    Wei Huang, Jun Shi, R. T. Yen†,‡

    Molecular & Cellular Biomechanics, Vol.9, No.4, pp. 269-284, 2012, DOI:10.3970/mcb.2012.009.269

Abstract The objective of our study was to develop a computing program for computing the transit time frequency distributions of red blood cell in human pulmonary circulation, based on our anatomic and elasticity data of blood vessels in human lung. A stochastic simulation model was introduced to simulate blood flow in human pulmonary circulation. In the stochastic simulation model, the connectivity data of pulmonary blood vessels in human lung was converted into a probability matrix. Based on this model, the transit time of red blood cell in human pulmonary circulation and the output blood pressure were studied. Additionally, the stochastic simulation… More >

Mesoscopic Biochemical Basis of Isogenetic Inheritance and Canalization: Stochasticity, Nonlinearity, and Emergent Landscape

    Hong Qian, Hao Ge

    Molecular & Cellular Biomechanics, Vol.9, No.1, pp. 1-30, 2012, DOI:10.3970/mcb.2012.009.001

Abstract Biochemical reaction systems in mesoscopic volume, under sustained environmental chemical gradient(s), can have multiple stochastic attractors. Two distinct mechanisms are known for their origins: (a) Stochastic single-molecule events, such as gene expression, with slow gene on-off dynamics; and (b) nonlinear networks with feedbacks. These two mechanisms yield different volume dependence for the sojourn time of an attractor. As in the classic Arrhenius theory for temperature dependent transition rates, a landscape perspective provides a natural framework for the system's behavior. However, due to the nonequilibrium nature of the open chemical systems, the landscape, and the attractors it represents, are all themselves… More >

Viscoelasticity of Living Materials: Mechanics and Chemistry of Muscle as an Active Macromolecular System

    Hong Qian*

    Molecular & Cellular Biomechanics, Vol.5, No.2, pp. 107-118, 2008, DOI:10.3970/mcb.2008.005.107

Abstract At the molecular and cellular level, mechanics and chemistry are two aspects of the same macromolecular system. We present a bottom-up approach to such systems based on Kramers' diffusion theory of chemical reactions, the theory of polymer dynamics, and the recently developed models for molecular motors. Using muscle as an example, we develop a viscoelastic theory of muscle in terms of an simple equation for single motor protein movement. Both A.V. Hill's contractile component and A.F. Huxley's equation of sliding-filament motion are shown to be special cases of the general viscoelastic theory of the active material. Some disparity between the… More >

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.59, No.3, pp. 787-804, 2019, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2019.04655

Abstract In this paper, a reliable stochastic numerical analysis for typhoid fever incorporating with protection against infection has been considered. We have compared the solutions of stochastic and deterministic typhoid fever model. It has been shown that the stochastic typhoid fever model is more realistic as compared to the deterministic typhoid fever model. The effect of threshold number T* hold in stochastic typhoid fever model. The proposed framework of the stochastic non-standard finite difference scheme (SNSFD) preserves all dynamical properties like positivity, bounded-ness and dynamical consistency defined by Mickens, R. E. The stochastic numerical simulation of the model showed that increase… More >

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.2, No.2, pp. 85-96, 2005, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2005.002.085

Abstract In this paper the optimization of groundwater pumping in coastal aquifers under the threat of saltwater intrusion is investigated. The aquifer is inhomogeneous and contains several hydraulic conductivities zones. The aquifer data such as the hydraulic conductivities are uncertain, but with their expected mean and standard deviation values given. A stochastic boundary element method based on the perturbation technique is employed as the simulation tool. The stochastic optimization is handled by the chance-constrained programming. Genetic algorithm is selected as the optimization tool. Numerical examples of deterministic and stochastic problems are provided to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed schemes. More >

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.56, No.3, pp. 381-399, 2018, DOI: 10.3970/cmc.2018.03787

Abstract Network security situation awareness is an important foundation for network security management, which presents the target system security status by analyzing existing or potential cyber threats in the target system. In network offense and defense, the network security state of the target system will be affected by both offensive and defensive strategies. According to this feature, this paper proposes a network security situation awareness method using stochastic game in cloud computing environment, uses the utility of both sides of the game to quantify the network security situation value. This method analyzes the nodes based on the network security state of… More >

Abstract This writing is an attempt to explain a reliable numerical treatment for stochastic computer virus model. We are comparing the solutions of stochastic and deterministic computer virus models. This paper reveals that a stochastic computer virus paradigm is pragmatic in contrast to the deterministic computer virus model. Outcomes of threshold number C hold in stochastic computer virus model. If C < 1 then in such a condition virus controlled in the computer population while C > 1 shows virus persists in the computer population. Unfortunately, stochastic numerical methods fail to cope with large step sizes of time. The suggested structure… More >

Simulation of Stochastic Ice Force Process of Vertical Offshore Structure Based on Spectral Model

    Tianyu Wu1, Wenliang Qiu1,*

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.115, No.1, pp. 47-66, 2018, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2018.115.047

Abstract The action of drifting ice floes may induce strong vibrations of offshore structures, and further reduce the structural safety and serviceability. The aim of this paper is to develop a method by considering ice crushing as a stochastic process. On the basis of ice force spectrum which considers the time and spatial correlation between the local ice forces, a simulation methodology to generate the stochastic ice forces process of vertical offshore structure is proposed. The crucial segment in the simulation is to accurately calculate the effective ice pressure, and it is accomplished by an empirical formula which can provide a… More >

Least Squares Stochastic Finite Element Method in Structural Stability Analysis of Steel Skeletal Structures1

    Marcin Kamiński2, Jacek Szafran3

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.107, No.1, pp. 27-57, 2015, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2015.107.027

Abstract Basic probabilistic characteristics and reliability indices of critical forces for high steel skeletal towers are numerically modeled by using the Stochastic, perturbation-based Finite Element Method. It is implemented together with the Weighted Least Squares Method and compared with the Monte-Carlo simulation as well as with the semi-analytical Probabilistic FEM. The Finite Element Method solution to the stability problem for a full 3D model of a tower accounts for both first and second order effects known from the engineering codes as the so-called P-delta effect. Two different Gaussian input random variables are adopted here – Young modulus of steel as well… More >

    Xu Yong1,2, Feng Jing1, Xu Wei1, Gu Rencai1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.106, No.5, pp. 309-322, 2015, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2015.106.309

Abstract In this paper, bifurcation analysis and numerical simulations are performed on the FitzHugh-Nagumo system in the presence of Lévy stable noise. The stationary probability density functions are obtained to examine the influences of noise intensity and stability index. Results show that under the influences of noise intensity and stability index, the dynamic of the FitzHugh-Nagumo model can be well characterized through the concept of stochastic bifurcation, consisting in qualitative changes of the stationary probability distribution. Then, the mean passage time between the resting and action state is investigated as functions of noise intensity and stability index of the external signal… More >
