Valorization of Kraft Lignin as Thickener in Castor Oil for Lubricant Applications

    A. M. Borrero-López1, F. J. Santiago-Medina1, C. Valencia1,2*, M. E. Eugenio3, R. Martin-Sampedro3, J. M. Franco1,2

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.6, No.4, pp. 347-361, 2018, DOI:10.7569/JRM.2017.634160

Abstract It is known that large amounts of residual lignin are generated in the pulp and paper industry. A new alternative for Kraft lignin valorization, which consists of first a chemical modification using a diisocyanate and then the efficient dispersion in castor oil to achieve stable gel-like systems, is proposed in this work. Rheological properties and microstructure of these materials were determined by means of small amplitude oscillatory shear tests and viscous flow measurements and atomic force microscopy observations, respectively. Moreover, both standardized penetration tests and tribological assays, usually performed in the lubricant industry, were carried out to evaluate the performance… More >

The Role of Bamboo Nanoparticles in Kenaf Fiber Reinforced Unsaturated Polyester Composites

    Enih Rosamah1, Abdul Khalil H.P.S.2*, S.W. Yap2, Chaturbhuj K. Saurabh2, Paridah M. Tahir3, Rudi Dungani4, Abdulwahab F. Owolabi2

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.6, No.1, pp. 75-86, 2018, DOI:10.7569/JRM.2017.634152

Abstract In this study, bamboo nanoparticles in concentration ranges from 0–5% were incorporated along with woven/nonwoven kenaf fiber mat into unsaturated polyester and the developed composites were further characterized. Bamboo chips were subjected to ball milling process for the synthesis of nanoparticles with a particle size of 52.92 nm. The effect that the incorporation of nanoparticles had on various properties of reinforced composites was further observed. Due to the high surface area of nanoparticles, incorporation of 3% of nanofillers contributed towards strong bonding and better wettability with matrix, thus resulting in excellent mechanical properties and thermal characteristics in reinforced unsaturated polyester… More >

Effect of Epoxidized Jatropha Oil on the Cure, Thermal, Morphological and Viscoelastic Properties of Epoxy Resins

    A. Sammaiah1, K. V. Padmaja1, K. I. Suresh*,2, R. B. N. Prasad1

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.4, No.2, pp. 113-122, 2016, DOI:10.7569/JRM.2015.634118

Abstract This article reports the effect of epoxidized jatropha oil (EJO) on the thermal, cure and viscoelastic properties of epoxy resins. Epoxidized jatropha oil with an oxirane value of 5.0 was prepared and epoxy formulations containing different concentrations of EJO were evaluated for cure, morphology, thermal and viscoelastic properties. The curing temperature of the formulations increased with increasing EJO content. The glass transition temperature of the cured films decreased from 56 °C for unmodified epoxy resin to 23 °C for the sample with 60 wt% EJO reactive diluent, suggesting good plasticizing action. The thermal decomposition was only marginally affected. More >

Mechanical and Thermal Properties of High-Density Rigid Polyurethane Foams from Renewable Resources

    M. Kirpluks1*, U. Cabulis1, A. Ivdre1, M. Kuranska2, M. Zieleniewska3, M. Auguscik3

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.4, No.1, pp. 86-100, 2016, DOI:10.7569/JRM.2015.634132

Abstract The most common sustainable solution for polyurethane (PU) materials is their production using renewable resources. Polyols derived from biomass and recycled polymers are the most promising way to do that. This study compares five different sustainable polyols as a possible raw material for production of highdensity rigid PU foams for automotive application. The goal of our study was to show that biobased polyols are a suitable replacement for polyols derived from petrochemical products. The influence of the chemical structure of polyols on the PU polymer matrix and foam properties was investigated. Two sources of PU raw material feedstock were studied:… More >

Computational Studies on Mechanical and Thermal Properties of Carbon Nanotube Based Nanostructures

    Arnab Chakrabarty1, Tahir Çağin1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.7, No.3, pp. 167-190, 2008, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2008.007.167

Abstract The excellent set of properties of carbon nanotube and carbon nanotube-based nanostructures has been established by various studies. However the claimed property values and trends have not been unanimously agreed upon. Using state of the art molecular dynamics and ab initio methods, we have extensively studied the mechanical, thermal and structural properties of carbon nanotubes and carbon nanotube based nanostructures. Additionally this study aims to address the approaches used in various studies to assess the validity and influence of various definitions used for determining the physical properties as reported in earlier experiments and theoretical calculations. We have come up with… More >
