Abstract Centaurium erythraea Rafn (“Gosset El Haya”) has long been prized in North African folk medicine, yet Moroccan chemobiological data remain scarce. Ethanol extracts of northern Moroccan aerial parts were profiled by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and found rich in phenolics, dominated by 4-hydroxybenzoic acid (57.8%) and naringin (10.3%). The extract exhibited strong antioxidant power in the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical-scavenging assay, with a half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) of ≈74 µg mL−1, and a total antioxidant capacity (TAC) of ≈201 µg mL−1 and selective antimicrobial activity, sharply inhibiting Aspergillus niger, Penicillium digitatum, and Rhodotorula glutinis while sparing Staphylococcus aureus. Abstract Pimenta dioica is a tropical Caribbean tree belonging to the family Myrtaceae, widely used in various human activities, including perfume production, food flavoring, natural pesticides, and medicine. This study aimed to explore the chemical composition of Pimenta dioica flower essential oil obtained via hydrodistillation using GC-MS analysis. Additionally, the oil’s tyrosinase inhibitory activity was investigated. The effectiveness of the oil’s major constituents in binding to tyrosinase was also evaluated through molecular docking simulations. GC-MS analysis identified fifteen compounds, with eugenol (70.59%) as the major component, followed by β-myrcene (10.54%), limonene (8.55%), β-ocimene (4.92%), α-phellandrene (1.39%), and linalool… More >

Mengting Huang, Meiting Lu, Li Yang, Jiwen Long, Li Zhou*

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.13, No.10, pp. 2077-2090, 2025, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2025.02025-0122 - 22 October 2025

Abstract Peach gum polysaccharide (PGP), a readily available natural polysaccharide, boasts substantial potential across diverse applications, yet its practical utility is severely limited by its vulnerability to bacterial growth and limited antioxidant activity. Herein, we introduced a simple and effective method to enhance the antibacterial and antioxidant properties of PGP by conjugating it with salicylic acid (SA). Cytotoxicity evaluation results confirmed that the resulting PGP-SA retains the excellent biocompatibility of PGP. Notably, PGP-SA demonstrates outstanding antibacterial activity against both Gram-positive (S. aureus) and Gram-negative (E. coli) bacteria, outperforming non-modified PGP. Its antibacterial mechanism is hypothesized to stem from… More > Graphic Abstract

Abstract Fructus Ligustri Lucidi (FLL) refers to the dried mature fruit of Ligustrum lucidum Ait., a species from the Oleaceae family, widely distributed across East Asia and India. This study aimed to optimize the extraction process for Fructus Ligustri Lucidi essential oil (FLLO) to develop an efficient and practical extraction method. Additionally, the chemical composition of FLLO was analyzed, and its antioxidant, antimicrobial, and cytotoxic activities were evaluated. FLLO was extracted using supercritical CO2 extraction, and response surface methodology was applied to optimize the extraction parameters: pressure of 16 MPa, temperature of 40°C, and extraction time of 40… More > Graphic Abstract

Abstract Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) exhibits a greater capacity for cadmium (Cd) absorption compared to other cereal crops, leading to elevated daily Cd intake, and posing a significant threat to public health. For the mitigation of Cd stress in sustainable and environmentally friendly way, a pot study was designed by using exogenous application of various biostimulants, i.e., Nigella sativa and Ocimum sanctum extracts: 0%, 10%, and 20% in combination with the chelating agent ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) using 0 and 5 mg kg under various levels of Cd stress (i.e., 0, 5, 10, and 15 mg kg soil). Results revealed… More > Graphic Abstract

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.12, No.4, pp. 827-842, 2024, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2024.046950 - 12 June 2024

Abstract This study is the first to evaluate the phytochemical content and biological properties of Tunisian T. platyphyllos Scop. A total of 23 compounds of essential oils were identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis of bracts and fruit extracts. The results show that oxygenated monoterpenes were the dominant class of essential oils. The phenolic composition was investigated by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time of flight (MALDI-TOF). The analysis showed that the chemical profiles of the ethanolic extracts of bracts and fruits are substantially similar. The highest polyphenol content was found in the ethanolic extracts of the fruits (7.65… More > Graphic Abstract

Abstract This study aimed to examine the effects of inoculating Fritillaria taipaiensis P.Y.Li leaves with different strains of potassium-solubilizing bacteria (KSB), or combinations thereof, focusing on aspects of photosynthesis and physiological and biochemical characteristics. At present, some studies have only studied the rhizosphere microbial community characteristics of F. taipaiensis and have not discussed the effects of different microbial species on the growth promotion of F. taipaiensis. This paper will start from the perspective of potassium-solubilizing bacteria to conduct an in-depth study. Seed cultivation commenced at the base with three different KSBs in early October 2022. Abstract The fruits of the Sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides L.) are a popular plant food and a valuable health product. Cultivating plants produces a lot of leaves with fine branches as an unnecessary residue, which needs valorization. The aim of the study was to estimate (by HPLC-MS/MS) the qualitative and quantitative content of polyphenolic compounds in different parts of H. rhamnoides (HR), and to determine the level of antioxidant activity of leaves and fruits (by DPPH, ABTS methods and ferrozine test). Up to 19 compounds were identified in different parts of HR. The fruits are rich in flavonoids, including… More >

Abstract Cadmium (Cd) and Mercury (Hg) is among the heavy metals most hazardous for plant and human health. Known to induce oxidative stress in plants and disbalance equilibrium in the antioxidant defence system, these metals alter plant growth and cause damage at the cellular and molecular levels. Soybean is an important oilseed crop that is raised in soils often contaminated by Cd and Hg. The comparative studies on the deleterious effect of Cd and Hg and the defence system of antioxidants were not studied earlier in soybean plant. In this study, soybean plants were exposed to… More >

Extraction, Antioxidant Activity and Identification of Flavonoids from Root Tubers of Kosteletzkya virginica

    Yu Zai*, Shaohua Liu

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.92, No.1, pp. 225-236, 2023, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2022.022576 - 06 September 2022

Abstract Kosteletzkya virginica (K. virginica) is used for revegetation of salt-affected coastal tidal flats and as a raw material of biodiesel. K. virginica root tuber, a biowaste with low economic value, is rich in bioactive compounds. This study aimed to extract and identify flavonoids from K. virginica root tubers. The optimal extraction conditions were 1/25 (w/v) solid/liquid ratio, 40% ethanol concentration at 40°C for 60 min. Under these conditions, 65.2 ± 3.7 mg/g total flavonoid content was extracted from the roots, which were collected from salinized soil in late autumn of the third year. Antioxidant activity was evaluated through 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl, More >
