Improved XFEM (IXFEM): Accurate, Efficient, Robust and Reliable Analysis for Arbitrary Multiple Crack Problems

    Lixiang Wang1, Longfei Wen2,3, Rong Tian2,3,*, Chun Feng1,4,*

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.30, No.3, pp. 1-2, 2024, DOI:10.32604/icces.2024.011137

Abstract The extended finite element method (XFEM) has been successful in crack analysis but faces challenges in modeling multiple cracks. One challenge is the linear dependence and ill-conditioning of the global stiffness matrix, while another is the geometric description for multiple cracks. To address the first challenge, the Improved XFEM (IXFEM) [1–9] is extended to handle multiple crack problems, effectively eliminating issues of linear dependence and ill-conditioning. Additionally, to overcome the second challenge, a novel level set templated cover cutting method (LSTCCM) [10] is proposed, which combines the advantages of the level set method and cover More >

Correction: A “Parallel Universe” Scheme for Crack Nucleation in the Phase Field Method for Fracture

    Yihao Chen1, Yongxing Shen1,*

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.30, No.2, pp. 1-1, 2024, DOI:10.32604/icces.2024.011251

Abstract The phase field method for fracture has become mainstream for fracture simulation. It transforms the crack nucleation problem into a minimization problem of the sum of the elastic potential energy and the crack surface energy. Because of the biconvexity of its energy functional, there is an energy barrier between local minima with and without a crack, resulting it difficult for standard methods, such as the Newton method, to converge to a cracked solution when starting from a solid without crack, especially when the material and the geometry are uniform, even if current cracked solution with… More >

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.30, No.1, pp. 1-2, 2024, DOI:10.32604/icces.2024.011484

Abstract As climate change accelerates due to fossil fuel use, geothermal energy emerges as an indispensable renewable solution 1. Hot dry rock (HDR) reservoirs, accounting for more than 90% of total geothermal resources 2, have gained wide attention worldwide for their abundant reserves, wide distribution, and carbon-free, stable, and efficient supply characteristics 3. While HDR geothermal energy offers significant potential, its development faces challenges, including the complex interaction between fluid flow, heat transfer, reactive solute transport, and the rock’s mechanical processes, referred to as the THMC coupling process 4. Cracks, ubiquitous in HDR geothermal reservoirs, exhibit… More >

Dynamic Crack Propagation of Ceramic Materials under High Temperature Thermal Shock

    Biao Xia1,2, Changxing Zhang2,3,*, Zhanli Liu2, Xue Feng2

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.29, No.3, pp. 1-2, 2024, DOI:10.32604/icces.2024.012764

Abstract Ceramics has become one of the most promising candidate materials in the aerospace field due to its advantages of high melting point, corrosion resistance, wear resistance, and high-temperature stability [1,2]. However, the inherent brittleness of ceramics makes it prone to thermal shock failure under high-temperature extreme environments, which can lead to sudden catastrophic accidents in the structure [3-6]. This paper takes the high-temperature resistant ceramic materials in the aerospace industry as the research object. And the dynamic crack propagation mechanism is analyzed. Through the computational method based on the extended finite element method (XFEM), the… More >

Phase-Field Modeling of Interfacial Fracture in Quasicrystal Composites

    Hongzhao Li1, Peidong Li1,*

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.29, No.2, pp. 1-1, 2024, DOI:10.32604/icces.2024.012711

Abstract Quasicrystals (QCs) are a new class of functional and structural materials with unusual properties, which have quasi-periodic translational symmetry and non-crystallographic rotational symmetry. Due to the special arrangement of atoms, compared with traditional materials, QCs have high strength, high hardness, and high wear resistance, and can be used as a particle reinforcement phase of polymer or metal matrix composites to improve the performance of materials. QC composites are a special type of composites in which the high strength and hardness of QCs can effectively enhance the mechanical properties of the composites while maintaining the lightweight… More >

The Effect of Fatigue Loading Frequency on the Fatigue Crack Growth Behavior of a Nickel-Based Superalloy: Experimental Investigation and Modelling

