    Molecular Dynamics Analysis of High-temperature Molten-salt Electrolytes in Thermal Batteries

    Abstract The purpose of this research is to improve the discharge rate and to predict the melting point of high-temperature molten-salt electrolytes in thermal batteries. Using molecular dynamics (MD) simulation techniques, we tried to develop some novel ternary and quaternary molten electrolytes to replace conventional binary LiCl-KCl ones. The simulation results with greater ionic conductivity and lower melting point are consistent with experimental results reported by previous literatures. The MD results have found that the lithium ion mole fraction in the molten-salt electrolytes affects the ionic conductivity significantly.     Failure Analysis of Bolted Joints in Cross-ply Composite Laminates Using Cohesive Zone Elements

    Abstract A strength prediction method is presented for double-lap single fastener bolted joints of cross-ply carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) composite laminates using cohesive zone elements (CZEs). Three-dimensional finite element models were developed and CZEs were inserted into subcritical damage planes identified from X-ray radiographs. The method makes a compromise between the experimental correlation factors (dependant on lay-up, stacking sequence and joint geometry) and three material properties (fracture energy, interlaminar strength and nonlinear shear stress-strain response).     Relaxation of Alternating Iterative Algorithms for the Cauchy Problem Associated with the Modified Helmholtz Equation

    Abstract We propose two algorithms involving the relaxation of either the given Dirichlet data or the prescribed Neumann data on the over-specified boundary, in the case of the alternating iterative algorithm of Kozlov, Maz'ya and Fomin(1991) applied to Cauchy problems for the modified Helmholtz equation. A convergence proof of these relaxation methods is given, along with a stopping criterion. The numerical results obtained using these procedures, in conjunction with the boundary element method (BEM), show the numerical stability, convergence, consistency and computational efficiency of the proposed methods.     An Alternating Iterative MFS Algorithm for the Cauchy Problem in Two-Dimensional Anisotropic Heat Conduction

    Abstract In this paper, the alternating iterative algorithm originally proposed by Kozlov, Maz'ya and Fomin (1991) is numerically implemented for the Cauchy problem in anisotropic heat conduction using a meshless method. Every iteration of the numerical procedure consists of two mixed, well-posed and direct problems which are solved using the method of fundamental solutions (MFS), in conjunction with the Tikhonov regularization method.
