In vitro Response of the Bone Marrow-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells Seeded in a Type-I Collagen-Glycosaminoglycan Scaffold for Skin Wound Repair Under the Mechanical Loading Condition

    Masanori Kobayashi, Myron Spector

    Molecular & Cellular Biomechanics, Vol.6, No.4, pp. 217-228, 2009, DOI:10.3970/mcb.2009.006.217

Abstract In order to achieve successful wound repair by regenerative tissue engineering using mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), it is important to understand the response of stem cells in the scaffold matrix to mechanical stress.
To investigate the clinical effects of mechanical stress on the behavior of cells in scaffolds, bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) were grown on a type-I collagen-glycosaminoglycan (GAG) scaffold matrix for one week under cyclic stretching loading conditions.
The porous collagen-GAG scaffold matrix for skin wound repair was prepared, the harvested canine MSCs were seeded on the scaffold, and cultured under three kinds of cyclic… More >

    Zhe Liu1, Charlie Maere1,*, Yuqing Song1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.59, No.2, pp. 669-686, 2019, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2019.04590

Abstract Accurately finding the region of interest is a very vital step for segmenting organs in medical image processing. We propose a novel approach of automatically identifying region of interest in Computed Tomography Image (CT) images based on temporal and spatial data . Our method is a 3 stages approach, 1) We extract organ features from the CT images by adopting the Hounsfield filter. 2)We use these filtered features and introduce our novel approach of selecting observable feature candidates by calculating contours’ area and automatically detect a seed point. 3) We use a novel approach to track the growing region changes… More >

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.108, No.1, pp. 49-65, 2015, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2015.108.049

Abstract Extreme learning machine (ELM) has demonstrated great potential in machine learning and data mining fields owing to its simplicity, rapidity and good generalization performance. In this work, a general framework for ELM regression is first investigated based on least absolute deviation (LAD) estimation (called LADELM), and then we develop two regularized LADELM formulations with the l2-norm and l1-norm regularization, respectively. Moreover, the proposed models are posed as simple linear programming or quadratic programming problems. Furthermore, the proposed models are used directly to analyze the hard rate of licorice seeds using near-infrared spectroscopy data. Experimental results on eight different spectral regions… More >

A New Minimax Probabilistic Approach and Its Application in Recognition the Purity of Hybrid Seeds

    Liming Yang1, Yongping Gao2, Qun Sun3

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.104, No.6, pp. 493-506, 2015, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2015.104.493

Abstract Minimax probability machine (MPM) has been recently proposed and shown its advantage in pattern recognition. In this paper, we present a new minimax probabilistic approach (MPA),which can provide an explicit lower bound on prediction accuracy. Applying the Chebyshev-Cantelli inequality, the MPA is posed as a second order cone program formulation and solved effectively. Following that, this method is exploited directly to recognize the purity of hybrid seeds using near-infrared spectroscopic data. Experimental results in different spectral regions show that the proposed MPA is competitive with the existing minimax probability machine and support vector machine in generalization, while requires less computational… More >

    E. P. Yalcintas1, J. Hu1, Y. Liu1,2, A. Voloshin1,2,3

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.98, No.2, pp. 151-180, 2014, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2014.098.151

Abstract Mechanical behavior of cells plays a crucial role in response to external stimuli and environment. It is very important to elucidate the mechanisms of cellular activities like spreading and alignment as it would shed light on further biological concepts. In this study, a multi-scale computational approach is adopted by modeling the cytoskeleton of cell as a tensegrity structure. The model is based on the complementary force balance between the tension and compression elements, resembling the internal structure of cell cytoskeleton composed of microtubules and actin filaments. The effect of surface topology on strain energy of a spread cell is investigated… More >

Modeling and Simulation of Phantom Temperature Field in Magnetic Induction Hyperthermia

    J.H. Wu1, L.Y. Zhu2, J.T. Tang3

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.86, No.3, pp. 225-240, 2012, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2012.086.225

Abstract Magnetic induction hyperthermia is one of hopeful methods for tumor therapy. In this method, several ferromagnetic seeds are needed to be implanted into the tumor. The seeds would produce energy, and cause the nearby tumor to die. Temperature prediction is significant before treatment. In addition, in clinical treatment, the tumor temperature has to be monitored in realtime. However, using as few thermometers as possible is the basic principle. Fortunately, the numerical simulation can contribute to realtime measurement. The seed temperature is modeled based on the Haider's method, which is treated as the thermal boundary in numerical simulation. We employ the… More >

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.57, No.3, pp. 571-587, 2018, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2018.02851

Abstract The explosive growth of mobile data demand is becoming an increasing burden on current cellular network. To address this issue, we propose a solution of opportunistic data offloading for alleviating overloaded cellular traffic. The principle behind it is to select a few important users as seeds for data sharing. The three critical steps are detailed as follows. We first explore individual interests of users by the construction of user profiles, on which an interest graph is built by Gaussian graphical modeling. We then apply the extreme value theory to threshold the encounter duration of user pairs. So, a contact graph… More >

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.55, No.1, pp. 151-163, 2018, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2018.055.151

Abstract Steganography technology has been widely used in data transmission with secret information. However, the existing steganography has the disadvantages of low hidden information capacity, poor visual effect of cover images, and is hard to guarantee security. To solve these problems, steganography using reversible texture synthesis based on seeded region growing and LSB is proposed. Secret information is embedded in the process of synthesizing texture image from the existing natural texture. Firstly, we refine the visual effect. Abnormality of synthetic texture cannot be fully prevented if no approach of controlling visual effect is applied in the process of generating synthetic texture.… More >
