Chemo-Mechanical Peridynamic Simulation of Dynamic Fracture-Pattern Formation in Lithium-Ion Batteries

    Xiaofei Wang1, Qi Tong1,*

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.27, No.3, pp. 1-1, 2023, DOI:10.32604/icces.2023.09181

Abstract Mechanical failure due to lithium-ion diffusion is one of the main obstacles to fulfill the potential of the electrode materials. Various fracture patterns in different electrode structures are observed in practice, which may have a profound impact on the performance and the service life of electrodes during operation. However, the mechanisms are largely unclear and still lack systematic understanding. Here we propose a coupled chemo-mechanical model based on peridynamics [1] and use it to study the dynamic fracturepattern formation in electrode materials and solid electrolytes during lithiation/delithiation cycles. We found in hollow core-shell nanowires that geometric parameters such as the… More >

Sicheng Zhu, Dingli Liu*, Weijun Liu, Ying Li, Tian Zhou

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.139, No.1, pp. 483-513, 2024, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2023.044809

Abstract In recent years, frequent fire disasters have led to enormous damage in China. Effective firefighting rescues can minimize the losses caused by fires. During the rescue processes, the travel time of fire trucks can be severely affected by traffic conditions, changing the effective coverage of fire stations. However, it is still challenging to determine the effective coverage of fire stations considering dynamic traffic conditions. This paper addresses this issue by combining the traveling time calculation model with the effective coverage simulation model. In addition, it proposes a new index of total effective coverage area (TECA) based on the time-weighted average… More >

Peiheng He, Jiye Zhang*, Lan Zhang, Jiaqi Wang, Yuzhe Ma

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.139, No.1, pp. 937-953, 2024, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2023.043700

Abstract The running stability of high-speed train is largely constrained by the wheel-rail coupling relationship, and the continuous wear between the wheel and rail surfaces will profoundly affect the dynamic performance of the train. In recent years, under the background of increasing train speed, some scientific researchers have proposed a new idea of using the lift force generated by the aerodynamic wings (aero-wing) installed on the roof to reduce the sprung load of the carriage in order to alleviate the wear and tear of the wheel and rail. Based on the bidirectional running characteristics of high-speed train, this paper proposes a… More >

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.139, No.1, pp. 441-458, 2024, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2023.043616

Abstract Sintered silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are widely used in high-power electronics due to their exceptional properties. However, the material reliability is significantly affected by various microscopic defects. In this work, the three primary micro-defect types at potential stress concentrations in sintered AgNPs are identified, categorized, and quantified. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are employed to observe the failure evolution of different microscopic defects. The dominant mechanisms responsible for this evolution are dislocation nucleation and dislocation motion. At the same time, this paper clarifies the quantitative relationship between the tensile strain amount and the failure mechanism transitions of the three defect types by… More >

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.139, No.1, pp. 337-359, 2024, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2023.031496

Abstract When the geological environment of rock masses is disturbed, numerous non-persisting open joints can appear within it. It is crucial to investigate the effect of open joints on the mechanical properties of rock mass. However, it has been challenging to generate realistic open joints in traditional experimental tests and numerical simulations. This paper presents a novel solution to solve the problem. By utilizing the stochastic distribution of joints and an enhanced-fractal interpolation system (IFS) method, rough curves with any orientation can be generated. The Douglas-Peucker algorithm is then applied to simplify these curves by removing unnecessary points while preserving their… More > Graphic Abstract

    Huaiyin He1, Longqing Zou1, Yanchao Li1, Yixuan Wang1, Junxiang Li1, Huan Wen1, Bei Chang1, Lijun Liu2,*

    Energy Engineering, Vol.121, No.1, pp. 111-123, 2024, DOI:10.32604/ee.2023.041010

Abstract Multistage multi-cluster hydraulic fracturing has enabled the economic exploitation of shale reservoirs, but the interpretation of hydraulic fracture parameters is challenging. The pressure signals after pump shutdown are influenced by hydraulic fractures, which can reflect the geometric features of hydraulic fracture. The shutdown pressure can be used to interpret the hydraulic fracture parameters in a real-time and cost-effective manner. In this paper, a mathematical model for shutdown pressure evolution is developed considering the effects of wellbore friction, perforation friction and fluid loss in fractures. An efficient numerical simulation method is established by using the method of characteristics. Based on this… More >

Simulation of Corrosion-Induced Cracking of Reinforced Concrete Based on Fracture Phase Field Method

    Xiaozhou Xia1, Changsheng Qin1, Guangda Lu2, Xin Gu1,*, Qing Zhang1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.138, No.3, pp. 2257-2276, 2024, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2023.031238

Abstract Accurate simulation of the cracking process caused by rust expansion of reinforced concrete (RC) structures plays an intuitive role in revealing the corrosion-induced failure mechanism. Considering the quasi-brittle fracture of concrete, the fracture phase field driven by the compressive-shear term is constructed and added to the traditional brittle fracture phase field model. The rationality of the proposed model is verified by a mixed fracture example under a shear displacement load. Then, the extended fracture phase model is applied to simulate the corrosion-induced cracking process of RC. The cracking patterns caused by non-uniform corrosion expansion are discussed for RC specimens with… More >

Abstract Tunnel construction is susceptible to accidents such as loosening, deformation, collapse, and water inrush, especially under complex geological conditions like dense fault areas. These accidents can cause instability and damage to the tunnel. As a result, it is essential to conduct research on tunnel construction and grouting reinforcement technology in fault fracture zones to address these issues and ensure the safety of tunnel excavation projects. This study utilized the Xianglushan cross-fault tunnel to conduct a comprehensive analysis on the construction, support, and reinforcement of a tunnel crossing a fault fracture zone using the three-dimensional finite element numerical method. The study… More >
