Towards Lessening Learners’ Aversive Emotions and Promoting Their Mental Health: Developing and Validating a Measurement of English Speaking Demotivation in the Chinese EFL Context

    Chili Li1, Xinxin Zhao2, Ziwen Pan3, Ting Yi4, Long Qian5,6,*

    International Journal of Mental Health Promotion, Vol.26, No.2, pp. 161-175, 2024, DOI:10.32604/ijmhp.2023.029896

Abstract While a plethora of studies has been conducted to explore demotivation and its impact on mental health in second language (L2) education, scanty research focuses on demotivation in L2 speaking learning. Particularly, little research explores the measures to quantify L2 speaking demotivation. The present two-phase study attempts to develop and validate an English Speaking Demotivation Scale (ESDS). To this end, an independent sample of 207 Chinese tertiary learners of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) participated in the development phase, and another group of 188 Chinese EFL learners was recruited for the validation of the scale. Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA)… More >

Regulating Empathy: Exploring the Process through Agents and Strategies

    Ke Jia, Xiuli Liu*

    International Journal of Mental Health Promotion, Vol.25, No.12, pp. 1265-1285, 2023, DOI:10.32604/ijmhp.2023.043430

Abstract Empathy is a complex emotional phenomenon that plays a crucial role in promoting cooperation and social cohesion within human society. However, there is ongoing debate regarding the mechanisms that underlie the generation of empathy. While the importance of biological emotional resonance in empathy is widely recognized, the influence of cognitive regulation on empathetic responses cannot be disregarded. This article seeks to review the agents and strategies involved in regulating empathy to construct a dynamic model depicting the process. The model highlights that the impact of specific goals on empathy regulation is not definitive; rather, it depends on an individual’s interpretation… More >

Implementation of Strangely Behaving Intelligent Agents to Determine Human Intervention During Reinforcement Learning

Christopher C. Rosser, Wilbur L. Walters, Abdulghani M. Abdulghani, Mokhles M. Abdulghani, Khalid H. Abed*

    Journal on Artificial Intelligence, Vol.4, No.4, pp. 261-277, 2022, DOI:10.32604/jai.2022.039703

Abstract Intrinsic motivation helps autonomous exploring agents traverse a larger portion of their environments. However, simulations of different learning environments in previous research show that after millions of timesteps of successful training, an intrinsically motivated agent may learn to act in ways unintended by the designer. This potential for unintended actions of autonomous exploring agents poses threats to the environment and humans if operated in the real world. We investigated this topic by using Unity’s Machine Learning Agent Toolkit (ML-Agents) implementation of the Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO) algorithm with the Intrinsic Curiosity Module (ICM) to train autonomous exploring agents in three… More >

Determinants of State of Mental Health among Caregivers of Children with Disabilities

Paul Timileyin Kehinde1, Olufemi Timothy Adigun2,3,*, Gideon Kwesi Obosu4, Thanduxolo Peace Mngomezulu5

    International Journal of Mental Health Promotion, Vol.25, No.6, pp. 721-734, 2023, DOI:10.32604/ijmhp.2022.027105

Abstract This study aimed to determine the association and predictive capacities of job satisfaction, workplace stress, work motivation, and self-esteem on state of mental health of caregivers of children with disabilities in South-West Nigeria. The self-determination theory provided a theoretical framework for the study. A closed-ended paper-pencil questionnaire tagged ‘Mental Healthiness Scale for Caregivers’ was used for data collection from 241 caregivers of children with disabilities. Data collected was analyzed using descriptive of frequency count, simple percentage and mean as well as inferential statistics involving Pearson product moment correlation and Binary Logistic Regression at 95% confidence interval. Findings revealed a significant… More >

A Review of Smart Contract Blockchain Based on Multi-Criteria Analysis: Challenges and Motivations

    Norah M. Alshahrani1,2,*, M. L. Mat Kiah1,*, B. B. Zaidan3, A. H. Alamoodi4, Abdu Saif5

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.75, No.2, pp. 2833-2858, 2023, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2023.036138

Abstract A smart contract is a digital program of transaction protocol (rules of contract) based on the consensus architecture of blockchain. Smart contracts with Blockchain are modern technologies that have gained enormous attention in scientific and practical applications. A smart contract is the central aspect of a blockchain that facilitates blockchain as a platform outside the cryptocurrency spectrum. The development of blockchain technology, with a focus on smart contracts, has advanced significantly in recent years. However, research on the smart contract idea has weaknesses in the implementation sectors based on a decentralized network that shares an identical state. This paper extensively… More >

How Do Mind-Body Practices Benefit Employees? A Daily Diary Study of Mind–Body Practices after Work and Employees’ Next-Day Proactive Behavior

    Puwen Shang1, Jinfan Zhou2,*, Guanglei Zhang1

    International Journal of Mental Health Promotion, Vol.25, No.1, pp. 45-62, 2023, DOI:10.32604/ijmhp.2023.026606

Abstract Although it is becoming increasingly popular for organizations to offer programs of mind–body practices to their employees to improve their physical and mental health, the effects that after-work sessions of mind–body practices have on employees’ work behavior remain unclear. Using the model of proactive motivation and experience sampling, this study explored the relationship between employees’ mind–body practices after work and their proactive behavior in the workplace on the following day. A multilevel path analysis of data from 82 employees over seven consecutive workdays showed that employees’ mind–body practices after work had a positive effect on their proactive behavior in the… More >
