Abstract Multiple myeloma (MM) is a hematologic malignancy notorious for its high relapse rate and development of drug resistance, in which cell adhesion-mediated drug resistance plays a critical role. This study integrated four RNA sequencing datasets (CoMMpass, GSE136337, GSE9782, and GSE2658) and focused on analyzing 1706 adhesion-related genes. Rigorous univariate Cox regression analysis identified 18 key prognosis-related genes, including KIF14, TROAP, FLNA, MSN, LGALS1, PECAM1, and ALCAM, which demonstrated the strongest associations with poor overall survival (OS) in MM patients. To comprehensively evaluate the impact of cell adhesion on MM prognosis, an adhesion-related risk score (ARRS) model was constructed using Lasso… More >

CAIJUAN LIU, XINGHAO LI, YUXUAN WU, JINHUI YANG, MENGHAN WANG, YUNQI MA*

    BIOCELL, Vol.48, No.3, pp. 387-401, 2024, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2024.048791

Abstract Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), the most common and aggressive primary brain tumor in adults, is the most malignant and still has no cure. However, the novel role of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) in the pathogenesis of glioblastoma is attracting extensive attention. LncRNAs are transcribed RNA molecules over 200 nucleotides long that do not encode proteins. Unlike small non-coding RNAs, such as microRNAs (miRNAs), lncRNAs have more complex secondary and tertiary structures that enable them to interact with DNA, RNA, and proteins and perform multiple regulatory functions. LncRNAs act as molecular sponges, absorbing and sequestering other biomolecules, particularly miRNAs, thereby preventing these… More > Graphic Abstract

Exploring the molecular mechanisms and potential therapeutic strategies of ferroptosis in ovarian cancer

    LISHA MA1,#, WANQI SHAO1,#, WEILI ZHU2,*

    BIOCELL, Vol.48, No.3, pp. 379-386, 2024, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2024.047812

Abstract The morbidity rate of ovarian cancer, a malignant tumour in gynaecological tumours, is rising, and it is considered to be the most lethal cancer. The majority of patients are typically diagnosed during the advanced stages of the illness due to the elusive characteristics of ovarian cancer and an absence of highly sensitive and specific diagnostic indicators. Surgical excision of the lesions, along with chemotherapy, is the conventional treatment for ovarian cancer; however, resistance to platinum-based chemotherapeutic drugs and molecular targeted therapies frequently arises. Improving the survival rate and prognosis of patients with end-stage or recurring ovarian cancer requires the identification… More >

VAN THI TUONG NGUYEN1,2, KHUONG DUY PHAM1,2,3, HUONG THI QUE CAO1,2, PHUC VAN PHAM1,2,*

    BIOCELL, Vol.48, No.2, pp. 173-189, 2024, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2023.043664

Abstract Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have been proposed in regenerative medicine, especially for angiogenic purposes, due to their potential to self-renew, differentiate, and regulate the microenvironment. Peripheral vascular diseases, which are associated with reduced blood supply, have been treated but not cured. An effective therapy is to recover blood supply via vessel regeneration in the affected area, and MSCs appear to be promising for such conditions. Several studies aimed to explore the role of MSCs in performing angiogenesis and have revealed numerous potential methods to enhance MSC capacity in vessel formation. Efforts have been made to modify standard MSCs to optimize… More > Graphic Abstract

Abstract PDI is a molecular chaperone and plays an important role in Endoplasmic Reticulum quality control (ERQC). PDI participates in the refolding of the misfolded/unfolded proteins to maintain cellular homeostasis under different stresses. However, bioinformatic characteristics and potential functions of PDIs in diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum (Pt) are still unknown so far. Hence, the genome-wide characteristics of PtPDI proteins in P. tricornutum were first studied via bioinformatic and transcriptomic methods. 42 PtPDI genes were identified from the genome of P. tricornutum. The motif, protein structure, classification, number of introns, phylogenetic relationship, and the expression level of 42 PtPDI genes under the tunicamycin… More >
