Efficiency of a Modular Cleanroom for Space Applications

    Matthew R. Coburn1, Charlie Young2, Chris Smith2, Graham Schultz2, Miguel Robayo3, Zheng-Tong Xie1,*

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.20, No.3, pp. 547-562, 2024, DOI:10.32604/fdmp.2023.028601

Abstract A prototype cleanroom for hazardous testing and handling of satellites prior to launcher encapsulation, satisfying the ISO8 standard has been designed and analyzed in terms of performances. Unsteady Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) models have been used to study the related flow field and particulate matter (PM) dispersion. The outcomes of the URANS models have been validated through comparison with equivalent large-eddy simulations. Special attention has been paid to the location and shape of the air intakes and their orientation in space, in order to balance the PM convection and diffusion inside the cleanroom. Forming a cyclone-type flow pattern inside the… More >

High-Precision Isoparametric Hole, Ring, Tube, Disk, Sphere Boundary Element and Their Applications in Mechanics Analysis

    Yongtong Zheng1,* , Yijun Liu1, Xiaowei Gao1,2,3

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.27, No.3, pp. 1-1, 2023, DOI:10.32604/icces.2023.09774

Abstract Recently, a series of isoparametric boundary elements have been constructed to simulate the shape of holes, tubes, disks, rings and spheres based on the Lagrange interpolation formulation and the closure condition at two ends of an arc. These elements can simulate the models which contain the shapes mentioned above with less nodes and less elements than the conventional boundary elements. However, the basis of those elements, i.e., hole elements, have the poor accuracy when the number of nodes is less than 6. To improve these elements, two kinds of improvements are proposed in this study. The first one let more… More >

An Explicit and Non-Iterative Moving-Least-Squares Immersed-Boundary Method and Its Applications in the Aorta Hemodynamics with Type B Intramural Hematoma

    Wenyuan Chen1, Tao Zhang2, Yantao Yang1,*

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.27, No.3, pp. 1-1, 2023, DOI:10.32604/icces.2023.09754

Abstract Based on the moving-least-squares immersed boundary method, we proposed a new technique to improve the calculation of the volume force representing the body boundary. For boundary with simple geometry, we theoretically analyze the error between the desired volume force at boundary and the actual force applied by the original method. The ratio between the two forces is very close to a constant and exhibits a very narrow distribution. A spatially uniform coefficient is then introduced to correct the force and can be fixed by the least-square method over all boundary markers. Such method is explicit and non-iterative, and is easy… More >

The Nitsche’s Method and Applications in Isogeometric Analysis

    Qingyuan Hu1,*, Yuan Liang2

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.27, No.3, pp. 1-2, 2023, DOI:10.32604/icces.2023.09441

Abstract The Nitsche’s method is originally proposed as a technique to impose boundary conditions, nowadays it is widely used for isometric analysis (IGA) and corresponding topology optimization applications. Based on our previous research [1], we present a simple way to derive the Nitsche’s formulations for different kind of boundary and interface conditions, and studied this technique in the context of IGA discretization, especially for patch coupling and contact problems. The skew-symmetric variant of the Nitsche’s method is then further studied. For linear boundary or interface conditions, the skew-symmetric formulation is parameterfree. For contact conditions, it remains stable and accurate for a… More >

Evolutionary Neural Architecture Search and Its Applications in Healthcare

    Xin Liu1, Jie Li1,*, Jianwei Zhao2, Bin Cao2,*, Rongge Yan3, Zhihan Lyu4

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.139, No.1, pp. 143-185, 2024, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2023.030391

Abstract Most of the neural network architectures are based on human experience, which requires a long and tedious trial-and-error process. Neural architecture search (NAS) attempts to detect effective architectures without human intervention. Evolutionary algorithms (EAs) for NAS can find better solutions than human-designed architectures by exploring a large search space for possible architectures. Using multiobjective EAs for NAS, optimal neural architectures that meet various performance criteria can be explored and discovered efficiently. Furthermore, hardware-accelerated NAS methods can improve the efficiency of the NAS. While existing reviews have mainly focused on different strategies to complete NAS, a few studies have explored the… More > Graphic Abstract

    Narayanan Ganesh1, Rajendran Shankar2, Miroslav Mahdal3, Janakiraman Senthil Murugan4, Jasgurpreet Singh Chohan5, Kanak Kalita6,*

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.139, No.1, pp. 103-141, 2024, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2023.028018

Abstract Computer vision (CV) was developed for computers and other systems to act or make recommendations based on visual inputs, such as digital photos, movies, and other media. Deep learning (DL) methods are more successful than other traditional machine learning (ML) methods in CV. DL techniques can produce state-of-the-art results for difficult CV problems like picture categorization, object detection, and face recognition. In this review, a structured discussion on the history, methods, and applications of DL methods to CV problems is presented. The sector-wise presentation of applications in this paper may be particularly useful for researchers in niche fields who have… More >

FUNDAMENTALS AND APPLICATIONS OF NEAR-FIELD RADIATIVE ENERGY TRANSFER

    Keunhan Parka,∗, Zhuomin Zhangb

    Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.4, No.1, pp. 1-26, 2013, DOI:10.5098/hmt.v4.1.3001

Abstract This article reviews the recent advances in near-field radiative energy transfer, particularly in its fundamentals and applications. When the geometrical features of radiating objects or their separating distances fall into the sub-wavelength range, near-field phenomena such as photon tunneling and surface polaritons begin to play a key role in energy transfer. The resulting heat transfer rate can greatly exceed the blackbody radiation limit by several orders magnitude. This astonishing feature cannot be conveyed by the conventional theory of thermal radiation, generating strong demands in fundamental research that can address thermal radiation in the near field. Important breakthroughs of near-field thermal… More >
