An Alternated Grid Updating Parallel Algorithm for Material Point Method Using OpenMP

    Yantao Zhang1, Xiong Zhang1,2, Yan Liu1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.69, No.2, pp. 143-166, 2010, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2010.069.143

Abstract Material point method(MPM) is a promising method in solving problems involving large deformations, especially explosion and penetration. In MPM, particles can move around the computing domain dynamically, which can result in load imbalance easily. In parallelizing MPM using OpenMP, data races will occur in the stage of grid node updating if we use loop-level parallelism for these loops. Huang et al. proposed a domain decomposition method to overcome data races [Huang, Zhang, Ma and Wang (2008)]. However, significant modifications of the original serial code are required. In this paper, we proposed a new alternated grid updating method to avoid data… More >

Explicit Solutions of Stresses for a Three-Phase Elliptic Inclusion Problem Subject to a Remote Uniform Load

Ching Kong Chao1,2, Chin Kun Chen3, Fu Mo Chen4

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.69, No.2, pp. 119-142, 2010, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2010.069.119

Abstract A general solution to a three-phase elliptic inclusion problem subjected to a remote uniform load is provided in this paper. Analysis of the present elasticity problem is rather tedious due to the presence of material inhomogeneities and complex geometric configurations. Based on the technique of conformal mapping and the method of analytical continuation in conjunction with the alternating technique, the general expressions of the displacement and stresses in each layer medium are derived explicitly in a series form. The effects of the material combinations and geometric configurations on the interfacial stresses are discussed in detail and shown in graphic form. More >

An Alternative Approach to Boundary Element Methods via the Fourier Transform

    Fabian M. E. Duddeck1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.16, No.1, pp. 1-14, 2006, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2006.016.001

Abstract In general, the use of Boundary Element Methods (BEM) is restricted to physical cases for which a fundamental solution can be obtained. For simple differential operators (e.g. isotropic elasticity) these special solutions are known in their explicit form. Hence, the realization of the BEM is straight forward. For more complicated problems (e.g. anisotropic materials), we can only construct the fundamental solution numerically. This is normally done before the actual problem is tackled; the values of the fundamental solutions are stored in a table and all values needed later are interpolated from these entries. The drawbacks of this approach lie in… More >

Mode-III Stress Intensity Factors of a Three-Phase Composite with an Eccentric Circular Inclusion

    C.K. Chao1, A. Wikarta1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.84, No.5, pp. 439-458, 2012, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2012.084.439

Abstract An analytical solution to a three-phase composite with an eccentric circular inclusion under a remote uniform shear load is given in this work. Mode-III stress intensity factors for an arbitrarily oriented crack embedded in an infinite matrix or a core inclusion are provided in this paper. Based on the method of analytical continuation in conjunction with the alternating technique, the solution for a screw dislocation located either in the core inclusion or in the infinite matrix is first derived in a series form. The integral equations with logarithmic singular kernels for a line crack are established by using the screw… More >

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.83, No.3, pp. 221-248, 2012, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2012.083.221

Abstract An adaptive extended Kalman filter is developed and investigated for a transient heat transfer problem in which a high heat flux spot source is applied on one side of a thin plate and ultrasonic pulse time of flight is measured between spatially separated transducers on the opposite side of the plate. The novel approach is based on the uncertainty in the state model covariance and leverages trends in the extended Kalman filter covariance to drive changes to the state model covariance during convergence. This work is an integral part of an effort to develop a system capable of locating the… More >

On the numerical solution of a Cauchy problem in an elastostatic half-plane with a bounded inclusion

    Roman Chapko1, B. Tomas Johansson2, Oleh Sobeyko1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.62, No.1, pp. 57-76, 2010, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2010.062.057

Abstract We propose an iterative procedure for the inverse problem of determining the displacement vector on the boundary of a bounded planar inclusion given the displacement and stress fields on an infinite (planar) line-segment. At each iteration step mixed boundary value problems in an elastostatic half-plane containing the bounded inclusion are solved. For efficient numerical implementation of the procedure these mixed problems are reduced to integral equations over the bounded inclusion. Well-posedness and numerical solution of these boundary integral equations are presented, and a proof of convergence of the procedure for the inverse problem to the original solution is given. Numerical… More >

Abstract Analytical exact solutions of a fundamental heat conduction problem for a three-phase elliptical composite under a remote uniform heat flow are provided in this paper. The steady-state temperature and heat flux fields in each phase of an elliptical composite are analyzed in detail. Investigations on the present heat conduction problem are tedious due to the presence of material inhomogeneities and geometric discontinuities. Based on the technique of conformal mapping and the method of analytical continuation in conjunction with the alternating technique, the general expressions of the temperature and heat flux are derived explicitly in a closed form. Tracking Features in Image Sequences with Kalman Filtering, Global Optimization, Mahalanobis Distance and a Management Model

    Raquel R. Pinho1, João Manuel R. S. Tavares1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.46, No.1, pp. 51-76, 2009, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2009.046.051

Abstract This work addresses the problem of tracking feature points along image sequences. In order to analyze the undergoing movement, an approach based on the Kalman filtering technique has been used, which basically carries out the estimation and correction of the features' movement in every image frame. So as to integrate the measurements obtained from each image into the Kalman filter, a data optimization process has been adopted to achieve the best global correspondence set. The proposed criterion minimizes the cost of global matching, which is based on the Mahalanobis distance. A management model is employed to manage the features being… More >

A Fictitious Time Integration Method for the Numerical Solution of the Fredholm Integral Equation and for Numerical Differentiation of Noisy Data, and Its Relation to the Filter Theory

    Chein-Shan Liu1, Satya N. Atluri2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.41, No.3, pp. 243-262, 2009, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2009.041.243

Abstract The Fictitious Time Integration Method (FTIM) previously developed by Liu and Atluri (2008a) is employed here to solve a system of ill-posed linear algebraic equations, which may result from the discretization of a first-kind linear Fredholm integral equation. We rationalize the mathematical foundation of the FTIM by relating it to the well-known filter theory. For the linear ordinary differential equations which are obtained through the FTIM (and which are equivalently used in FTIM to solve the ill-posed linear algebraic equations), we find that the fictitous time plays the role of a regularization parameter, and its filtering effect is better than… More >

A Hybrid Sensitivity Filtering Method for Topology Optimization

    S.Y. Wang1,2, K.M. Lim2,3, B.C. Khoo2,3, M.Y. Wang4

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.24, No.1, pp. 21-50, 2008, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2008.024.021

Abstract In topology optimization, filtering techniques have become quite popular in practice. In this paper, an accurate and efficient hybrid sensitivity filtering approach based on the traditional and bilateral sensitivity filtering approaches is proposed. In the present hybrid approach, the traditional sensitivity filter is applied to a sub-domain where numerical instabilities are likely to occur to overcome the numerical instabilites robustly. Filtering on mesh-independent holes identified by an image-processing-based technique is prohibited to reduce the computational cost. The bilateral approach is employed for the corresponding nearest neighboring elements of the mesh-independent holes to drive the 0-1 convergence of their boundaries. As… More >
