Deep Learning Applied to Computational Mechanics: A Comprehensive Review, State of the Art, and the Classics

    Loc Vu-Quoc1,*, Alexander Humer2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.137, No.2, pp. 1069-1343, 2023, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2023.028130

Abstract Three recent breakthroughs due to AI in arts and science serve as motivation: An award winning digital image, protein folding, fast matrix multiplication. Many recent developments in artificial neural networks, particularly deep learning (DL), applied and relevant to computational mechanics (solid, fluids, finite-element technology) are reviewed in detail. Both hybrid and pure machine learning (ML) methods are discussed. Hybrid methods combine traditional PDE discretizations with ML methods either (1) to help model complex nonlinear constitutive relations, (2) to nonlinearly reduce the model order for efficient simulation (turbulence), or (3) to accelerate the simulation by predicting certain components in the traditional… More >

    Amthal Hakim1, Wael Slika1,*, Rawan Machmouchi1, Adel Elkordi2

    Structural Durability & Health Monitoring, Vol.17, No.3, pp. 175-194, 2023, DOI:10.32604/sdhm.2022.023027

Abstract Corrosion of reinforcing steel in concrete elements causes minor to major damage in different aspects. It may lead to spalling of concrete cover, reduction of section’s capacity and can alter the dynamic properties. For the dynamic properties, natural frequency is to be a reliable indicator of structural integrity that can be utilized in non-destructive corrosion assessment. Although the correlation between natural frequency and corrosion damage has been reflected in different experimental programs, few attempts have been made to investigate this relationship in forward modeling and/or structural health monitoring techniques. This can be attributed to the limited available data, the complex… More >

    Turki M. Alanazi*

    Intelligent Automation & Soft Computing, Vol.37, No.2, pp. 1553-1568, 2023, DOI:10.32604/iasc.2023.039686

Abstract Image processing is becoming more popular because images are being used increasingly in medical diagnosis, biometric monitoring, and character recognition. But these images are frequently contaminated with noise, which can corrupt subsequent image processing stages. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a novel nonlinear filter for removing “salt and pepper” impulsive noise from a complex color image. The new filter is called the Modified Vector Directional Filter (MVDF). The suggested method is based on the traditional Vector Directional Filter (VDF). However, before the candidate pixel is processed by the VDF, the MVDF employs a threshold and the neighboring pixels of… More >

    Intelligent Automation & Soft Computing, Vol.37, No.2, pp. 2441-2457, 2023, DOI:10.32604/iasc.2023.037778

Abstract Grid-connected reactive-load compensation and harmonic control are becoming a central topic as photovoltaic (PV) grid-connected systems diversified. This research aims to produce a high-performance inverter with a fast dynamic response for accurate reference tracking and a low total harmonic distortion (THD) even under nonlinear load applications by improving its control scheme. The proposed system is expected to operate in both stand-alone mode and grid-connected mode. In stand-alone mode, the proposed controller supplies power to critical loads, alternatively during grid-connected mode provide excess energy to the utility. A modified variable step incremental conductance (VS-InCond) algorithm is designed to extract maximum power… More >

NUMERICAL STUDY OF PERIODICALLY FULLY-DEVELOPED FLOW AND HEAT TRANSFER IN CHANNELS WITH PERIODIC SEMICIRCULAR TUBE

Weiyu Zhanga , Mo Yanga,*, Yuwen Zhangb

Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.12, pp. 1-8, 2019, DOI:10.5098/hmt.12.18

Abstract The periodically fully-developed flow and heat transfer in channels with periodic semi-circular tube is studied numerically by the direct numerical simulation (DNS), the large eddy simulation (LES), and the Reynolds stress model (RSM). When the Reynolds number is between 3000 and 25000, the Nusselt number obtained by the RSM is closer to the experimental results than the results obtained from other turbulence models. The nonlinear characteristics of flow and heat transfer is revealed based on the results of numerical simulation. When Reynolds number is high, the geometric structure and boundary conditions of the channel are symmetric, but the flow field… More >

Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.13, pp. 1-8, 2019, DOI:10.5098/hmt.13.11

Abstract Thermalsolutal convection induced by mass and heat source in horizontal cavity is investigated numerically based on SIMPLE algorithm with QUICK scheme. The high-concentration heat source is placed in the square cavity, and the cavity wall is low temperature and low concentration. The smoke is used as the diffusion medium, and the flow field, temperature and concentration of the fluid under different Rayleigh number, buoyancy ratio Nc, Soret numbers and Dufour numbers are analyzed systematically. Parameter study demonstrates that heat and mass transfer of thermosolutal convection are enhanced with increasing Rayleigh number or buoyancy ratio, and the couple-diffusive interaction has a… More >

    Muhammad Sajjad1,*, Tariq Shah1, Robinson Julian Serna2

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.75, No.3, pp. 5287-5305, 2023, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2023.035347

Abstract In block ciphers, the nonlinear components, also known as substitution boxes (S-boxes), are used with the purpose of inducing confusion in cryptosystems. For the last decade, most of the work on designing S-boxes over the points of elliptic curves has been published. The main purpose of these studies is to hide data and improve the security levels of crypto algorithms. In this work, we design pair of nonlinear components of a block cipher over the residue class of Gaussian integers (GI). The fascinating features of this structure provide S-boxes pair at a time by fixing three parameters. But the prime… More >
