On Multiscale Modeling Using the Generalized Method of Cells: Preserving Energy Dissipation across Disparate Length Scales

    E. J. Pineda1, B. A. Bednarcyk1, A. M. Waas2, S. M. Arnold1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.35, No.2, pp. 119-154, 2013, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2013.035.119

Abstract A mesh objective crack band model was implemented within the generalized method of cells micromechanics theory. This model was linked to a macroscale finite element model to predict post-peak strain softening in composite materials. Although a mesh objective theory was implemented at the microscale, it does not preclude pathological mesh dependence at the macroscale. To ensure mesh objectivity at both scales, the energy density and the energy release rate must be preserved identically across the two scales. This requires a consistent characteristic length or localization limiter. The effects of scaling (or not scaling) the dimensions of the microscale repeating unit… More >

    A. Ataş1, C. Soutis2

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.34, No.3, pp. 199-226, 2013, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2013.034.199

Abstract A strength prediction method is presented for double-lap single fastener bolted joints of cross-ply carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) composite laminates using cohesive zone elements (CZEs). Three-dimensional finite element models were developed and CZEs were inserted into subcritical damage planes identified from X-ray radiographs. The method makes a compromise between the experimental correlation factors (dependant on lay-up, stacking sequence and joint geometry) and three material properties (fracture energy, interlaminar strength and nonlinear shear stress-strain response). Strength of the joints was determined from the predicted load-displacement curves considering sub-laminate and plylevel scaling effects. The predictions are in a reasonable agreement with… More >

A New Optimal Iterative Algorithm for Solving Nonlinear Poisson Problems in Heat Diffusion

    Chih-Wen Chang1,2, Chein-Shan Liu3

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.34, No.2, pp. 143-175, 2013, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2013.034.143

Abstract The nonlinear Poisson problems in heat diffusion governed by elliptic type partial differential equations are solved by a modified globally optimal iterative algorithm (MGOIA). The MGOIA is a purely iterative method for searching the solution vector x without using the invert of the Jacobian matrix D. Moreover, we reveal the weighting parameter αc in the best descent vector w = αcE + DTE and derive the convergence rate and find a criterion of the parameter γ. When utilizing αc and γ, we can further accelerate the convergence speed several times. Several numerical experiments are carefully discussed and validated the proposed… More >

    Bingfei Liu1, Guansuo Dui2,3, Benming Xie1, Libiao Xin3, Lijun Xue3

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.34, No.1, pp. 83-94, 2013, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2013.034.083

Abstract Functionally Graded Materials (FGMs) are being used in an everexpanding set of applications. For better applications, an analytical methodology using averaging technique of composites is developed to describe the thermo-elastic and thermo-elastoplastic behaviors of a three-layered FGM system subjected to thermal loading Solutions using averaging technique of composites for the stress distributions in a generic FGM system subjected to arbitrary temperature loading conditions are presented. The power-law strain hardening behaviour is assumed for the FGM metallic phase and the stress of the metallic phase are calculated to judge the plastic in this work The stress distributions within the FGM systems… More >

    Chih-Ping Wu1,2, Hao-Yuan Li1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.34, No.1, pp. 27-62, 2013, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2013.034.027

Abstract A Reissner's mixed variational theorem (RMVT)-based finite rectangular prism method (FRPM) is developed for the three-dimensional (3D) analysis of sandwich functionally graded material (FGM) plates subjected to mechanical loads, in which the edge conditions of the plates are such that one pair of opposite edges is simply supported and the other pair may be combinations of free, clamped or simply supported edges. The sandwich FGM plate considered consists of two thin and stiff homogeneous material face sheets combined with an embedded thick and soft FGM core, the material properties of which are assumed to obey the powerlaw distributions of the… More >

    C. Wang1, W. Gao1, C.W. Yang1, C.M. Song1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.25, No.1, pp. 19-46, 2011, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2011.025.019

Abstract The random interval response and probabilistic interval reliability of structures with a mixture of random and interval properties are studied in this paper. Structural stiffness matrix is a random interval matrix if some structural parameters and loads are modeled as random variables and the others are considered as interval variables. The perturbation-based stochastic finite element method and random interval moment method are employed to develop the expressions for the mean value and standard deviation of random interval structural displacement and stress responses. The lower bound and upper bound of the mean value and standard deviation of random interval structural responses… More >

Vibration and Buckling of Truss Core Sandwich Plates on An Elastic Foundation Subjected to Biaxial In-plane Loads

    J.W. Chen1, W. Liu1, X.Y. Su1,2

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.24, No.2, pp. 163-182, 2011, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2011.024.163

Abstract Truss-core sandwich plates are thin-walled structures comprising a truss core and two thin flat sheets. Since no direct analytical solution for the dynamic response of such structures exists, the complex three dimensional (3D) systems are idealized as equivalent 2D homogeneous continuous plates. The macroscopic effective bending and transverse shear stiffness are derived. Two representative core topologies are considered: pyramidal truss core and tetrahedral truss core. The first order shear deformation theory is used to study the flexural vibration of a simply supported sandwich plate. The buckling of the truss core plate on an elastic foundation subjected to biaxial in-plane compressive… More >

Modeling of Effective Properties of Multiphase Magnetoelectroelastic Heterogeneous Materials

    A. Bakkali1, L. Azrar1,2, N. Fakri1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.23, No.3, pp. 201-232, 2011, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2011.023.201

Abstract In this paper an N-phase Incremental Self Consistent model is developed for magnetoelectroelastic composites as well as the N-phase Mori-Tanaka and classical Self Consistent. Our aim here is to circumvent the limitation of the Self Consistent predictions for some coupling effective properties at certain inclusion volume fractions. The anomalies of the SC estimates are more drastic when the void inclusions are considered. The mathematical modeling is based on the heterogeneous inclusion problem of Eshelby which leads to an expression for the strain-electric-magnetic field related by integral equations. The effective N-phase magnetoelectroelastic moduli are expressed as a function of magnetoelectroelastic concentration… More >

The Global Nonlinear Galerkin Method for the Solution of von Karman Nonlinear Plate Equations: An Optimal & Faster Iterative Method for the Direct Solution of Nonlinear Algebraic Equations F(x) = 0, using x· = λ[αF + (1 - α)BTF]

    Hong-Hua Dai1,2, Jeom Kee Paik3, S. N. Atluri2

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.23, No.2, pp. 155-186, 2011, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2011.023.155

Abstract The application of the Galerkin method, using global trial functions which satisfy the boundary conditions, to nonlinear partial differential equations such as those in the von Karman nonlinear plate theory, is well-known. Such an approach using trial function expansions involving multiple basis functions, leads to a highly coupled system of nonlinear algebraic equations (NAEs). The derivation of such a system of NAEs and their direct solutions have hitherto been considered to be formidable tasks. Thus, research in the last 40 years has been focused mainly on the use of local trial functions and the Galerkin method, applied to the piecewise… More >

    J.M. Zhu1, X.C. Wang1, D. Wei2, Y.H. Liu2, B.Y. Xu2

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.22, No.3, pp. 261-274, 2011, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2011.022.261

Abstract The residual stiffness of concrete member after fire is a very important parameter of the load-bearing ability and seismic performance of fire-damaged concrete structures. It is also one of the most important criteria for repairing and reinforcing the fire-damaged concrete structures. Based on the equivalent elastic modulus method, improved segment model method and parameter inversion method developed in this paper, the residual stiffness of concrete members exposed to standard fire is calculated and the effects of fire duration, steel ratio and section size on the stiffness are also presented in detail. The results show that these three methods can easily… More >
