Mathematical Analysis of a New Design for Cascade Solar Still

    M. Bouzaid1, M. Oubrek, O. Ansari, A. Sabri, M. Taha-Janan

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.12, No.1, pp. 15-32, 2016, DOI:10.3970/fdmp.2016.012.015

Abstract Fresh water available on earth is very scared. Yet the demand of fresh water is incessantly increasing, due to population growth and rapid industrialization. According to the United Nations, in 2025, 63% of the world’s population will be living in scarce water areas. The provision of freshwater is becoming a gradually more important issue in many areas of the world. Oceans are the only available source for large amount of water. Ocean water presents high salinity, so there is a need to desalinate ocean water for everyday consumption. Solar stills are widely used in solar desalination for being very simple… More >

Magnetohydrodynamic Flow and Heat Transfer of an Upper-Convected Maxwell Fluid Due to a Stretching Sheet

    R. C. Bataller1

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.7, No.2, pp. 153-174, 2011, DOI:10.3970/fdmp.2011.007.153

Abstract We present a numerical study of the flow and heat transfer of an incompressible upper-convected Maxwell (UCM) fluid in the presence of an uniform transverse magnetic field over a porous stretching sheet taking into account suction at the surface as well as viscous dissipation and thermal radiation effects. Selected similarity analyses have been carried out by means of a numerical implementation. The effects on the velocity and temperature fields over the sheet of the parameters like elasticity number, suction velocity, magnetic parameter, radiation parameter, Prandtl number and Eckert number are also analyzed. Towards a Numerical Benchmark for MHD Flows of Upper-Convected Maxwell (UCM) Fluids over a Porous Stretching Sheet

    R.C. Bataller1

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.6, No.3, pp. 337-350, 2010, DOI:10.3970/fdmp.2010.006.337

Abstract The present research gathers an accurate numerical study of the laminar flow induced in an incompressible upper-convected Maxwell (UCM) fluid by a linear stretching of a flat, horizontal and porous sheet in the presence of a transverse magnetic field. The governing partial differential equations are converted into an ordinary differential equation by a similarity transformation. The effects on the velocity field over the sheet of the parameters like elasticity number, suction/blowing velocity, and magnetic parameter are also studied. It has also been attempted to show capabilities and wide-range applications of the 4thorder Runge-Kutta method in comparison with the homotopy analysis… More >

A Finite Element Investigation of Elastic Flow Asymmetries in Cross-Slot Geometries Using a Direct Steady Solver

    A. Filali1, L. Khezzar1,2

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.9, No.3, pp. 307-329, 2013, DOI:10.3970/fdmp.2013.009.307

Abstract Numerical investigations of purely-elastic instabilities occurring in creeping flows are reported in planar cross-slot geometries with both sharp and round corners. The fluid is described by the upper-convected Maxwell model, and the governing equations are solved using the finite element technique based on a steady (non-iterative) direct solver implemented in the POLYFLOWcommercial software (version 14.0). Specifically, extensive simulations were carried out on different meshes, with and without the use of flow perturbations, for a wide range of rheological parameters. Such simulations show the onset of flow asymmetries above a critical Deborah number (De). The effect of rounding the corners is… More >

Some Applications of Metamaterial Resonators Based on Symmetry Properties

    J. Naqui1, F. Martín1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.39, No.3, pp. 267-288, 2014, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2014.039.267

Abstract Metamaterial resonators are electrically small resonant particles useful for the implementation of effective media metamaterials. In this paper, some applications of metamaterial resonators (such as the split ring resonator -SRR-, the complementary split ring resonator -CSRR-, the folded stepped impedance resonator -SIR-, and the electric LC resonator), that exploit the symmetry properties of transmission lines loaded with such symmetric particles, are reviewed. This covers differential (balanced) lines with common mode suppression, linear and angular displacement sensors (including alignment sensors), angular velocity sensors, and radiofrequency barcodes. Advantages and drawbacks as compared to existing implementations are also discussed. More >

Molecular Dynamics Simulations of the Nanoindentation for Aluminum and Copper

    Xiaozhi Tang1, Yafang Guo1, Yu Gao1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.23, No.1, pp. 1-8, 2011, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2011.023.001

Abstract Atomistic simulations were performed to study the nanoindentation for two kinds of FCC metals, aluminum and copper. Due to the higher stacking faults in aluminum than in copper, two different deformation mechanisms were observed in our simulation under exactly the same simulation condition. Aluminum and copper also showed different mechanical properties in the unloading stage. The influence of stacking sequence along the loading direction on deformation mechanism was also investigated in this paper. More >

Fire Safety Analysis of Plastic Steel Frames

    Rong-gang Zhang1,2, Hong-tao Zhang3 , Yu-xing Bai3, Jian-ling Gao3, Lai-yong Zhang2 , Bing-ye Xu1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.20, No.3, pp. 243-250, 2010, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2010.020.243

Abstract Based on the upper bound theorem, the fire resistance is studied using the combination of element collapse mechanisms of steel frames, where the element collapse mechanisms are automatically determined from independent mechanisms. The fire limit load is calculated by solving a nonlinear mathematical programming. The computing procedure is programmed by FORTRAN language. Results show that this method is useful to find the collapse mechanism with the lowest fire limit load, which can provide a theoretical and practical way for the fire design of steel frame structure. Experimental and Numerical Study of Micro Deep Drawing of Copper Single Crystal

    XL Geng1, KS Zhang2, YQ Guo1, L Qin1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.13, No.1, pp. 1-16, 2009, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2009.013.001

Abstract One of the problems in a micro-forming process is the grain size effect, which means the formed part consists of a single grain or several grains sometimes, so the material shows anisotropic or heterogeneous. Under these conditions, a conventional method, which based on the isotropic and homogeneous material hypothesis, is not suitable. In this paper, Experimental investigations into micro deep drawing of the copper single crystal were carried out and the pattern of the micro-cup and the drawing force were observed. Using crystal plasticity theory, a user material subroutine (VUMAT) was built and linked to ABAQUS, and the micro deep… More >
