Contact Problem for the Flat Elliptical Crack under Normally Incident Shear Wave

    A.N. Guz1, O.V. Menshykov1,2, V.V. Zozulya3, I.A. Guz2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.17, No.3, pp. 205-214, 2007, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2007.017.205

Abstract The contact interaction of opposite faces of an elliptical crack is studied for the case of a normal time-harmonic shear wave loading. The distribution of stress intensity factors (shear modes II and III) as functions of the wave number and the friction coefficient is investigated. The results are compared with those obtained for an elliptical crack without allowance for the contact interaction. More >

An Efficient Time-Domain BEM/FEM Coupling for Acoustic-Elastodynamic Interaction Problems

    D. Soares Jr.1, W.J. Mansur1,2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.8, No.2, pp. 153-164, 2005, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2005.008.153

Abstract A coupling procedure is described to perform time-domain numerical analyses of dynamic fluid-structure interaction. The fluid sub-domains, where acoustic waves propagate, are modeled by the Boundary Element Method (BEM), which is quite suitable to deal with linear homogeneous unbounded domain problems. The Finite Element Method (FEM), on the other hand, models the structure sub-domains, adopting a time marching scheme based on implicit Green's functions. The BEM/FEM coupling algorithm here developed is very efficient, eliminating the drawbacks of standard and iterative coupling procedures. Stability and accuracy features are improved by the adoption of different time steps in each sub-domain of the… More >

    V.V. Mykhas’kiv1, O.I. Stepanyuk2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.10, No.1, pp. 45-64, 2005, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2005.010.045

Abstract The 3D elastostatic problem for an infinite remotely loaded matrix containing a finite number of arbitrarily located rigid disk-inclusions and plane cracks is solved by the boundary integral equation (BIE) method. Its boundary integral formulation is achieved by the superposition principle with the subsequent integral representations of superposition terms through surface integrals, which should satisfy the displacement linearity conditions in the inclusion domains and load-free conditions in the crack domains. The subtraction technique in the conjunction with mapping technique under taking into account the structure of the solution at the edges of inhomogeneities is applied for the regularization of BIE… More >

A Boundary Element Method for Acoustic Scattering from Non-axisymmetric and Axisymmetric Elastic Shells

    J. P. Agnantiaris1, D. Polyzos1,2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.4, No.1, pp. 197-212, 2003, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2003.004.197

Abstract A Boundary Element Method (BEM), for the three-dimensional solution of both non-axisymmetric and axisymmetric coupled acoustic-elastic problems in the frequency domain, is presented. The present BEM makes use of the Burton and Miller integral equation for infinite acoustic spaces, while elastic structures are dealt with the standard boundary integral equation of elastodynamics. The axisymmetric formulation involves the use of the fast Fourier transform algorithm. Highly accurate numerical algorithms are used for the evaluation of singular integrals, while nearly singular integrals are treated, also with high accuracy, through the use of practical numerical techniques, for both the axisymmetric and non-axisymmetric cases.… More >

The Influence of Crystal Surfaces on Dislocation Interactions in Mesoscopic Plasticity: A Combined Dislocation Dynamics- Finite Element Approach

    R. Martinez1, N. M. Ghoniem2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.3, No.2, pp. 229-244, 2002, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2002.003.229

Abstract We focus here on the direct coupling of Dislocation Dynamics (DD) computer simulations with the Finite Element Method (FEM) to simulate plastic deformation of micro-scale structures, and investigate the influence of crystal surfaces on dislocation motion. A series of three-dimensional (3-d) DD simulations of BCC single crystals with a single shear loop in the (101)-[111] slip system are first presented. The purpose of these simulations is to explore the relationship between loop force distributions and the proximity of the loop to the crystal boundary. Traction boundary conditions on a single crystal model are satisfied through the superposition of the "image''… More >

Computer Simulation of Fundamental Behaviors of Point Defects, Clusters and Interaction with Dislocations in Fe and Ni

    E. Kuramoto, K. Ohsawa, T. Tsutsumi1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.3, No.2, pp. 193-200, 2002, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2002.003.193

Abstract In order to investigate the interaction of point defects with a dislocation, an interstitial cluster or a SFT (stacking fault tetrahedron), computer simulation has been carried out in model Fe and Ni crystals. The capture zone (the region where the interaction energy is larger than kT) was determined for various interactions. Calculated capture zone for T =500°C for SIAs (crowdion and dumbbell) around a straight edge dislocation is larger than that for a vacancy in both Fe and Ni. Capture zones for Ni are larger than those for Fe, suggesting that Ni (fcc) has a larger dislocation bias factor than… More >

On Finite Element Analysis of Fluid Flows Fully Coupled with Structural Interactions

    S. Rugonyi, K. J. Bathe1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.2, No.2, pp. 195-212, 2001, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2001.002.195

Abstract The solution of fluid flows, modeled using the Navier-Stokes or Euler equations, fully coupled with structures/solids is considered. Simultaneous and partitioned solution procedures, used in the solution of the coupled equations, are briefly discussed, and advantages and disadvantages of their use are mentioned. In addition, a simplified stability analysis of the interface equations is presented, and unconditional stability for certain choices of time integration schemes is shown. Furthermore, the long-term dynamic stability of fluid-structure interaction systems is assessed by the use of Lyapunov characteristic exponents, which allow differentiating between a chaotic and a regular system behavior. Some state-of-the-art numerical solutions… More >

Coupling of BEM/FEM for Time Domain Structural-Acoustic Interaction Problems

    S.T. Lie1, Guoyou Yu, Z. Zhao2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.2, No.2, pp. 171-182, 2001, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2001.002.171

Abstract The BEM/FEM coupling procedure is applied to 2-D time domain structural-acoustic interaction problems. The acoustic domain for fluid or air is modeled by BEM scheme that is suitable for both finite and infinite domains, while the structure is modeled by FEM scheme. The input impact, which can be either plane waves or non-plane waves, can either be forces acting directly on the structural-acoustic system or be explosion sources. The far field or near field explosion sources which are difficult to be simulated by finite element modeling, can be simulated exactly by boundary element modeling as internal sources. In order to… More >

Dynamics of Machinery 2D Elastic Casing, with Central Hole, Subject to an In-Plane Deflection-Dependent Rotating Load

    F. M. A. El-Saeidy1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.1, No.3, pp. 33-42, 2000, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2000.001.335

Abstract In rotating radial ball bearings supported on elastic casings with the bearing outer ring lightly fitted into the housing, the force due to the ball elastic contact is indeed a rotating load rolling over the housing. For accurate estimation of the dynamic deformations of the casing annulus (hole), which in turn affect the bearing tolerances and hence the magnitudes of the generated forces, effect of the load rotation (motion) should be considered. Considering the integral casing and the outer ring to be a plate, an isoparametric plane stress finite-element (FE) based analytical procedure is presented for the dynamic analysis of… More >

    Saber Hamimid1, Messaoud Guellal2

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.12, No.4, pp. 137-153, 2016, DOI:10.32604/fdmp.2016.012.137

Abstract The numerical study of combined thermo-magnetic convection and surface radiation is presented in this paper and computations are performed for a paramagnetic fluid filled square cavity whose four walls have the same emissivity, placed in a micro-gravity environment (g ≈0), and subjected to various strong non-uniform magnetic field gradients. The vertical walls were isothermal, and the horizontal walls were adiabatic. Finite volume method based on the concepts of staggered grid and SIMPLER algorithm has been applied, and the view factors were determined by analytical formula. Representative results, illustrating the effect of magnetic field strength on streamlines, temperature contours and Nusselt… More >
