Adan Vega, Alexandra Camaño, Amaly Fong, Sheriff Rashed, Hidekazu Murakawa

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.90, No.2, pp. 147-163, 2013, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2013.090.147

Abstract The inherent deformation produced by two or more overlapped heating lines is not equal to that obtained when individual deformations are simply added. Thus, the effect of overlapping on inherent deformation, need to be clarified in order to achieve full understanding of the phenomenon of plate forming by line heating. In this paper, a 3D thermal-elasto-plastic FEA has been performed to study this problem in details. Using this FEA, the influence of previous heating on the inherent deformation of overlapped heating lines, considering various conditions, is clarified. From the results of this study, a method to determine the overlapping effect… More >

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.89, No.6, pp. 497-512, 2012, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2012.089.497

Abstract The movements of vehicles equipped with various positioning systems such as global and wireless positioning ones have provided beneficial channels to acquire abundant traffic flow information for total road network. However, not all vehicles are mounted with positioning systems and not all equipped positioning facilities are always active. This paper will address how to estimate the number and the states of unequipped vehicles through a series of observations on equipped ones. The proposed estimation process initiates employing the non-analytical microscopic traffic model for particle filter to estimate the number, positions and speeds of unequipped vehicles between an equipped one and… More >

Strength Asymmetry of Twinned Copper Nanowires under Tension and Compression

    Yongfeng Zhang1, Hanchen Huang1,2, Satya N. Atluri3

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.35, No.3, pp. 215-226, 2008, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2008.035.215

Abstract Molecular dynamics simulations reveal the asymmetrical yield strength of twinned copper nanowires under tension and compression. The simulation results show that the strength of nanowires depends on loading conditions, morphologies, and twin spacing. Under tensile loading condition the Schmidt factor of the leading partial is larger than that under compression. Effectively, the yield strength under tension is smaller than that under compression. When the cross-section is circular in morphology, dislocation nucleation requires larger stress, and the asymmetry of yield strength depends on the nucleation stress. When the cross section is square in morphology, dislocation nucleation requires smaller stress, and the… More >

    H.W. Tang1, Y.T. Yang1, C.K. Chen1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.85, No.3, pp. 193-206, 2012, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2012.085.193

Abstract In this article, a new method combining the Mathematical Programming and the Method of Weighted Residual called MP-MWR is presented. Under the validation of maximum principle, and up on the collocation method, the differential equation can be transferred into a bilateral inequality problem. Applying the genetic algorithms helps to find optimal solutions of upper and lower bounds which satisfy the inequalities. Here, the method is verified by analyzing the deflection of superelliptical clamped plate problem. By using this method, the good approximate solution and its error bounds can be obtained effectively and accurately. More >

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.80, No.1, pp. 23-56, 2011, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2011.080.023

Abstract Based on the embedded atom method (EAM) and molecular dynamics (MD) method, in this paper, the tensile deformation properties of Cu nanowires (NWs) with different pre-existing defects, including single surface defects, surface bi-defects and single internal defects, are systematically studied. In-depth deformation mechanisms of NWs with pre-existing defects are also explored. It is found that Young's modulus is insensitive to different pre-existing defects, but yield strength shows an obvious decrease. Defects are observed influencing greatly on NWs' tensile deformation mechanisms, and playing a role of dislocation sources. Besides of the traditional deformation process dominated by the nucleation and propagation of… More >

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.67, No.2, pp. 95-118, 2010, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2010.067.095

Abstract We propose a new semi-automatic segmentation based Active Contour Model and statistic prior knowledge of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Lesions in Regions Of Interest (RIO) within brain Magnetic Resonance Images(MRI). Reliable segmentation of MS lesion is important for at least three types of practical applications: pharmaceutical trails, making decision for drug treatment, patient follow-up. Manual segmentation of the MS lesions in brain MRI by well qualified experts is usually preferred. However, manual segmentation is hard to reproduce and can be highly cost and time consuming in the presence of large volume of MRI data. In other hand, automated segmentation methods are… More >

    Hsiang-Wen Tang, Cha’o-Kung Chen1, Chen-Yu Chiang

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.65, No.1, pp. 95-106, 2010, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2010.065.095

Abstract Up to now, solving some nonlinear differential equations is still a challenge to many scholars, by either numerical or theoretical methods. In this paper, the method of the maximum principle applied on differential equations incorporating the Residual Correction Method is brought up and utilized to obtain the upper and lower approximate solutions of nonlinear heat transfer problem of the non-Fourier fin. Under the fundamental of the maximum principle, the monotonic residual relations of the partial differential governing equation are established first. Then, the finite difference method is applied to discretize the equation, converting the differential equation into the mathematical programming… More >

    Zone-Ching Lin1, Jia-Rong Ye2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.50, No.3, pp. 227-252, 2009, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2009.050.227

Abstract The paper develops a quasi-steady molecular statics model to analyze nanoscale cutting of copper materials by diamond cutters with different shapes. Cutting action, cutting force, equivalent strain and equivalent stress are discussed and compared. The quasi-steady molecular statics nanocutting model first assumes the trajectory of each atom of the copper workpiece being cut whenever the diamond cutter goes forward one step. It then uses the optimization search method to solve the force equilibrium equation of the Morse force in the X and Y directions when each atom moves a small distance, so as to find the new movement position of… More >

Development of a Numerical Toolbox for the Computer Aided Design of Composite Over-Wrapped Pressure Vessels

    Eugenio Brusa1, Matteo Nobile2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.48, No.2, pp. 155-190, 2009, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2009.048.155

Abstract Lightness of high pressure vessels is currently assured by composite materials. Construction of over-wrapped composite pressure vessels with inner metallic liner is for instance compatible with standards requirements of the hydrogen technology of energy storage. Therefore a typical layout manufactured by some industries consists of a cylindrical vessel with covering of carbon-epoxy laminates and metallic impermeable liner. To allow the filament winding of the composite fibres are used hoop and helical layers, respectively. A single nozzle is usually built. It requires that the vessel material is reinforced. This need imposes to have a variable thickness in the composite layer. In… More >

Abstract This paper seeks to utilize the residual correction method in coordination with the evolutionary monotonic iteration technique to obtain upper and lower approximate solutions of non-linear heat transfer problem of the annular hyperbolic profile fins whose thermal conductivity vary with temperature. First, the monotonicity of a non-linear differential equation is reinforced by using the monotone iterative technique. Then, the cubic spline method is applied to discretize and convert the differential equation into the mathematical programming problems. Finally, based on the residual correction concept, the complicated constraint inequality equations can be transferred into the simple iterative equations. As verified by this… More >
