Seaweed Fiber Fabricated with Agar Alkali-Free Extracted from Gracilaria lemaneiformis

    Yuzhi Wu1, Cunzhen Geng1,*, Chaochao Cui2, Zhefeng Xin2, Yanzhi Xia1, Zhixin Xue1,*

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.11, No.3, pp. 1199-1208, 2023, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2022.022976

Abstract The sulfate groups in agar structure played a good role in the formation of fiber. However, commercially available agar is usually extracted from red algae by alkali treatment to decrease the content of sulfate group for the purpose of high gel strength. In this paper, an alkali-free method of agar extraction from Gracilaria lemaneiformis was proposed for the wet-spinning purpose. This method is environmentally friendly, reduces the extraction steps, saves energy, and reduces the production cost of agar fiber. The improved agar preparation process not only has higher agar yield, but also has higher molecular weight and sulfate group content,… More > Graphic Abstract

Genome-wide identification and expression analysis of Aux/IAA gene family in strawberry (Fragaria vesca)

    LIYAN SU1,2,#, HONG YU3,#, JIUDONG ZHANG1, XIAOHONG ZHAO1, XUAN LIU1, QIANG LI1,4,*

    BIOCELL, Vol.45, No.4, pp. 1153-1166, 2021, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2021.014499

Abstract Auxin signaling and its components (Auxin/Indole-3-Acetic Acid (Aux/IAA)) are critical for plant growth and development. Here, we performed a genome-wide annotation and identified twenty-one Aux/IAA genes in strawberry (Fragaria vesca). Most FveIAAs were located on chromosomes 1, 2, 4, 5, and 6, while no FveIAAs were found in chromosomes 3 and 7. Phylogenetic analysis divided these genes into nine subfamilies. Most FveIAAs contained the DNA-binding and Aux/IAA domains, as well as motifs I–IV. There were 2–6 exons in the FveIAA genes based on the gene structure analysis. Also, we found that four pairs of FveIAA genes underwent segment duplications. Moreover,… More >

Two Routes to Produce Chitosan from Agaricus bisporus

    Abdelghani Hassainia1, Hamid Satha1,*, Boufi Sami2

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.8, No.1, pp. 101-111, 2020, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2020.07725

Abstract Two methods were used to produce chitosan by deacetylation of chitin which was extracted from Agaricus bisporus stipes. The first one gives chitosan 1 with low yield of 2.5%, degree of acetylation (DA) of 4%, molecular weight (MW) of 2.973 × 105 (g/mol). The second route produces chitosan 2 with higher yield of 41%, degree of acetylation (DA) of 17.23%, molecular weight (MW) of 2.939 × 105 (g/mol). Both chitosans were characterized by XRD, FTIR, 1 H-NMR spectroscopy nuclear magnetic resonance of proton. The molecular weight (MW) was determined by size exclusion chromatography (SEC). Thermal analysis shows that both chitosans… More >

Edible Coatings Based on Apple Pectin, Cellulose Nanocrystals, and Essential Oil of Lemongrass: Improving the Quality and Shelf Life of Strawberries (Fragaria Ananassa)

Ingrid Souza Vieira da Silva1, Natália Soares Prado1, Patrícia Gontijo de Melo2, Danilo Campion Arantes3, Mara Zeni Andrade4, Harumi Otaguro1, Daniel Pasquini1,*

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.7, No.1, pp. 73-87, 2019, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2019.00042

Abstract In this work, nine different types of edible coating based on pectin, cellulose nanocrystals, glycerol, and essential oil of lemongrass were prepared and used to coat strawberries with a film formed directly on the surface of the coated fruit. The effects of the different edible coatings on refrigerated fruits in terms of weight loss, titratable acidity, total soluble solids, pH, and anthocyanin content was evaluated after 2 days, 4 days, 6 days, and 8 days of storage. Application of the edible coatings reduced the weight loss of the coated strawberries and the anthocyanin content. The total soluble solids content of… More >

Devanagari Handwriting Grading System Based on Curvature Features

    Munish Kumar1, Simpel Rani Jindal2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.113, No.2, pp. 195-202, 2017, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2017.113.201

Abstract Grading of writers in perspective of their handwriting is a challenging task owing to various writing styles of different individuals. This paper presents a framework for grading of Devanagari writers in perspective of their handwriting. This framework of grading can be useful in conducting the handwriting competitions and then deciding the winners on the basis of an automated process. Selecting the set of features is a challenging task for implementing a handwriting grading system of particular language. In this paper, curvature features, namely, parabola curve fitting and power curve fitting have been considered for extracting the vital information of writers,… More >
