complex environmental constraints that restricts crop production worldwide. Introduction of stress-tolerant crop cultivars is the most auspicious way of surviving this constraint, and to produce these types of tolerant crops. Several bioengineering mechanisms involved in stress signaling are being adopted in this regard. One example of this kind of manipulation is the osmotic adjustment. The quarternary ammonium compound glycinebetaine (GB), also originally referred to as betaine is a methylated glycine derivative. Among the betaines,… More >

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.88, No.2, pp. 119-129, 2019, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2019.06570

Abstract Soil salinity affects the growth and yield of crops. The stress of soil salinity on plants can be mitigated by inoculation of plant growth promoting bacteria (PGPR). The influence of PGPR inoculation on wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) crop productivity under salinity stress has not been properly addressed so far. Therefore, the present study was conducted to investigate the effects of various PGPR strains (W14, W10 and 6K; alone and combined) at several growth attributes of wheat plant under different soil salinity gradients (3, 6 and 9 dS m-1). The growth attributes of wheat (height, roots, shoots, spikes, grains quality, biological… More >
