    S. D. Akbarov1,2, S. Karakaya3

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.22, No.1, pp. 1-38, 2011, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2011.022.001

Abstract The 3D approach was employed for investigations of the stability loss of the solid circular cylinder made from viscoelastic composite material. This approach is based on investigations of the evolution of the initial infinitesimal imperfections of the cylinder within the scope of 3D geometrically nonlinear field equations of the theory of viscoelasticity for anisotropic bodies. The numerical results of the critical forces and critical time are presented and discussed. To illustrate the importance of the results obtained using the 3D approach, these results are compared with the corresponding ones obtained by employing various approximate beam theories. The viscoelasticity properties of… More >

    Zhao Huiming1, Dong Zhengzhu1, Chen Jiarui1, Yang Min1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.21, No.3, pp. 209-216, 2011, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2011.021.209

Abstract The advantages of coupling of a natural boundary element method and a finite element method are introduced. Then we discuss the principle of the direct coupling of NBEM and FEM and its implementation. The comparison of the results between the direct coupling method and FEM proves that the direct coupling method is simple, feasible and valid in practice. More >

    Le-Le Zhang1, Xue-Qian Fang1, Jin-Xi Liu1, Ji-Hong Ma1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.21, No.3, pp. 171-186, 2011, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2011.021.171

Abstract On the basis of continuum surface elasticity, two interacting cylindrical nano-inhomogeneities with surface/interface effect in a small-sized solid under anti-plane shear waves are investigated, and the dynamic stress around the nano-inhomogeneities is analyzed. The wave function expansion method is used to expressed the wave field around the two nano-inhomogeneities. The total wave field is obtained by the addition theorem for cylindrical wave function. Through analysis, it is found that the distance between the two nano-inhomogeneities shows great effect on the dynamic stress in nano composites. The effect of the distance is also related to the properties of the nano-inhomogeneities and… More >

    W.H. Chen1, C.W. Hong1,2

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.21, No.2, pp. 147-170, 2011, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2011.021.147

Abstract Nanorod/nanowell/nanotube arrays are effective nanotechnologies that can increase the performance of a photo-electrochemical solar cell by increasing the reaction area of the working electrode. However, the confined space due to the nano-arrays also tends to decrease the redox ion diffusivity. This paper describes computer modeling on the ionic diffusion of the active species (I-/I3-) among the nano-arrays of the working electrode material (TiO2). A three dimensional periodic boundary molecular dynamics simulation technique is employed to simulate the nano-scale transport phenomenon. Performance improvement tendency can be evaluated from the Butler-Volmer equation. Simulation results reveal that the increasing reaction area times the… More >

    S. H. Kwon1, B. R. Kim2, H. K. Lee2,3

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.21, No.1, pp. 65-86, 2011, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2011.021.065

Abstract The electromagnetic shielding effectiveness of grid-mesh films made of polyaniline was numerically investigated, and the optimal size of the polyaniline grid was determined through numerical analyses. The permittivity of polyaniline was first determined from an inverse analysis based on experimental data. A series of numerical analyses were carried out with 225 polyaniline grid-mesh films of different thickness, spacing, and width, and the shielding effectiveness of every grid was examined. In addition to the numerical analysis, the transparency of the grid-mesh films and the amount of polyaniline material required to manufacture the unit grid area (1mx1m) were calculated. The optimal dimensions… More >

Computation of Dyadic Green's Functions for Electrodynamics in Quasi-Static Approximation with Tensor Conductivity

    V.G.Yakhno1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.21, No.1, pp. 1-16, 2011, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2011.021.001

Abstract Homogeneous non-dispersive anisotropic materials, characterized by a positive constant permeability and a symmetric positive definite conductivity tensor, are considered in the paper. In these anisotropic materials, the electric and magnetic dyadic Green's functions are defined as electric and magnetic fields arising from impulsive current dipoles and satisfying the time-dependent Maxwell's equations in quasi-static approximation. A new method of deriving these dyadic Green's functions is suggested in the paper. This method consists of several steps: equations for electric and magnetic dyadic Green's functions are written in terms of the Fourier modes; explicit formulae for the Fourier modes of dyadic Green's functions… More >

Numerical Simulations on Piezoresistivity of CNT/Polymer Based Nanocomposites

    Alamusi1, Y.L. Liu1, N. Hu1,2

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.20, No.2, pp. 101-118, 2010, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2010.020.101

Abstract In this work, we propose a 3 dimensional (3D) numerical model to predict the piezoresistivity behaviors of a nanocomposite material made from an insulating polymer filled by carbon nanotubes (CNTs). This material is very hopeful for its application in highly sensitive strain sensor by measuring its piezoresistivity, i.e., the ratio of resistance change versus applied strain. In this numerical approach, a 3D resistor network model is firstly proposed to predict the electrical conductivity of the nanocomposite with a large amount of randomly dispersed CNTs under the zero strain state. By focusing on the fact that the piezoresistivity of the nanocomposite… More >

Numerical Analysis of Large Strain Simple Shear and Fixed-End Torsion of HCP Polycrystals

    H. Wang1, Y. Wu2, P.D. Wu1, K.W. Neale3

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.19, No.3, pp. 255-284, 2010, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2010.019.255

Abstract Large strain homogeneous simple shear of Hexagonal Close Packed (HCP) polycrystals is first studied numerically. The analyses are based on the classical Taylor model and the Visco-Plastic Self-Consistent (VPSC) model with various Self-Consistent Schemes (SCSs). In these polycrystal plasticity models, both slip and twinning contribute to plastic deformations. The simple shear results are then extended to the case of solid circular bars under large strain fixed-end torsion, where it is assumed that the solid bar has the same mechanical properties as the element analyzed for large strain simple shear. It is shown that the predicted second-order axial force is very… More >

Effects of Loading Conditions on Deformation Process in Indentation

    M. Demiral, A. Roy, V. V. Silberschmidt1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.19, No.2, pp. 199-216, 2010, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2010.019.199

Abstract Static indentation experiments are typically performed to characterize the mechanical properties of a material of interest by a rigid indenter of known geometry to various depths. In contrast, dynamic indentation of materials has not been fully studied. Evaluating material performance under dynamic loading conditions is a challenge and we demonstrate that various modelling schemes may be appropriate for different flavours of dynamic indentation. In order to compare underlying thermo-mechanics and deformation processes in a static and dynamic indentation process, indentation of a rigid indenter into a workpiece to a fixed chosen penetration is extensively studied. A nonlinear strain rate and… More >

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.19, No.2, pp. 135-154, 2010, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2010.019.135

Abstract This paper presents methodologies for fracture analysis of concrete structural components with and without considering tension softening effect. Stress intensity factor (SIF) is computed by using analytical approach and finite element analysis. In the analytical approach, SIF accounting for tension softening effect has been obtained as the difference of SIF obtained using linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) principles and SIF due to closing pressure. Superposition principle has been used by accounting for non-linearity in incremental form. SIF due to crack closing force applied on the effective crack face inside the process zone has been computed using Green's function approach. In… More >
