Automatic Optic Disc Detection in Retinal Images Using FKMT‒MOPDF

    Kittipol Wisaeng*

    Computer Systems Science and Engineering, Vol.45, No.3, pp. 2569-2586, 2023, DOI:10.32604/csse.2023.033226

Abstract In recent days, detecting Optic Disc (OD) in retinal images has been challenging and very important to the early diagnosis of eye diseases. The process of detecting the OD is challenging due to the diversity of color, intensity, brightness and shape of the OD. Moreover, the color similarities of the neighboring organs of the OD create difficulties during OD detection. In the proposed Fuzzy K‒Means Threshold (FKMT) and Morphological Operation with Pixel Density Feature (MOPDF), the input retinal images are coarsely segmented by fuzzy K‒means clustering and thresholding, in which the OD is classified from its neighboring organs with intensity… More >

    Muhammad Ghozali1,2, Yenny Meliana2, Widya Fatriasari3, Petar Antov4, Mochamad Chalid1,*

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.11, No.4, pp. 1963-1976, 2023, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2023.026060

Abstract Sugar palm (Arenga pinnata) starch is considered an important renewable, biodegradable, and eco-friendly polymer, which is derived from agricultural by-products and residues, with great potential for the development of biocomposite materials. This research was aimed at investigating the development of TPS biocomposites from A. pinnata palm starch using an extrusion process. Palm starch, glycerol, and stearic acid were extruded in a twin-screw extruder. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis of TPS showed that the starch granules were damaged and gelatinized in the extrusion process. The density of TPS was 1.3695 g/mL, lower than that of palm starch, and the addition of… More > Graphic Abstract

Influence of Thermophoresis and Brownian Motion of Nanoparticles on Radiative Chemically-Reacting MHD Hiemenz Flow over a Nonlinear Stretching Sheet with Heat Generation

    S. Mohammed Ibrahim1, P. Vijaya Kumar2, G. Lorenzini3,*

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.19, No.4, pp. 855-868, 2023, DOI:10.32604/fdmp.2022.019796

Abstract In this study, a radiative MHD stagnation point flow over a nonlinear stretching sheet incorporating thermophoresis and Brownian motion is considered. Using a similarity method to reshape the underlying Partial differential equations into a set of ordinary differential equations (ODEs), the implications of heat generation, and chemical reaction on the flow field are described in detail. Moreover a Homotopy analysis method (HAM) is used to interpret the related mechanisms. It is found that an increase in the magnetic and velocity exponent parameters can damp the fluid velocity, while thermophoresis and Brownian motion promote specific thermal effects. The results also demonstrate… More >

Fully Renewable Thermoplastic Poly(ester urethane urea)s from Bio-based Diisocyanates

    Donglin Tang1,2, Shanmugam Thiyagarajan2,3, Bart A.J. Noordover1,*, Cor E. Koning1, Daan S. van Es3, Jacco van Haveren

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.1, No.3, pp. 222-230, 2013, DOI:10.7569/JRM.2013.634116

Abstract A series of fully renewable poly(ester urethane urea)s (PEUs) were synthesized from bio-based starting materials, e.g., the polyester diol, the diisocyanates including L-lysine diisocyanate (LDI) and isoidide diisocyanate (IIDI), the chain-extenders including 1,4-diaminobutane (bDA), diaminoisoidide (iDA) and di(aminobutyl) urea (b2 DA). It is found that the PEU based on the novel diisocyanate, IIDI, exhibits satisfactory thermal and mechanical properties. The LDI-based PEUs show less favorable thermal and mechanical properties than the IIDI-based counterpart, since the chemical structure of LDI is less regular than that of IIDI. However, by introducing a urea-containing dimeric diamine (b2 DA) instead of the monomeric diamines,… More >

    Fengwei Xie1,*, Paul Luckman1, John Milne1, Lachlan McDonald1, Conor Young1, Chen Yang Tu1, Teo Di Pasquale1, Reinhard Faveere1, Peter J. Halley1,2

