Abstract The valorization of eggshell waste as bio-calcium oxide is crucial for pollution prevention and supporting sustainable development. There are several reports on the thermal conversion of eggshell waste to calcium oxide for the partial or complete substitution of natural lime applications. However, this paper reports the thermal decomposition of large amounts of hatchery eggshell waste on an industrial-scale car bottom furnace for the first time. The hatchery eggshell waste was sundried and placed into five stacked trays in the car bottom furnace. The calcination of the eggshell waste was conducted at 900°C for 3 and 4 h under an atmosphere… More > Graphic Abstract

Synthesis of Lignin-Based Polyacid in an Acidic Ionic Liquid: A Green Method to Improve the Performance of Lignin as Catalyst in Urea-Formaldehyde Resin

    Hamed Younesi-Kordkheili1,*, Antonio Pizzi2

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.10, No.2, pp. 237-246, 2022, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2022.017851

Abstract The aim of this research was to investigate the effect of ionic liquid treated lignin-based polyacid as a catalyst for urea-formaldehyde (UF) resins. Esterification of lignin was carried out, without any catalyst, with anhydride maleic and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hydrogen sulfate [Bmim][HSO4] as acidic ionic liquid to form maleated lignin-based polyacids (MA-IL). The performance of MA-IL as UF resin catalyst was respectively compared to hyroxymethylated lignin-based polyacid (MA-HL) and to NH4Cl. The FTIR analysis indicated that the proportion of -COOH and C-O bonds increased due to the esterification of lignin with ionic liquid rather than its hyroxymethylation. Physicochemical tests indicated that the… More >

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.9, No.7, pp. 1253-1266, 2021, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2021.014876

Abstract Dramatically increasing waste polyurethane rigid foam (WPRF) draws the attention of the world. A mixture of ethylene glycol (EG) and diethylene glycol (DEG) is used as glycolysis agents. WPRF was subjected to alcoholysis using different catalysts which are titanium ethylene glycol and potassium hydroxide to obtain recycled polyol, respectively. The effect of a different catalyst on the viscosity and hydroxyl value of recycled polyol is discussed. The regenerated polyurethane (RPU) is performed using the recycled polyol. Infrared spectrum, compressive strength, apparent density, water absorption, scanning electron microscope, and thermogravimetric analysis are carried out to investigate the effect of WPRF degradation… More >

    Energy Engineering, Vol.117, No.5, pp. 315-322, 2020, DOI:10.32604/EE.2020.011975

Abstract This research studied catalytic reforming mechanism of low concentration alcohol, analyzed the producing conditions and influencing factors of a mixture of combustible gas, took an analysis towards the composition of the mixture produced by reforming, and studied the respective effects of temperature, traffic, alcohol concentration and catalyst on the components of mixed gas. It is found that, under different working conditions of the engine, the external condition of the reforming reaction changes, and the composition of the reforming gas will differ as well. As a result, the optimum air-fuel ratio of the engine must at the same time adapt to… More >

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.16, No.3, pp. 573-584, 2020, DOI:10.32604/fdmp.2020.09591

Abstract In order to effectively implement DPF (Diesel Particulate Filters) regeneration control, thermal management of exhaust products before and inside Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) is necessary. In the present study, the Influence of the intake throttle valve and late post injection process on temperature rise inside DOC is analyzed through engine bench tests. The steady experiment results show that adjustment of the intake throttle valve can effectively increase exhaust temperature before DOC; in particular, with intake throttle valve opening at 20%, temperature before DOC can be increased by about 170°C with respect to the full opening. An increase in the late… More >

    Xianglong Lu1, Tianshui Yu1, Hailing Wang1, Ruichun Luo2, Pan Liu2, Songliu Yuan1, Lihua Qian1,*

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.8, No.2, pp. 133-151, 2020, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2020.08650

Abstract Hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in neutral medium suffers from slow kinetics as compared to that in alkaline or acidic conditions, owing to larger Ohmic loss and low proton concentration. Here we report that a self-supported nanoporous Au-SnOx (NP Au-SnOx) catalyst with gradient tin oxide surface could significantly enhance HER activity in neutral buffer solution (0.2 M PBS). The NP Au-SnOx catalyst exhibits a low onset overpotential of 38 mV and a small Tafel slope of 79 mV dec−1 . The current density of 10 mA cm−2 is manifested at an overpotential as low as 148 mV, representing the comparable performance… More >

Abstract Lactic acid can not only be used to produce multiple chemicals, but can also be the building block for biodegradable and biocompatible polylactic acid identified as a renewable resource. As a by-product in biodiesel production, the glycerol yield increases with a rapid expansion of biodiesel. However, in the chemical and environmental fields it is still a great challenge to produce lactic acid or methyl lactate from glycerol. Herein, Sn-Beta zeolite was prepared through solid-state ion exchange (Sn-Beta SSIE) and was tested for base-free one-pot catalytic selective oxidation of glycerol into methyl lactate in methanol. The results showed that a maximum… More >

    Xiongyi Liang*, Chi-Man Lawrence Wu

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.22, No.1, pp. 113-113, 2019, DOI:10.32604/icces.2019.05079

Abstract Ammonia (NH3) plays an essential role in agriculture to meet global population explosion. Although the atmosphere consists of more than 78% of Nitrogen (N2), industrial NH3 synthesis from atmospheric N2 gas requires harsh conditions of temperature (700~850 K) and pressure (50~200 atm), which annually consuming 2% of the world’s power. Recently, an electrocatalytic NH3 fixation process under ambient condition was introduced. With this, six protons and electrons are gradually added (6H+ + 6e- + N2= 2NH3), instead of breaking the triple bonds of N2 in the traditional method, thus saving dramatic amount of energy. Along this theme, the synthesis of… More >
