Abstract Nowadays, the production of consumer goods is based on the use of non-renewable raw materials, which in recent years has been performing as a problem for the environment. Considering the large number of available biofibers in nature, their use in the development of polymeric composites has inevitably emerged, it is also necessary to take into account the countless discarded plastics that still have the potential to be reused. In this work, fibers were extracted from pineapple crown residues and utilized to compose sustainable composites using recycled polypropylene from cups discarded in the trash as a matrix. However, it is known… More >

    ZONG-YUN LI1,2*, MEI-LI FU1, FANG-FANG HU1, SHU-FENG HUANG1, YUN-CHUN SONG2

    BIOCELL, Vol.30, No.1, pp. 27-32, 2006, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2006.30.027

Abstract The ribosomal DNA (45S rDNA) behaviors during the cell cycle were analyzed on interphase nuclei, prophases, metaphases, pachytene chromosomes and extended DNA fibers in rice (Oryza, sativa ssp.indica cv.Guangluai No.4) by using high-resolution fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH). The results show that 45S rDNA is located at the ends of short arms of chromosomes 9 and 10. But the signals are much more intense on chromosome 9 than on chromosome 10 in metaphase. Pachytene chromosome has rDNA signal arrays on chromosome 9. Different phases are described and discussed. These results indicate that the activity of rDNA at individual loci may also… More >

    BIOCELL, Vol.41, No.2-3, pp. 67-73, 2017, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2017.41.067

Abstract Current investigation has shown that human exposure to aflatoxins is not limited to the administration of contaminated cereals, but water is another possible source. This study was aimed to design easily applicable method to eliminate aflatoxin B2 (AFB2) from contaminated drinking water. Electrospinning has been used for preparation of probiotic-coated polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and cellulose acetate (CA) nanofibers. Both of these hybrid nanofibers were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). SEM showed the proper coating of probiotic strains (Kluyveromyces lactis CBS 2359 and Saccharomyces cerevisiae ATCC 9763) on both nanofiber types. Different areas (1-5 cm2)… More >

Lightweight Biobased Polyurethane Nanocomposite Foams Reinforced with Pineapple Leaf Nanofibers (PLNFs)

    Xiaojian Zhou1,2, Hui Wang1, Jun Zhang2, Zhifeng Zheng1, Guanben Du1,2,*

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.6, No.1, pp. 68-74, 2018, DOI:10.7569/JRM.2017.634150

Abstract Pineapple leaf nanofibers (PLNFs) extracted from pineapple leaf fiber were used for reinforcing biobased polyurethane foam (BPU). The dispersion performance of PLNF in the foaming mixture system, nanocomposite foaming behavior, cell morphology, cell size, density, compressive strength and dimensional stability were investigated. The viscosity of the mixtures increased with increasing the PLNF content. The addition of a tiny amount of PLNF did not influence the exothermic temperature of the foam system, but reduced the expansion and gel time of the nanocomposite foams. This reduced time was found to increase the production efficiency. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images showed that the… More >

    J.T. Verbis1, S.V. Tsinopoulos2, D. Polyzos2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.3, No.6, pp. 803-814, 2002, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2002.003.803

Abstract In the present work the iterative effective medium approximation (IEMA) is appropriately used for wave dispersion and attenuation predictions in fiber-reinforced composites that microscopically exhibit a non-uniform fiber distribution. Two types of composites with such irregular topology of fibers are considered. The first contains a regular distribution of clusters of fibers embedded in a composite matrix with uniformly distributed fibers, and the second a uniform distribution of matrix-rich inclusions embedded in a fiber-rich regular composite medium. The resulting from the application of the IEMA scattering problems are solved numerically by means of a two dimensional boundary element method. The obtained… More >
