Abstract Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) includes a group of disorders of the heart and blood vessels and accounts for major morbidity and premature death worldwide. Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease with the gradual destruction of supporting tissues around the teeth, including gingiva, periodontal ligament, alveolar bone, and cementum. Periodontitis has been found to potentially increase the risk of ASCVD. Generally, oral microorganisms and inflammation are the major factors for periodontitis to the incidence of ASCVD. Recently, evidence has shown that the loss of masticatory function is another important factor of periodontitis to the incidence of ASCVD. In this review, we… More > Graphic Abstract

    QIAN ZHANG1,#, MIN ZHEN2,#, PENG LI3, XIAOPEI CHI4,*, YIFEI ZHANG1,*

    BIOCELL, Vol.47, No.2, pp. 431-439, 2023, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2023.024948

Abstract The correlation between microbiota plays a vital role in the progression of periodontal disease. This study investigated the in situ interaction networks between periodontal pathogens in periodontal and peri-implant disease. We used quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction and Pearson’s correlation coefficients to quantify the copy numbers and correlations of four oral core species—Fusobacterium nucleatum, Porphyromonas gingivalis, Prevotella intermedia, and Streptococcus gordonii—from 80 subgingival sites (healthy and with periodontitis or gingivitis) in patients with periodontitis, and 68 subgingival sites (healthy and with periodontitis, gingivitis, peri-implantitis, or peri-implant mucositis) in patients with implants. The highest bacterial counts were observed for Porphyromonas gingivalisMore >

Bacterial endotoxins in periodontal health and diseases

FARIHA NUSRAT1, MOHAMMAD TARIQUR RAHMAN2, MUHAMMAD MANJURUL KARIM3,*

    BIOCELL, Vol.47, No.1, pp. 81-89, 2023, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2023.024635

Abstract Bacterial endotoxins are a major concern in periodontal health and diseases owing to their structure and biological activity. With up-to-date knowledge of endotoxins and the recent findings about the influence of endotoxins in dental health, their probable mode of pathogenesis, and standard detection methods, this review analyzes the potential efficacy and benefits of probiotics in combination with conventional and contemporary treatment measures. In the oral cavity, Gram-negative bacteria are documented to predominate in the pulpal lesions with radiolucent areas and in the root canal with pulp necrosis, where they pose an absolute threat by promoting a series of inflammatory reactions.… More >

BET protein inhibitor apabetalone represses Porphyromonas gingivalis LPS-induced macrophage M1 polarization via regulating miR-130a/STAT3 axis

    MEIHUA CHEN1,2, HUIHUI WANG3, XIAOFENG CHEN1,2, YAN CHEN1,2, TIANYING BIAN1,2,*

    BIOCELL, Vol.46, No.10, pp. 2281-2289, 2022, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2022.020697

Abstract Periodontitis is a frequent chronic inflammatory disorder destroying periodontium. Recent studies have revealed the role of bromodomain and extraterminal domain inhibitor (BETi) and microRNA (miR)-130a in regulating macrophage polarization and pro-inflammatory response. However, little is known about whether apabetalone (a novel BETi) and miR-130a are correlated with chronic inflammatory state in periodontitis by regulating macrophage polarization. Here murine RAW264.7 macrophages were applied as an in vitro inflammatory model. After treatment with Porphyromonas gingivalis-derived lipopolysaccharide (Pg LPS) and apabetalone, the expression of macrophage M1 polarization markers and inflammatory cytokines was assessed using real-time PCR, western blot, and enzyme-linked immuno sorbent assay… More >

Human β-defensin 2 enhances IL-1β production and pyroptosis through P2X7-mediated NLRP3 expression in macrophages

    PANPAN WANG1,2, GANG LI3, LI GAO1,2, CHUANJIANG ZHAO1,2

    BIOCELL, Vol.46, No.5, pp. 1197-1207, 2022, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2022.016607

Abstract Periodontal disease is the leading cause of tooth loss, which is also a high-risk factor for other diseases including oral cancer and cardiovascular disease. Periodontitis is one of the most common type of periodontal diseases. Interleukin-1β (IL-1β) plays a key role in the pathogenesis of periodontitis. However, the mechanism how IL-1β is produced during periodontitis is still unclear. In the present study, we found that human β-defensin 2 (hBD2) enhances IL-1β production through an LPS-primed human acute monocytic leukemia (THP-1) macrophage model. Inhibition of P2X purinoceptor 7 (P2X7) reduced hBD2-enhanced IL-1β production. Incubation of LPS-primed THP-1 macrophages with potassium chloride… More >

    BIOCELL, Vol.35, No.2, pp. 43-50, 2011, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2011.35.043

Abstract MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are short RNA molecules that negatively regulate gene expression primarily by degrading target mRNA or inhibit the translation of protein product. Recently, many reports have shown the altered miRNA expression in various diseases. However, there are no reports on miRNA expression related to periodontitis. Thus, this study aimed to compare the miRNAs differentially expressed in healthy and chronic periodontitis tissues and to determine the miRNAs closely associated with chronic periodontitis. To find out the miRNAs differentially induced in healthy and chronic periodontitis tissues, miRNA microarray was carried out and the expression of miRNAs was confirmed by real-time PCR.… More >