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.2, No.2, pp. 95-106, 2014, DOI:10.7569/JRM.2014.634104

Abstract Starch is a biopolymer that is widely available from agriculture/nature and thus is renewable and cheap. In addition, starch-based materials are biodegradable, offering a great advantage over traditional nonbiodegradable synthetic polymers. However, the poor processibility and product performance of starch have greatly impeded the wide application of starch in real applications. This paper reviews the current developments of the production of thermoplastic starch as a commodity renewable material. The biological origins of the feedstock, formulation development, processing requirements, as well as the important aspects that need to be addressed when designing a product from starch are discussed. It is hoped… More >

    Antti Ojala1,*, Lisa Wikström1, Kalle Nättinen2, Jani Lehmonen3, Karita Kinnunen-Raudaskoski4

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.2, No.4, pp. 278-284, 2014, DOI:10.7569/JRM.2014.634126

Abstract This article presents a new method of producing thermomoldable nonwoven materials based on kraft lignin (KL) and softwood kraft pulp (KP). A mixture of starch acetate (SA) and triethyl citrate (TEC) was used as a water insoluble plasticizer for KL. The thermoplastic lignin (TPL) material with the optimized ratio of KL, SA and TEC was prepared in a twin-screw extruder. The TPL compound was ground and mixed with KP fi bers to produce thermoformable sheets using foam-laid technology. The formed webs were compression molded (CM) into plates and mechanically tested. The foam-laid composites had tensile strengths and modulus of 67… More >

Physiological and Biochemical Mechanisms of Exogenous Calcium Chloride on Alleviating Salt Stress in Two Tartary Buckwheat (Fagopyrum tataricum) Varieties Differing in Salinity Tolerance

    Tao Zhang*, Hongbing Yang

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.91, No.8, pp. 1643-1658, 2022, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2022.019572

Abstract Salt stress is one of the most serious abiotic stresses limiting plant growth and development. Calcium as an essential nutrient element and important signaling molecule plays an important role in ameliorating the adverse effect of salinity on plants. This study aimed to investigate the impact of exogenous calcium on improving salt tolerance in Tartary buckwheat cultivars, cv. Xinong9920 (salt-tolerant) and cv. Xinong9909 (salt-sensitive). Four-week-old Tartary buckwheat seedlings under 100 mM NaCl stress were treated with and without exogenous calcium chloride (CaCl2), Ca2+ chelator ethylene glycol tetraacetic acid (EGTA) and Ca2+-channel blocker lanthanum chloride (LaCl3) for 10 days. Then, some important… More >

    Maedeh Mohammadi Azni1, Mohammad Ali Sadrnia1, Shahab S. Band2,*, Zulkefli Bin Mansor3

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.72, No.1, pp. 215-226, 2022, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2022.023030

Abstract Automobile power windows are mechanisms that can be opened and shut with the press of a button. Although these windows can comfort the effort of occupancy to move the window, failure to recognize the person's body part at the right time will result in damage and in some cases, loss of that part. An anti-pinch mechanism is an excellent choice to solve this problem, which detects the obstacle in the glass path immediately and moves it down. In this paper, an optimal solution is presented for fault detection of the anti-pinch window system. The anti-pinch makes it possible to detect… More >

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.130, No.1, pp. 205-220, 2022, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2022.017304

Abstract In this numerical study, the effect of quartic autocatalysis type of chemical reaction, buoyancy force and thermal radiation phenomenon and magnetic effect on tangent hyperbolic nanofluid past an upper horizontal surface of a paraboloid has been studied. By considering the Buongiorno model approach, a diffusion of unequal coefficients in the presence of gyrotactic microorganism is discussed. Implementation of microorganism's idea is used to stabilize the nanoparticles through bioconvection. The modeled PDEs of the problems are converted into nonlinear ODEs with the assistant of the similarity transformations. To tackle nonlinear ODEs, MATLAB package bvp4c is used. In addition, a hallmark of… More >
