    Xinli Zhang1, Jiayu Zhang1, Zuhua Zhang2,*, Yiqiang Wu1,*, Yingfeng Zuo1

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.11, No.1, pp. 27-40, 2023, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2023.023400

Abstract Geopolymer is a new alternative cement binder to produce concrete. In the present study, a novel geopolymer composites containing bamboo shaving (0–2 wt.%) were fabricated and exposed to the temperatures of 200°C, 400°C, 600°C and 800°C. Physical properties, micro-structure, and mechanical strengths of the geopolymer composites were evaluated before and after heating in order to understand their thermal properties, which are essential for the use as building materials. As the temperature rises, the drying shrinkage and apparent porosity of the composites increase, while the compressive and bending strengths decrease. At the temperature range of 200°C–800°C, the… More >

    Dianen Liang1, Zhenhao Ding1, Qilin Yan1, Redžo Hasanagić2, Leila Fathi3, Zi Yang1, Longhao Li1, Jianbo Wang1, Houhua Luo1, Qian Wang1, Demiao Chu1,*

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.11, No.1, pp. 435-451, 2023, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2022.023214

Abstract This study aims to improve the value of fast-growing wood and extend the heat-treated wood utilization using inorganic calcium carbonate (CaCO3) crystals via an in-situ synthesis method. CaCl2 and Na2CO3 solutions with a concentration ratio of 1:1 were successively introduced into the thermally modified poplar wood obtained by steam heat treatment (HT) at 200°C for 1.5 and 3 h, resulting in the in-situ synthesis of CaCO3 crystals inside the heat-treated wood. The filling effect was best at the concentration of 1.2 mol/L. CaCO3 was uniformly distributed in the cell cavities of the heat-treated wood, and some of the… More > Graphic Abstract

Effects of Strain Rate and Fiber Content on the Dynamic Mechanical Properties of Sisal Fiber Cement-Based Composites

Yubo Zhang, Ping Lei, Lina Wang, Jiqing Yang*

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.11, No.1, pp. 393-410, 2023, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2022.022659

Abstract In this paper, a split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) was used to investigate the dynamic impact mechanical behavior of sisal fiber-reinforced cement-based composites (SFRCCs), and the microscopic damage evolution of the composites was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS). The results show that the addition of sisal fibers improves the impact resistance of cement-based composite materials. Compared with ordinary cement-based composites (OCCs), the SFRCCs demonstrate higher post-peak strength, ductility, and energy absorption capacity with higher fiber content. Moreover, the SFRCCs are strain rate sensitive materials, and their peak stress, ultimate More >

A Comparison of Shale Gas Fracturing Based on Deep and Shallow Shale Reservoirs in the United States and China

    Qixing Zhang1,2, Bing Hou1,2,*, Huiwen Pang1,2, Shan Liu1,2, Yue Zeng1,2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.133, No.3, pp. 471-507, 2022, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2022.020831

Abstract China began to build its national shale gas demonstration area in 2012. The central exploration, drilling, and development technologies for medium and shallow marine shale reservoirs with less than 3,500 m of buried depth in Changning-Weiyuan, Zhaotong, and other regions had matured. In this study, we macroscopically investigated the development history of shale gas in the United States and China and compared the physical and mechanical conditions of deep and shallow reservoirs. The comparative results revealed that the main reasons for the order-ofmagnitude difference between China’s annual shale gas output and the United States could… More >

Physical and Mechanical Properties of Catalpa bungei Clones and Estimation of the Properties by Near-Infrared Spectroscopy

Rui Wang, Lanlan Shi, Yurong Wang*

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.10, No.12, pp. 3285-3302, 2022, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2022.020546

Abstract Air-dry density, modulus of rupture (MOR), modulus of elasticity (MOE), compressive strength parallel to grain, and hardness of Catalpa bungei clones were investigated in this study with feasibility of predicting these properties by near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy. The best candidate ‘Luoqiu 3’ has been selected from three clones based on wood physical and mechanical property indices. Lower values of wood physical and mechanical properties have been found in the corewood compared to the outerwood. There were significant positive correlations between the air-dry density and mechanical properties. Information from cross section for air-dry density, compressive strength parallel to More >

    Kangze Yuan1, Kui Liu1,2,*, Guoyang Yi3, Bowen Yang2

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.10, No.12, pp. 3611-3627, 2022, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2022.022458

Abstract Cement Stabilized Loess (CSL) sample has a long history as a method of improving building foundations. In this paper, the main physical (specific gravity, consistency limit, optimum moisture content, and maximum dry density) and mechanical properties (Unconfined Compressive Strength (UCS) and shear strength parameters) of CSL samples with different cement content were investigated, and the change reasons were explored by mean of SEM test. Meanwhile, quantitative analysis software Image-Pro Plus (IPP) 6.0 was used to characterize the microstructural evolution of pores in compacted loess and CSL sample. As the cement content increased, the specific gravity… More > Graphic Abstract

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.10, No.12, pp. 3201-3215, 2022, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2022.022090

Abstract Novel branched silicone methacrylate was developed. The mechanical and biological properties of the resin system were investigated to select the formula proportion with the best overall performance. The novel silicone-containing monomers were combined with an incremental sequence of glass filler concentrations in commonly used Bis-GMA/TEGDMA (50/50, wt./wt.) dental resin systems. Physicochemical properties, surface properties, antibacterial adhesion effect, anti-biofilm effect, protein adsorption, and cytotoxicity were evaluated. The results showed that BSMs did not affect the double bond conversion of dental resin, but could reduce volumetric shrinkage (p < 0.05). The BSM containing resins can resist protein and… More >
