How to make the end of a gene, the simple way

    KAREL H. M. VAN WELY*

    BIOCELL, Vol.46, No.6, pp. 1453-1457, 2022, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2022.018939

Abstract Transcription termination of nearly all protein-coding genes in mammals requires 3’ end processing by a multiprotein complex that will cleave and polyadenylate the messenger RNA precursor. Because a variety of enzyme complexes intervene, 3’ end processing was thought to be fundamentally complex and subject to a multitude of regulatory effects. The possibility to select just one out of several polyadenylation sites, in particular, has caused much questioning and speculation. What appear to be separate mechanisms however can be combined into a defined set of rules, allowing for a relatively simple interpretation of 3’ end processing. Ultimately, readiness of the terminal… More >

    Amira Baumy1, Abeer D. Algarni2,*, Mahmoud Abdalla3, Walid El-Shafai4,5, Fathi E. Abd El-Samie3,4, Naglaa F. Soliman2,3

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.71, No.2, pp. 3257-3276, 2022, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2022.021047

Abstract This paper is concerned with a vital topic in image processing: color image forgery detection. The development of computing capabilities has led to a breakthrough in hacking and forgery attacks on signal, image, and data communicated over networks. Hence, there is an urgent need for developing efficient image forgery detection algorithms. Two main types of forgery are considered in this paper: splicing and copy-move. Splicing is performed by inserting a part of an image into another image. On the other hand, copy-move forgery is performed by copying a part of the image into another position in the same image. The… More >

Targeted editing of intronic-splicing silencer enhancement of SMN2 Exon 7 inclusion by CRISPR/Case 9

    LIUCHENG WU1,3,#, YI WANG2,#, LILI DU1, GUIQING JI1, RUI ZHOU2, ZEYI ZHAO2, JUN CHEN2, SHUNXING ZHU1,*

    BIOCELL, Vol.45, No.6, pp. 1501-1507, 2021, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2021.09528

Abstract Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is an autosomal recessive hereditary neuromuscular disease. Exon 7 and 8 of survival of motor neuron 1 (SMN1) gene or only exon 7 homology deletion leads to the failure to produce a full-length SMN gene. The copy number of SMN2 gene with high homology of SMN1 affects the degree of disease and was the target gene for targeting therapy, in which splicing silencer in intron 7 was the key to suppress the inclusion of exon 7. In this study, we projected to use CRISPR/Case 9 for the targeted editing of intronic-splicing silencer (ISS) sequence to promote… More >

Image Splicing Detection Based on Texture Features with Fractal Entropy

    Razi J. Al-Azawi1, Nadia M. G. Al-Saidi2, Hamid A. Jalab3,*, Rabha W. Ibrahim4, Dumitru Baleanu5,6,7

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.69, No.3, pp. 3903-3915, 2021, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2021.020368

Abstract Over the past years, image manipulation tools have become widely accessible and easier to use, which made the issue of image tampering far more severe. As a direct result to the development of sophisticated image-editing applications, it has become near impossible to recognize tampered images with naked eyes. Thus, to overcome this issue, computer techniques and algorithms have been developed to help with the identification of tampered images. Research on detection of tampered images still carries great challenges. In the present study, we particularly focus on image splicing forgery, a type of manipulation where a region of an image is… More >

DNA methylation and alternative splicing modulate FBXW11 gene expression in Holstein bull testis and are correlated with sperm quality

    YONG LIU1,2,#, ZHIHUA JU1,#, QIANG JIANG1, WENHAO LIU1, CHUNHONG YANG1, YARAN ZHANG1, XIUGE WANG1, YAPING GAO1, XIAOCHAO WEI1, YAN SUN1, JINPENG WANG1, MINGHAI HOU1, LING YANG2, JINMING HUANG1,*

    BIOCELL, Vol.45, No.1, pp. 79-87, 2021, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2021.013583

Abstract F-box and WD-40 domain protein 11 (FBXW11) is an important component of the E3 ubiquitin-ligase enzyme that plays a key role in the ubiquitin-dependent regulation of spermatogenesis. In our previous research, the mRNA expression of FBXW11 in bull sperm with high motility is significantly higher than that with low motility. In the present study, the protein expression levels of FBXW11 in bull testicular tissues with low-performance sperm quality groups were significantly higher than those in normal performance groups. The immunohistochemistry result demonstrated that FBXW11 protein was located in the periphery of Leydig cells and seminiferous tubules. Three splice variants of… More >

Characterization of full-length transcriptome and mechanisms of sugar accumulation in Annona squamosa fruit

REN FANG#, WEIXIONG HUANG#, JINYAN YAO, XING LONG, JI ZHANG, SHUANGYUN ZHOU, BIAO DENG, WENZHONG TANG, ZHENYU AN*

    BIOCELL, Vol.44, No.4, pp. 737-750, 2020, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2020.012933

Abstract Annona squamosa is a multipurpose fruit tree employed in nutritional, medicinal, and industrial fields. Its fruit is significantly enriched in sugars, making it an excellent species to study sugar accumulation in fruit. However, the scarcity of genomic resources hinders genetic studies in this species. This study aimed at generating large-scale genomic resources in A. squamosa and deciphering the molecular basis of its high sugar content. Herein, we sequenced and characterized the full-length transcriptome of A. squamosa fruit using PacBio Iso-seq. In addition, we analyzed the changes in sugar content over five fruit growth and ripening stages, and we applied RNA-sequencing… More >

Splicing Image and Its Localization: A Survey

    Jinwei Wang1,*, Yangyang Li2

Journal of Information Hiding and Privacy Protection, Vol.1, No.2, pp. 77-86, 2019, DOI:10.32604/jihpp.2019.07186

Abstract With the rapid development of information technology, digital images have become an important medium for information transmission. However, manipulating images is becoming a common task with the powerful image editing tools and software, and people can tamper the images content without leaving any visible traces of splicing in order to gain personal goal. Images are easily spliced and distributed, and the situation will be a great threat to social security. The survey covers splicing image and its localization. The present status of splicing image localization approaches is discussed along with a recommendation for future research. More >

Improved Fully Convolutional Network for Digital Image Region Forgery Detection

    Jiwei Zhang1, Yueying Li2, Shaozhang Niu1,*, Zhiyi Cao1, Xinyi Wang1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.60, No.1, pp. 287-303, 2019, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2019.05353

Abstract With the rapid development of image editing techniques, the image splicing behavior, typically for those that involve copying a portion from one original image into another targeted image, has become one of the most prevalent challenges in our society. The existing algorithms relying on hand-crafted features can be used to detect image splicing but unfortunately lack precise location information of the tampered region. On the basis of changing the classifications of fully convolutional network (FCN), here we proposed an improved FCN that enables locating the spliced region. Specifically, we first insert the original images into the training dataset that contains… More >
