Vibration and Buckling of Truss Core Sandwich Plates on An Elastic Foundation Subjected to Biaxial In-plane Loads

    J.W. Chen1, W. Liu1, X.Y. Su1,2

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.24, No.2, pp. 163-182, 2011, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2011.024.163

Abstract Truss-core sandwich plates are thin-walled structures comprising a truss core and two thin flat sheets. Since no direct analytical solution for the dynamic response of such structures exists, the complex three dimensional (3D) systems are idealized as equivalent 2D homogeneous continuous plates. The macroscopic effective bending and transverse shear stiffness are derived. Two representative core topologies are considered: pyramidal truss core and tetrahedral truss core. The first order shear deformation theory is used to study the flexural vibration of a simply supported sandwich plate. The buckling of the truss core plate on an elastic foundation subjected to biaxial in-plane compressive… More >

    Kotaro Mori1, Fumio Narita1, Yasuhide Shindo1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.23, No.3, pp. 187-200, 2011, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2011.023.187

Abstract This work deals with the response of clamped-free magnetostrictive/piezoelectric/magnetostrictive laminates under electric field both numerically and experimentally. The laminate is fabricated using two magnetostrictive Terfenol-D layers and a soft piezoelectric PZT layer. Easy axis of Terfenol-D layers is length direction, while the polarization of PZT layer is the thickness direction. The magnetostriction of the Terfenol-D layers bonded to the upper and lower surfaces of the PZT layer is first measured. Next, a nonlinear finite element analysis is employed to evaluate the second-order magnetoelastic constants in the Terfenol-D layers bonded to the PZT layer using measured data. The induced magnetic field… More >

    Hong-Hua Dai1,2, Jeom Kee Paik3, Satya N. Atluri2

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.23, No.1, pp. 69-100, 2011, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2011.023.069

Abstract In this paper, the global nonlinear Galerkin method is used to perform an accurate and efficient analysis of the large deflection behavior of a simply-supported rectangular plate under combined loads. Through applying the Galerkin method to the governing nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs) of the plate, we derive a system of coupled third order nonlinear algebraic equations (NAEs). However, the resultant system of NAEs is thought to be hard to tackle because one has to find the one physical solution from among the possible multiple solutions. Therefore, a suitable initial guess is required to lead to the real solution for… More >

    J. Sladek1, V. Sladek1, P. Stanak1, Ch. Zhang2, M. Wünsche2

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.23, No.1, pp. 35-68, 2011, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2011.023.035

Abstract A contour integral method is developed for the computation of stress intensity, electric and magnetic intensity factors for cracks in continuously nonhomogeneous magnetoelectroelastic solids under a transient dynamic load. It is shown that the asymptotic fields in the crack-tip vicinity in a continuously nonhomogeneos medium are the same as in a homogeneous one. A meshless method based on the local Petrov-Galerkin approach is applied for the computation of the physical fields occurring in the contour integral expressions of intensity factors. A unit step function is used as the test functions in the local weak-form. This leads to local integral equations… More >

A Meshless Numerical Method for Kirchhoff Plates under Arbitrary Loadings

    Chia-Cheng Tsai 1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.22, No.3, pp. 197-218, 2011, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2011.022.197

Abstract This paper describes the combination of the method of fundamental solutions (MFS) and the dual reciprocity method (DRM) as a meshless numerical method to solve problems of Kirchhoff plates under arbitrary loadings. In the solution procedure, a arbitrary distributed loading is first approximated by either the multiquadrics (MQ) or the augmented polyharmonic splines (APS), which are constructed by splines and monomials. The particular solutions of multiquadrics, splines and monomials are all derived analytically and explicitly. Then, the complementary solutions are solved formally by the MFS. Furthermore, the boundary conditions of lateral displacement, slope, normal moment, and effective shear force are… More >

Orthogonal Tapered Beam Functions in the Study of Free Vibrations for Non-uniform Isotropic Rectangular Plates

    M.F. Liu1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.22, No.2, pp. 97-128, 2011, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2011.022.097

Abstract A new invented Orthogonal Tapered Beam Functions (OTBFs) have been introduced in this paper and used in accordance with the Rayleigh-Ritz method to determine the natural frequencies and mode shapes of the non-uniform rectangular isotropic plates with varying thickness in one or two directions. The generation of the OTBFs is based on the static solution of a one-dimensional beam problem subjected to constant applied load, and then extends to an orthogonal or orthonomal infinite set of admissible functions by performing the three-term recurrence scheme. A wide range of non-uniform rectangular plate whose domain is referenced by a so-called truncation factor… More >

    Le-Le Zhang1, Xue-Qian Fang1, Jin-Xi Liu1, Ji-Hong Ma1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.21, No.3, pp. 171-186, 2011, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2011.021.171

Abstract On the basis of continuum surface elasticity, two interacting cylindrical nano-inhomogeneities with surface/interface effect in a small-sized solid under anti-plane shear waves are investigated, and the dynamic stress around the nano-inhomogeneities is analyzed. The wave function expansion method is used to expressed the wave field around the two nano-inhomogeneities. The total wave field is obtained by the addition theorem for cylindrical wave function. Through analysis, it is found that the distance between the two nano-inhomogeneities shows great effect on the dynamic stress in nano composites. The effect of the distance is also related to the properties of the nano-inhomogeneities and… More >

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.21, No.2, pp. 107-118, 2011, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2011.021.107

Abstract In this paper, digital image correlation method (DICM) is employed to measure the shear behavior of the spot welding specimens and the ones using adhesive under quasi-static lap shear testing. The images of the specimens' surfaces are captured in real-time by CCD and corresponding computer system. DICM is subsequently used to obtained strain by correlating the images captured before and after deformation. Then, both force-displacement curves and stress-strain curves of the specimens including the cracking load are obtained. The results and analysis show that the mechanical properties of specimens using adhesive compared with the spot welding specimens have an obvious… More >

    Alamusi1, Y.L. Liu1, N. Hu1,2

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.20, No.2, pp. 101-118, 2010, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2010.020.101

Abstract In this work, we propose a 3 dimensional (3D) numerical model to predict the piezoresistivity behaviors of a nanocomposite material made from an insulating polymer filled by carbon nanotubes (CNTs). This material is very hopeful for its application in highly sensitive strain sensor by measuring its piezoresistivity, i.e., the ratio of resistance change versus applied strain. In this numerical approach, a 3D resistor network model is firstly proposed to predict the electrical conductivity of the nanocomposite with a large amount of randomly dispersed CNTs under the zero strain state. By focusing on the fact that the piezoresistivity of the nanocomposite… More >

    Adel A. Abdel-Wahab1, Angelo Maligno1, Vadim V. Silberschmidt1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.19, No.3, pp. 217-238, 2010, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2010.019.217

Abstract Bone is the principal structural component of a skeleton: it assists the load-bearing framework of a living body. Structural integrity of this component is important; understanding of its mechanical behaviour up to failure is necessary for prevention and diagnostic of trauma. In dynamic events such as traumatic falls, involvement in car crash and sports injuries, bone can be exposed to loads exceeding its structural strength and/or fracture toughness. By developing adequate numerical models to predict and describe its deformation and fracture behaviour up to fracture, a detailed study of reasons for, and ways to prevent or treatment methods of, bone… More >
