A 66-kDa protein of bovine hypophyseal Pars tuberalis induces luteinizing hormone release from rat Pars distalis

    MARTHA LAFARQUE, LILIANA OLIVEROS

    BIOCELL, Vol.32, No.3, pp. 211-218, 2008, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2008.32.211

Abstract In this study, evidence for a factor secreted by bovine hypophyseal pars tuberalis that stimulates luteinizing hormone (LH) release from rat pars distalis cells is shown. The secretion products of bovine pars tuberalis cells into the culture medium were assayed on dispersed rat pars distalis cells in 30 min incubations and superfusion experiments. The culture medium from pars tuberalis total cell populations, added at a dose of 6 μg per tube, induced the greater LH release from pars distalis cells, without effect on follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) release. After pars tuberalis cells separation on a discontinuos Percoll gradient, only the… More >

    BIOCELL, Vol.30, No.3, pp. 469-477, 2006, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2006.30.469

Abstract Prior to this work, we found that adrenal as well as extra-adrenal factors activate the response of renal 11ß-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase 2 to stressful situations. These results -showing ways through which the organism hinders the pathological occupation of mineralocorticoid receptors by glucocorticoids leading to sodium retention and hypertension- prompted the present study on the nature of the above-mentioned extraadrenal factors. Serotonin was chosen because of its properties as a widely distributed neurohormone, known to interact with glucocorticoids at many sites, also exhibiting increased levels and effects under stressful situations. We studied serotonin effects on 11ß-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase 2 activity in a cell… More >

    Morales-Pérez E1, EJ Morales-Rosales2, O Franco-Mora2, D de Jesús Pérez-López2, A González-Huerta2, E Urbina Sánchez3

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.83, pp. 333-340, 2014, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2014.83.333

Abstract The aim of this study was to assess different doses of gibberellic and salicylic acids for the production of flowers on Gerbera jamesonni after applications to their foliage or substrate under greenhouse conditions. The ten treatments (growth regulators) were evaluated in a 10 x 2 factorial experiment in a randomized complete block design with four replications. When F values were significant, the honestly significant difference test (HSD) at the 5% level of significance was used. The principal components analysis was also used to study the interrelationship among the ten treatments and the two forms of application (foliar or substrate). The… More >

Indole-3-butyric acid on rooting and endogenous plant hormones in tetraploid and diploid Robinia pseudoacacia hardwood cuttings

    Wang XL1,2, Z Zhao1, JE Quan1

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.80, pp. 93-100, 2011, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2011.80.093

Abstract Robinia pseudoacacia (locust hereafter) is an ornamental tree with various uses. Both homologous tetraploid (tetraploid hereafter) and diploid cultivars are commercially available. The tetraploids have advantageous traits, but poor germinability, and cuttings are difficult to root. Since auxin applications can promote rooting, we evaluated the effects of dipping cuttings in various indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) concentrations for four hours on rooting parameters. IBA significantly affected all measured parameters of both tetraploid and diploids cuttings. Tetraploid cuttings produced no roots without IBA. The effects were strongest at 1000 and 800 mg/L IBA for tetraploids and diploids, respectively. Values for tetraploids and diploids… More >

Adverse effects induced by chromium VI, cadmium and arsenic exposure on hypothalamus-pituitary physiology

Jimena P. CABILLA, Sonia A. RONCHETTI, Beatriz H. DUVILANSKI*

    BIOCELL, Vol.40, No.1, pp. 15-18, 2016, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2016.40.015

Abstract Environmental contamination with some metalloids and heavy metals (M/HM) raises concern due to well known adverse effects on health. Among these pollutants, chromium VI (Cr VI), cadmium (Cd) and arsenic (As) are frequently present as a result of natural sources or due to industrial activities. They are able to easily enter the organism and negatively affect many organs and systems. In vivo (exposure to Cr VI, Cd or As through drinking water) and in vitro experiments (primary pituitary cell cultures) were performed in male Wistar rats to address their actions on hypothalamus-pituitary axis. All the M/HM accumulated in hypothalamus and… More >

    Qayyum S1, SA Majid1, A Bibi2, A Ulfat1, K Khanum1, A Munir1, S Nisar1, S Aziz1, N Mumtaz1

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.87, pp. 191-197, 2018, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2018.87.191

Abstract Maize (Zea mays L., the third most important cereal crop after wheat and rice, is the major kharif (summer) crop of rainfed areas in Pakistan. The yield per hectare and total production of maize in Pakistan is low versus an exponentially increasing population. The objective of this work was to study the interactive effects of phytohormones [Gibberellic acid (GA), Sodium nitroprusside (SNP), Abscicic acid (ABA) and kinetin (KIN)] on morphological, physiological and biochemical parameters during the germination of maize seeds. Seeds were presoaked in different hormones, separately or in combinations. Priming with GA+SNP+ABA+KIN enhanced the total fresh (TFW) and dry… More >

Identification of phytohormone changes and its related genes under abiotic stresses in transgenic rice

    Mohammad UBAIDILLAH1,2, Miswar FAPERTA1,2, Kyung-Min KIM1

    BIOCELL, Vol.43, No.3, pp. 215-224, 2019, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2019.07549

Abstract Abiotic stresses, such as drought and salinity, adversely affect plant growth and productivity. Comparison between non transgenic and transgenic rice harboring CaMsrB2 gene, which induces tolerance to abiotic stress, is important to observe response of gene under abiotic stress. Phytohormone showed a tendency to increase under the drought stress or salinity stress in the transgenic plant. RT-PCR analysis showed that gene expression and phytohormone levels under abiotic stress, to be closely related. The CaMsrB2 gene is related to the expression of JA and ABA hormones. Therefore, the level of expression of these genes and hormones was observed. The transcription levels… More >

A Theoretical Model for Simulating Effect of Parathyroid Hormone on Bone Metabolism at Cellular Level

Yanan Wang, Qing-Hua Qin, Shankar Kalyanasundaram

    Molecular & Cellular Biomechanics, Vol.6, No.2, pp. 101-112, 2009, DOI:10.3970/mcb.2009.006.101

Abstract A mathematical model is developed for simulating anabolic behaviour of bone affected by Parathyroid Hormone (PTH) in this paper. The model incorporates a new understanding on the interaction of PTH and other factors with the RANK-RANKL-OPG pathway into bone remodelling, which is able to simulate anabolic actions of bone induced by PTH at cellular level. The RANK-RANKL-OPG pathway together with the dual action of TGF-$\beta$, which represent the core of coupling behaviour between osteoblasts and osteoclasts which are two cell types specialising in the maintenance of bone integrity, are widely considered essential for the regulation of bone remodelling at cellular… More >
