    Energy Engineering, Vol.121, No.5, pp. 1127-1141, 2024, DOI:10.32604/ee.2024.046861

Abstract Efforts to protect electric power systems from faults have commonly relied on the use of ultra-high frequency (UHF) antennas for detecting partial discharge (PD) as a common precursor to faults. However, the effectiveness of existing UHF antennas suffers from a number of challenges such as limited bandwidth, relatively large physical size, and low detection sensitivity. The present study addresses these issues by proposing a compact microstrip patch antenna with fixed dimensions of 100 mm × 100 mm × 1.6 mm. The results of computations yield an optimized antenna design consisting of 2nd-order Hilbert fractal units positioned within a four-layer serpentine… More > Graphic Abstract

    Energy Engineering, Vol.120, No.9, pp. 2115-2132, 2023, DOI:10.32604/ee.2023.027198

Abstract In response to the problem of frequent leakage and false alarm of partial discharge insulation defects in GIS, this paper conducts experimental research on intermittent discharge characteristics of common solid insulation defects in GIS. Using true GIS to build a multi-source testing platform for intermittent discharge of solid insulation defects, and using pulse current method, ultra-high frequency method, ultrasonic method, and gas characteristic component detection method to study the variation law of intermittent discharge characteristics of solid insulation defects. The results show that: the intermittent discharge state of metal fouling defects on the solid insulation surface decreases with the extension… More >

External UHF Sensor for GIS PD Insulation Defect from Resin Hole

    Li Xiao1,2, Xu Yang1,2,*, Guozhi Zhang1,2, Lin Cheng1,2, Yi Jiang1,2, Chuanxian Luo1,2, Jing Zhang1,2

    Energy Engineering, Vol.120, No.5, pp. 1239-1252, 2023, DOI:10.32604/ee.2023.025530

Abstract In view of the effective perception demand of PD (Partial Discharge) insulation defect of in-service GIS (Gas Insulated Switchgear), the external UHF (Ultra High Frequency, 0.3−3 GHz) sensing technology for GIS PD insulation defect from resin hole is studied in this paper. Firstly, rectangular waveguide theory is used to analyze the electromagnetic wave propagation characteristics from rectangular resin hole in GIS disc insulator. It is found that the energy of leaked electromagnetic wave mainly concentrates in the frequency band above 1 GHz. Then based on this frequency band characteristics, a cavity-backed bowtie sensor for GIS PD external detection is designed… More >

Electrical Tree Image Segmentation Using Hybrid Multi Scale Line Tracking Algorithm

Mohd Annuar Isa1, Mohamad Nur Khairul Hafizi Rohani1,*, Baharuddin Ismail1, Mohamad Kamarol Jamil1, Muzamir Isa1, Afifah Shuhada Rosmi1, Mohd Aminudin Jamlos2, Wan Azani Mustafa1, Nurulbariah Idris3, Abdullahi Abubakar Mas’ud4

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.75, No.1, pp. 741-760, 2023, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2023.036077

Abstract Electrical trees are an aging mechanism most associated with partial discharge (PD) activities in crosslinked polyethylene (XLPE) insulation of high-voltage (HV) cables. Characterization of electrical tree structures gained considerable attention from researchers since a deep understanding of the tree morphology is required to develop new insulation material. Two-dimensional (2D) optical microscopy is primarily used to examine tree structures and propagation shapes with image segmentation methods. However, since electrical trees can emerge in different shapes such as bush-type or branch-type, treeing images are complicated to segment due to manifestation of convoluted tree branches, leading to a high misclassification rate during segmentation.… More >

Deep Learning Based Power Transformer Monitoring Using Partial Discharge Patterns

    D. Karthik Prabhu1,*, R. V. Maheswari2, B. Vigneshwaran2

    Intelligent Automation & Soft Computing, Vol.34, No.3, pp. 1441-1454, 2022, DOI:10.32604/iasc.2022.024128

Abstract Measurement and recognition of Partial Discharge (PD) in power apparatus is considered a protuberant tool for condition monitoring and assessing the state of a dielectric system. During operating conditions, PD may occur either in the form of single and multiple patterns in nature. Currently, for PD pattern recognition, deep learning approaches are used. To evaluate spatial order less features from the large-scale patterns, a pre-trained network is used. The major drawback of traditional approaches is that they generate high dimensional data or requires additional steps like dictionary learning and dimensionality reduction. However, in real-time applications, interference incorporated in the measured… More >