    Yi Shi1,*

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.29, No.2, pp. 1-1, 2024, DOI:10.32604/icces.2024.012366

Abstract The Nickel-based superalloy is wieldy applied in hot components of aero turbine engine due to its superior mechanical property at elevated temperature. However, the working condition of engine hot components are severe and thus the effect of high temperature, oxidation and time-dependent loading on fatigue crack growth behavior should be considered in structure analysis. In this study, first the effect of environment was experimentally investigated. Stand compact tension (CT) specimens under different temperatures and loading frequencies were tests to evaluate the role of temperature and time-dependent effect on fatigue crack growth. Results show that if… More >

An Energy-Based Local-Nonlocal Coupling Scheme for Heterogeneous Material Brittle Fractures: Analysis and Simulations

    Shaoqi Zheng1, Zihao Yang1,*

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.29, No.1, pp. 1-1, 2024, DOI:10.32604/icces.2024.012200

Abstract This study proposes a novel method for predicting the microcrack propagation in composites based on coupling the local and non-local micromechanics. The special feature of this method is that it can take full advantages of both the continuum micromechanics as a local model and peridynamic micromechanics as a non-local model to achieve composite fracture simulation with a higher level of accuracy and efficiency. Based on the energy equivalence, we first establish the equivalent continuum micromechanics model with equivalent stiffness operators through peridynamic micromechanics model. These two models are then coupled into a closed equation system, More >

Elastic Fields of Double Branched and Kalthoff-Winkler Cracks in a Half-Plane

    Yangjian Si1,2, Yujie Wei1,2,*

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.29, No.1, pp. 1-1, 2024, DOI:10.32604/icces.2024.011974

Abstract Edge cracking represents one of the most prominent damage modes in engineering practice and hence receives immense attention from academic societies. When branched cracks or multiple cracks are present at the edge, their propagation may be affected by the interaction between the cracks. In this talk, we may cover the elasticity of a cracked half-plane with two typical scenarios: a double branched crack with two rays emanating from one point on the edge and two edge cracks spaced by a certain distance (Kalthoff–Winkler cracks). By adopting the combination of the Schwartz-Christoffel conformal mapping and the… More >

    Qiuyi Wang1, Rong Yang1, Bo Chen2, Rui Bao1,*

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.29, No.1, pp. 1-1, 2024, DOI:10.32604/icces.2024.011878

Abstract Effects of hold time on the fatigue crack growth behavior in electron-beam powder-bed-fusion (PBF-EB) Inconel 718 alloy at 650 ∘C have been investigated in this study, with focuses on the anisotropic fatigue cracking resistance and fracture mechanism. The V-type specimen (which loading parallel to the columnar grain boundaries) gives better dwell-fatigue cracking resistance to the H-type specimen (which loading perpendicular to the columnar grain boundaries) due to its large deflections (nearly 90 °) on the crack path. These deflections are related to the change of crack growth mechanism. In both V-type and H-type specimens, when More >

Macroscopic Deflections of Fatigue Crack in Direct Energy Deposited Ti–5Al–5Mo–5V–1Cr–1Fe

    Binchao Liu1,2,*, Qiuyi Wang2, Rui Bao2

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.29, No.1, pp. 1-1, 2024, DOI:10.32604/icces.2024.011835

Abstract With the everlasting pursuit for weight reduction, efforts are devoted to applying additively manufactured (AM) structures in aeronautic vehicles; however, anomalous fatigue crack growth (FCG) behaviors, such as deflection and branching, are recently observed in macroscale, which deviates from the predictions by classic fracture mechanics. In this work, FCG behaviors of direct energy deposited (DED) Ti–5Al–5Mo–5V–1Cr–1Fe (TC18 in China) are investigated, in which fatigue crack deflections induced by combined impacts of loading and microstructures are revealed. Experiment results show that cracks are more deflected in columnar grains due to the preferred distribution of acicular a… More >
