Abstract Wood plays a major role in the production of furniture and wooden structures. Nevertheless, in this process, the massive use of adhesives and plural connectors remains a definite problem for health and the environment. Therefore, wood welding is a breakthrough in this respect. This paper reviews the applications of wood welding in furniture and construction and then examines advances in improving the durability of welded wood against water. Our contribution also highlights the need to join African tropical woods using the rotational friction welding technique. According to our results, these woods present interesting chemical singularities, More >

Development of a Novel Extrusion Process for Preparing Rice Straw/LLDPE Composites

Huicheng Xu, Hao Xie, Weidong Shan, Weihong Wang*

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.11, No.3, pp. 1123-1135, 2023, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2022.023959 - 31 October 2022

Abstract Straw utilization is a key issue related to agricultural production and air pollution control. In this study, a novel extrusion process was proposed to improve the physical and mechanical properties of the straw-reinforced linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) composite. Instead of crushing the straw and mixing it with plastic matrix, the new method mixes straw with plastic matrix in its original form. The intact long rice straws were parallelly spread on the LLDPE film and then rolled up together into a prefabricated roll. The rolls experienced three extrusion processes as follows: (1) twin-screw melting, cooling and… More >

Abstract Gallium nitride (GaN)/porous silicon (PSi) film was prepared using a pulsed laser deposition method and 1064 nm Nd: YAG laser for optoelectronic applications and a series of Psi substrates were fabricated using a photoelectrochemical etching method assisted by laser at different etching times for 2.5–15 min at 2.5 min intervals. X-ray diffraction, room-temperature photoluminescence, atomic force microscopy and field emission scanning electron microscopy images, and electrical characteristics in the prepared GaN on the Psi film were investigated. The optimum Psi substrate was obtained under the following conditions: 10 min, 10 mA/cm2, and 24% hydrofluoric acid. The substrate exhibited two highly cubic… More >

    Qianyu Zhang1,2, Antonio Pizzi3, Hong Lei1,2,*, Xuedong Xi1,2,*, Ming Cao1,2, Long Cao1,2

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.11, No.3, pp. 1439-1450, 2023, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2022.023535 - 31 October 2022

Abstract Soy protein adhesives are currently a hot research topic in the wood panels industry for the abundant raw material reserves, reasonable price and outstanding environmental features. But their poor water resistance, low bonding strength and intolerance to mold are major drawbacks, so that proper modification before use is essential. Glutaraldehyde is one of the more apt cross-linking agents for soybean protein adhesives, which can effectively improve the bonding strength and water resistance of the adhesive. Equally, glutaraldehyde is also an efficient and broad-spectrum fungicide that can significantly improve the anti-fungal properties of a soy protein… More > Graphic Abstract

Classification of Principal Wood Species in China Based on the Physiomechanical Properties

    Jianyi Zhu1, Hui Peng1,2, Xiaoning Lu1,2, Jianxiong Lyu1,2,3, Tianyi Zhan1,2,*

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.11, No.3, pp. 1425-1437, 2023, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2022.023464 - 31 October 2022

Abstract Many tree species are planted in China with variable properties and usage. Toward exploring the structure-properties relationships of wood and classifying the species more reasonably, the physiomechanical properties of the domestic wood species in China were analyzed statistically. According to the correlation analysis, the mechanical properties were closely related to the wood density. Except impact toughness and cleavage strength, the correlation coefficients between mechanical properties and densities were more than 0.8. However, shrinkage properties showed fewer correlations with densities, and the coefficient was no more than 0.7. Primary component analysis was proved to be feasible… More >

Abstract A tung oil-based boron-nitrogen coordination polymer (TWE-BN) was specially designed and synthesized as a highly efficient water-based lubricant additive, which has been beneficial to both energy conservation and conducive to environmental protection. Its hydrolysis stability and tribological properties in water were investigated. To better research the lubricating properties, and thus to understand the interaction between the surface and the lubricating additives. Herein, both experimental and theoretical computations based on density functional theory (DFT) were performed. The addition of TWE-BN reduces the water friction coefficient and wear scar diameter, and the maximum non-seizure load increased from More > Graphic Abstract
