Activated Carbon from Nipa Palm Fronds (Nypa fruticans) with H3PO4 and KOH Activators as Fe Adsorbers

    Ninis Hadi Haryanti1,*, Eka Suarso1, Tetti N. Manik1, Suryajaya1, Nurlita Sari1, Darminto2

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.12, No.2, pp. 203-214, 2024, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2023.043549

Abstract Nipa palm is one of the non-wood plants rich in lignocellulosic content. In this study, palm fronds were converted into activated carbon, and their physical, chemical, and morphological properties were characterized. The resulting activated carbon was then applied as an adsorbent of Fe metal in peat water. The carbonization process was carried out for 60 min, followed by sintering at 400°C for 5 h with a particle size of 200 mesh. KOH and H3PO4 were used in the chemical activation process for 24 h. KOH-activated carbon contained 6.13% of moisture, 4.55% of ash, 17.02% of volatile matter, and 78.84% of… More > Graphic Abstract

CFD SIMULATION OF BENZENE ADSORPTION ON PISTACHIO ACTIVATED CARBON POROUS MEDIA

    Maryam Mirzaiea,† , Ali Reza Talebizadeha , Hassan Hashemipoura,b

Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.14, pp. 1-7, 2020, DOI:10.5098/hmt.14.19

Abstract In this work, a combination of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and porous media model was applied to simulate the benzene adsorption on activated carbon and the flow fields in a porous media. The three dimensional unsteady state the gas flow was modeled by using the laminar one phase flow equations in conjunction with the mass transfer equation. The adsorption rate on solid phase was implemented to the model by a user defined source. The model was validated by comparing the simulated breakthrough curves by experimental data. After the validation of the model, the effects of the operating conditions such as… More >

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.11, No.6, pp. 2631-2646, 2023, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2023.027163

Abstract The development and utilization of biomass and agroforestry processing byproducts for high-value applications have been an important topic in the field of renewable materials research. Based on this, a two-step microwave hydrothermal pre-carbonization and KOH activation method was proposed to synthesize tannin-based activated carbons with a high specific surface area, hierarchical pore structure, and good electrochemical performance. The microstructure, texture properties, and physicochemical characteristics were investigated. The results show that the prepared tannin-based activated carbons presented a hierarchical pore structure (micro- and mesopores) with a specific surface area as high as 997.46 m3 g−1 . The electrochemical analysis shows that… More > Graphic Abstract

    Zhiguang Yang1,*, Gaojun Yan1,2, Xueping Liu1, Zhengyuan Feng1, Xinfeng Zhu1, Yanli Mao1, Songtao Chen1, Zhisheng Yu2, Ruimei Fan3, Linlin Shan3,*

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.10, No.12, pp. 3573-3585, 2022, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2022.022031

Abstract Adsorption can be used to recover effectively the volatile organic gases (VOCs) in the exhaust gas from factories through using an appropriate adsorption bed. Due to form a physical or chemical bond, adsorption occurs between the porous solid medium and the liquid or gas multi-component fluid mixture. The regeneration capacity of the adsorbent is as important as the adsorption capacity and it determines the economics of the adsorption system. The regeneration of adsorbent can be realized through changing the pressure or temperature of the system. Here, activated carbon samples from coconut shell were prepared and characterized. Benzene or formaldehyde in… More > Graphic Abstract

    Pongsert Sriprom1, Warawut Krusong2, Pornsawan Assawasaengrat3,*

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.9, No.2, pp. 311-324, 2021, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2021.012560

Abstract Durian rind wastes are an important raw material for activated carbon production due to their renewable sources and low-cost materials. The efficiency of increasing surface area and the quantity of oxygen groups on the surface of activated carbon were studied for the preparation of activated carbon. The preparation of activated carbon has been studied with the different methods as follows: activation by acid, activation by base, hydrothermal and activation by acid, and hydrothermal and activation by base. The results showed that hydrothermal and activation by acid had high iodine number which was chosen to determine the optimum condition for activated… More >

Comparative Study on Dry Reforming of Methane Over Co-M (M=Ce, Fe, Zr) Catalysts Supported on N-Doped Activated Carbon

    Yinghui Sun1, Guojie Zhang1,2,*

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.22, No.1, pp. 105-105, 2019, DOI:10.32604/icces.2019.05173

Abstract A series of Co-M (M = Ce, Fe, Zr) binary oxides supported on N-doped catalysts were prepared by impregnation methods and tested for DRM reaction. Moreover, the influence of Co and Ce atomic contents in the catalysts on DRM performance was investigated. Significant enhancement of activity performance over Ce promoted 3Co-1Ce/AC-N catalyst was observed. Compared with Fe and Zr, the catalyst with 1/4 mol% of Ce showed the highest activity and was higher than the supported Co catalyst. The calcined and spent catalysts were characterized by XPS, H2-TPR, TEM and EDX mapping studies. The characterization results demonstrated that the improved… More >

    Xiaoyi Liang1, Zhen Yang1,2, Xingsheng Gu3, Licheng Ling1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.13, No.2, pp. 135-152, 2009, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2009.013.135

Abstract Supercapacitors, also called electrical double-layer capacitors (EDLCs), occupy a region between batteries and dielectric capacitors on the Ragone plot describing the relation between energy and power. BET specific surface area and specific capacitance are two important electrochemical property parameters for activated carbon EDLCs, which are usually tested by experimental method. However, it is misspent time to repeat lots of experiments for EDLCs' studies. In this investigation, we developed one theoretical model based on improved particle swarm optimization algorithm back propagation (PSO-BP) neural network (NN) to simulate and optimize BET specific surface area and specific capacitance. Comparative studies between the predicted… More >
