    Effects of Exogenous α-Ketoglutaric Acid on 2-Acetyl-1-Pyrroline, Yield Formation and Grain Quality Characters of Aromatic Rice

    Abstract The improvement of grain quality in aromatic rice is very important for farmer to increase their income. Present study was conducted with a two-year field experiment and three aromatic rice cultivars in order to study the effects of exogenous α-ketoglutaric acid on yield formation, grain quality characters and the biosynthesis of 2-acetyl-1-pyrroline (2-AP, key component of aromatic rice’s fragrance) in aromatic rice.     Leaf architecture characters of Vachellia tortilis (Forssk.) Galasso and Banfi along longitudinal gradient in Limpopo Province, South Africa

    Abstract This paper looked at the leaf architecture characteristics of Vachellia tortilis to determine if either there is or not an effect of the tropic line on plants. Vachellia tortilis leaves were sampled along a national road (N1) in Limpopo province. Sampling points were set 10 km apart away from the Tropic of Capricon in opposite directions. Leaf morphology revealed that leaves of V. tortilis are bipinnately compound with alternate arrangement. The venation pattern of the pinnules was eucamptodromus and brochidodromous with imperfect reticulation. Areoles were imperfect and pentagonal or irregular in shape. More >

    Cladistics of Mexican nopal genotypes (Opuntia spp.) based on AFLP markers and fruit characters

    Abstract Dendrograms were constructed based on AFLP markers and a table was used to group fruit characters of wild and cultivated genotypes of Mexican nopal (Opuntia spp.). The AFLP dendrogram obtained using ≈57.5 markers (from primers Mse I-CAC/Eco RI-AAG) did not agree with the known taxonomic classification for this species. Additionally, a complementary table for fruit characters (morphological and °Brix) showed a wide range for wild genotypes, e.g. from 21-22 °Brix for ‘Tapón Blanco’ and ‘Guilanche’ genotypes, to 5.0-8.2 °Brix for xoconostles (acidic fruits).     Abstract Pluchea microcephala (“cuatrocantos”, “lucera”) is a perennial native species from northern Argentina, Bolivia and NW of Perú, commonly used to treat digestive and hepatic disorders in humans. It grows in humid and saline soils, and bordering watercourses. Morphoanatomical characteristics of leaves, stems and capitula have been studied in order to determine the main diagnostic characters for the identification of this species.     Abstract Araujia hortorum (“tasi”) is a native species of South America, invading crops in several countries. It is used as food and in medicine due to its galactogenic properties. Morphoanatomical and micrographic characters of leaves, stems and roots were studied to determine diagnostic characters that allow its identification in the vegetative state.     Abstract Using Support Vector Machine (SVM) requires the selection of several parameters such as multi-class strategy type (one-against-all or one-against-one), the regularization parameter C, kernel function and their parameters. The choice of these parameters has a great influence on the performance of the final classifier.     Genetic diversity of water primrose (Ludwigia hyssopifolia) in Thailand based on morphological characters and RAPD analysis

    Abstract Genetic diversity and relatedness of 17 water primrose (Ludwigia hyssopifolia) accessions in Thailand were estimated using morphological characters and random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers. Eight morphological characters were diverse among the accessions. However, some accessions could not be distinguished from one another based on these morphological characters alone. Unweighted pair-group arithmetic average (UPGMA) analysis of these characters separated these 17 accessions into 2 major clusters.     Abstract The paper discusses the segmentation of words into characters, which is an essential task in the development process of character recognition systems, as poorly segmented characters will automatically be unrecognized. The segmentation of offline handwritten Arabic text poses a greater challenge because of its cursive nature and different writing styles. In this article, we propose a new approach to segment handwritten Arabic characters using an efficient analysis of the vertical projection histogram.
