Abstract In recent times, wind energy receives maximum attention and has become a significant green energy source globally. The wind turbine (WT) entered into several domains such as power electronics that are employed to assist the connection process of a wind energy system and grid. The turbulent characteristics of wind profile along with uncertainty in the design of WT make it highly challenging for prolific power extraction. The pitch control angle is employed to effectively operate the WT at the above nominal wind speed. Besides, the pitch controller needs to be intelligent for the extraction of… More >

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.130, No.1, pp. 543-558, 2022, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2022.018123

Abstract In a wind turbine, the rolling bearing is the critical component. However, it has a high failure rate. Therefore, the failure analysis and fault diagnosis of wind power rolling bearings are very important to ensure the high reliability and safety of wind power equipment. In this study, the failure form and the corresponding reason for the failure are discussed firstly. Then, the natural frequency and the characteristic frequency are analyzed. The Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) algorithm is used to extract the characteristics of the vibration signal of the rolling bearing. Moreover, the eigenmode function is More >

    Jinghua Wang1, Leian Zhang1, Xuemei Huang1,*, Jinfeng Zhang2, Chengwei Yuan1

    Energy Engineering, Vol.119, No.1, pp. 407-418, 2022, DOI:10.32604/EE.2022.016439

Abstract Transverse crack often occurs in the trailing edge region of the blade when subjected to the excessive edgewise fatigue load. In this paper a refined model was established through local mesh refinement methods in order to investigate the initiation mechanism of crack and its extension in blade trailing edge. The material stress around the crack in trailing edge region under different thicknesses is calculated based on the fracture mechanics theory. The factors affecting the fatigue robustness of blade trailing edge are concluded by investigating the results of finite element analysis and coupons test. Compared with More >

Investigation of Inverter Temperature Prediction Model in Wind Farm Based on SCADA Data

    Qihui Ling1,2,*, Wei Zhang2, Qiancheng Zhao1,2, Juchuan Dai1,2

    Energy Engineering, Vol.119, No.1, pp. 287-300, 2022, DOI:10.32604/EE.2022.014718

Abstract The inverter is one of the key components of wind turbine, and it is a complex circuit composed of a series of components such as a variety of electronic components and power devices. Therefore, it is difficult to accurately identify the operation states of inverter and some problems regarding its own circuit, especially in the early stages of failure. However, if the inverter temperature prediction model can be established, the early states can be identified through the judgment of the output temperature. Accordingly, considering whether the inverter heats up normally from the perspective of heat… More >

Performance of Gradient-Based Optimizer for Optimum Wind Cube Design

    Alaa A. K. Ismaeel1,2, Essam H. Houssein3, Amir Y. Hassan4, Mokhtar Said5,*

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.71, No.1, pp. 339-353, 2022, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2022.021517

Abstract Renewable energy is a safe and limitless energy source that can be utilized for heating, cooling, and other purposes. Wind energy is one of the most important renewable energy sources. Power fluctuation of wind turbines occurs due to variation of wind velocity. A wind cube is used to decrease power fluctuation and increase the wind turbine’s power. The optimum design for a wind cube is the main contribution of this work. The decisive design parameters used to optimize the wind cube are its inner and outer radius, the roughness factor, and the height of the… More >

Analysis of Near-Wake Deflection Characteristics of Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine Tower under Yaw State

    Zhen Liu1,3, Jianwen Wang1,2,*, Fuzhong Bai3, Caifeng Wen1,2, Yunchao Du1

    Energy Engineering, Vol.118, No.6, pp. 1627-1640, 2021, DOI:10.32604/EE.2021.016357

Abstract The yaw of the horizontal axis wind turbine results in the deflection of the wake flow field of the tower. The reasonable layout of wind farm can reduce the power loss of the downstream wind turbine generators due to the blocking effect of the upstream wake flow and increase the output power of the whole wind farm. However, there is still much space for further research. In this paper, experimental research is conducted on the near-wake deflection characteristics of wind turbine tower under yaw state, expecting the effect of throwing away a brick in order… More >

    Energy Engineering, Vol.118, No.6, pp. 1869-1886, 2021, DOI:10.32604/EE.2021.015542

Abstract With the continuous increase in the proportional use of wind energy across the globe, the reduction of power generation efficiency and safety hazards caused by the icing on wind turbine blades have attracted more consideration for research. Therefore, it is crucial to accurately analyze the thickness of icing on wind turbine blades, which can serve as a basis for formulating corresponding control measures and ensure a safe and stable operation of wind turbines in winter times and/or in high altitude areas. This paper fully utilized the advantages of the support vector machine (SVM) and back-propagation More >

    Energy Engineering, Vol.118, No.5, pp. 1439-1452, 2021, DOI:10.32604/EE.2021.015011

Abstract The axial flux permanent magnet (AFPM) generator with double-sided internal stator structure is highly suitable for vertical axis wind turbines due to its high power density. The performance of the AFPM generator with double-sided internal stator structure can be improved by the reasonable design of electromagnetic parameters. To further improve the overall performance of the AFPM generator with double-sided internal stator structure, multivariable (coil width ωc, permanent magnet thickness h, pole arc coefficient αp and working air gap lg) and multi-objective (generator efficiency η, total harmonic distortion of the voltage THD and induced electromotive force amplitude EMF) functional More >

    Wei Zhang1,2, Qihui Ling1,2,*, Qiancheng Zhao1,2, Hushu Wu3

    Energy Engineering, Vol.118, No.5, pp. 1515-1535, 2021, DOI:10.32604/EE.2021.014162

Abstract The condition monitoring and fault diagnosis have been identified as the key to achieving higher availabilities of wind turbines. Numerous studies show that the open-circuit fault is a significant contributor to the failures of wind turbine converter. However, the multiple faults combinations and the influence of wind speed changes abruptly, grid voltage sags and noise interference have brought great challenges to fault diagnosis. Accordingly, concerning the open-circuit fault of converters in direct-driven PMSG wind turbine, a diagnostic method for multiple open-circuit faults is proposed in this paper, which is divided into two tasks: The first… More >
