    Shihao Tian1,2, Quanzi Yuan1,2,*

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.27, No.4, pp. 1-1, 2023, DOI:10.32604/icces.2023.09327

Abstract When one soluble fiber is partially merged into liquid, a meniscus forms and the fiber can be dissolved into one pinpoint with curvature. This process has been used in the manufacture of sophisticated pinpoints. However, it is hard to observe the dissolution process in the laboratory and the dissolution mechanisms are still far from being well understood in the nanoscale. Here we utilize molecular dynamics simulations to study the dissolution process of one meniscus-adhered nanofiber. We find that the tip’s curvature radius decreases and then increases, reaching the maximum in the middle state. This state is defined as the “Sh… More >

    Jiaqun Wang1,2, Guanxu Pan2, Youhe Zhou2, Xiaojing Liu2,*

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.139, No.1, pp. 297-318, 2024, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2023.030622

Abstract In this study, a wavelet multi-resolution interpolation Galerkin method (WMIGM) is proposed to solve linear singularly perturbed boundary value problems. Unlike conventional wavelet schemes, the proposed algorithm can be readily extended to special node generation techniques, such as the Shishkin node. Such a wavelet method allows a high degree of local refinement of the nodal distribution to efficiently capture localized steep gradients. All the shape functions possess the Kronecker delta property, making the imposition of boundary conditions as easy as that in the finite element method. Four numerical examples are studied to demonstrate the validity and accuracy of the proposed… More >

Asymmetric Loss Based on Image Properties for Deep Learning-Based Image Restoration

Linlin Zhu, Yu Han, Xiaoqi Xi, Zhicun Zhang, Mengnan Liu, Lei Li, Siyu Tan, Bin Yan*

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.77, No.3, pp. 3367-3386, 2023, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2023.045878

Abstract Deep learning techniques have significantly improved image restoration tasks in recent years. As a crucial component of deep learning, the loss function plays a key role in network optimization and performance enhancement. However, the currently prevalent loss functions assign equal weight to each pixel point during loss calculation, which hampers the ability to reflect the roles of different pixel points and fails to exploit the image’s characteristics fully. To address this issue, this study proposes an asymmetric loss function based on the image and data characteristics of the image recovery task. This novel loss function can adjust the weight of… More >

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.138, No.3, pp. 2239-2255, 2024, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2023.030677

Abstract Human pose estimation aims to localize the body joints from image or video data. With the development of deep learning, pose estimation has become a hot research topic in the field of computer vision. In recent years, human pose estimation has achieved great success in multiple fields such as animation and sports. However, to obtain accurate positioning results, existing methods may suffer from large model sizes, a high number of parameters, and increased complexity, leading to high computing costs. In this paper, we propose a new lightweight feature encoder to construct a high-resolution network that reduces the number of parameters… More >

INVESTIGATION OF PARTICULAR FEATURES OF THE NUMERICAL SOLUTION OF AN EVAPORATING THIN FILM IN A CHANNEL

Greg Ball, John Polansky, Tarik Kaya*

    Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.4, No.1, pp. 1-9, 2013, DOI:10.5098/hmt.v4.1.3002

Abstract The fluid flow and heat transfer in an evaporating extended meniscus are numerically studied. Continuity, momentum, energy equations and the Kelvin-Clapeyron model are used to develop a third order, non-linear ordinary differential equation which governs the evaporating thin film. It is shown that the numerical results strongly depend on the choice of the accommodation coefficient and Hamaker constant as well as the initial perturbations. Therefore, in the absence of experimentally verified values, the numerical solutions should be considered as qualitative at best. It is found that the numerical results produce negative liquid pressures under certain specific conditions. This result may… More >

Xinshan Zhuang*, Shunlei Xia, Ruijie Pan

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.20, No.2, pp. 447-461, 2024, DOI:10.32604/fdmp.2023.042220

Abstract Clay, as the most common soil used for foundation fill, is widely used in various infrastructure projects. The physical and mechanical properties of clay are influenced by the pore solution environment. This study uses a GDS static/dynamic triaxial apparatus and nuclear magnetic resonance experiments to investigate the effects of cyclic loading on clay foundations. Moreover, the development of cumulative strain in clay is analyzed, and a fitting model for cumulative plastic strain is introduced by considering factors such as NaCl solution concentration, consolidation stress ratio, and cycle number. In particular, the effects of the NaCl solution concentration and consolidation stress… More >

ACCELERATING MHD FLOW OF A GENERALIZED OLDROYD-B FLUID WITH FRACTIONAL DERIVATIVE

    Yaqing Liua,*, Jinyu Mab

Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.6, pp. 1-5, 2015, DOI:10.5098/hmt.6.17

Abstract This paper presents an exact solution for the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flow of an incompressible generalized Oldroyd-B fluid due to an infinite accelerating plate. The fractional calculus approach is introduced to establish the constitutive relationship of the Oldroyd-B fluid. The solutions in terms of Fox H-function are obtained by using the Laplace transform. When N = 0 the solutions corresponds to the generalized Oldroyd-B fluids, while θ → 0 and λ → 0 describes the Maxwell fluid and the generalized second fluid, as limiting cases of our general results, respectively. DUAL SOLUTIONS FOR HEAT AND MASS TRANSFER IN MHD JEFFREY FLUID IN THE PRESENCE OF HOMOGENEOUSHETEROGENEOUS REACTIONS

    C. S. K. Rajua , N. Sandeepa, J. Prakashb,1

Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.7, pp. 1-8, 2016, DOI:10.5098/hmt.7.14

Abstract In this study, we analyzed the effects of nonlinear thermal radiation and induced magnetic field on steady two-dimensional incompressible flow of Jeffrey fluid flow past a stretching/shrinking surface in the presence of homogeneous-heterogeneous reactions. For physical relevance in this study we analyzed the behavior of homogeneous and heterogeneous profiles individually. The transformed governing equations with the help of similarity variables are solved numerically via Runge-Kutta and Newton’s method. We obtained better accuracy of the present results by differentiating with the existed published literature. The effect of pertinent parameters on velocity, induced magnetic field, temperature and concentration profiles along with the… More >

EFFECT OF SPACESHIP ORBITAL TRANSFER ON SOLUTION CONVECTION DURING PROTEIN CRYSTAL GROWTH UNDER MICROGRAVITY

    Kun Zhang*, Liang Bi Wang

Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.7, pp. 1-7, 2016, DOI:10.5098/hmt.7.18

Abstract Detailed numerical analysis is presented for the effect of spaceship orbital transfer on solution convection during protein crystal growth under microgravity. The results show that the flow and mass transfer during protein crystal growth are unsteady in the process of orbital transfer. For the case of quasi-steady acceleration, the flow is so weak that the effect of flow on concentration field can be negligible. For the case of position adjustment, the convection is enhanced with protein crystal diameter dc > 0.2 mm and slightly alters the purely diffusive concentration distribution under zero gravity condition. For the case of motor working,… More >
