    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.93, No.11, pp. 3091-3107, 2024, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2024.058422 - 30 November 2024

Abstract Postharvest losses remain a significant challenge, particularly in developing countries that have inadequate infrastructure. Medicinal plants offer an eco-friendly and sustainable solution for managing diseases and pests in agricultural systems. These plants are rich in bioactive compounds, such as alkaloids, flavonoids, terpenoids, phenolics, and essential oils, many of which have proven antimicrobial, antifungal, insecticidal, and antioxidant properties. These characteristics make medicinal plants viable candidates for postharvest disease and pest control. Among these, Larrea tridentata (creosote bush) is particularly notable for its bioactive compounds with strong antifungal properties. Their potential applications include agriculture, food preservation, and medicine.… More > Graphic Abstract

Abstract The metabolic activity of the fruits continues even after harvest, which results in the loss of bioactive compounds, a decrease in the quality of the fruits, softening and browning, among other negative effects. The use of certain elements such as silicon can improve postharvest quality, since it is involved in the metabolic, physiological and structural activity of plants, moreover can increase the quality of the fruits. In addition, nanotechnology has had a positive impact on crop yield, nutritional value, fruit quality and can improve antioxidant activity. For these reasons, the use of beneficial elements such… More >

    Heba I. Mohamed1,*, Eman M. Fawzi1, Abdul Basit2, Kaleemullah3, Rafiq Lone4, Mahmoud R. Sofy5

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.91, No.7, pp. 1303-1325, 2022, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2022.020642 - 14 March 2022

Abstract After wheat, rice, maize, and barley, sorghum is the fifth most widely grown cereal on the planet. Due to its high production, drought resistance, and heat tolerance, this crop is replacing maize in some areas. Sorghum is available in a variety of colors, including cream, lemon-yellow, red, and even black. The principal grain anatomical components are pericarp, germ or embryo and endosperm. This review provides an overview of key sorghum grain components, including starches, fiber, proteins, lipids, and vitamins. Also, we summarized phenolic compounds, flavonoids, tannins, carotenoids, vitamin E, amines, Policosanols and Phytosterols in sorghum… More >

Impact of chitosan-based nanocarriers on cytoskeleton dynamics: Current status and challenges

    M. CAROLINA DI SANTO1,2,#, AGUSTINA ALAIMO1,2,#, ANA PAULA DOMÍNGUEZ RUBIO1,2, OSCAR E. PÉREZ1,2,*

    BIOCELL, Vol.46, No.4, pp. 885-891, 2022, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2022.018391 - 15 December 2021

Abstract Chitosan-based nanocarriers (CS-NCs) show a promising role in improving drugs and bioactive compounds delivery for therapy. However, the effects exerted by CS-NCs at the cellular level, including their recognition and uptake, have not been fully investigated yet. Many factors, including size, shape, concentration, and surface chemistry of CS-NCs, play an important role in determining the types of intracellular signals triggered. The mechanism of uptake and the involvement of the cytoskeleton during the CS-NCs endocytosis variates among the different cell types as well as further effects observed inside cells. In the present work, we discuss the… More >

Recent advances in metabolomics have paved the way to understand and evaluate the presence of diverse sets of metabolites in different plant parts. This study aimed at exploring the diversity of primary and secondary metabolites in the banana pseudo-stem. Hereby, we identified and quantified 373 metabolites from a diverse range of classes including, alkaloids, flavonoids, lipids, phenolic acids,… More >

Synthesis of Photoactive Compounds from Tall Oil Fatty Acids

    Beatrise Sture1,*, Mikelis Kirpluks1, Sergejs Gaidukovs2, Edgars Vanags1

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.8, No.9, pp. 1077-1089, 2020, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2020.09294 - 03 August 2020

Abstract Photocurable systems are more effective, faster and require less energy than conventional thermal curing methods. To facilitate the ongoing transition toward a biobased economy, photoactive compounds were synthesized from tall oil fatty acids (TOFA) which is a by-product from wood pulping. In this study, photoactive monomers were synthesized by two different chemical pathways using oleic acid and TOFA as raw materials. Firstly, double bonds present in TOFA were epoxidized, followed by epoxy ring-opening with acrylic acid which introduced photoactive functional groups into the fatty acid backbone. Intermediates and final products were analysed using titration methods More >
