Summary

Polymer matrix composites (PMCs) have been widely used in aerospace, automotive industries and other fields, owing to their advantages such as light weight, high specific strength and high designability. As deep-space exploration, deep-sea exploration and other related fields impose increasingly stringent requirements for lightweight construction, intelligence, and structure–function integration of materials, further advancing fundamental scientific research and applied technology development of PMCs will facilitate their innovative application and advancement in high-end equipment sectors. This special issue aims to gather the latest original achievements from both domestic and international researchers in the fields of structure–function integrated design, functional modification, advanced manufacturing and engineering applications of PMCs, thereby providing theoretical support and technical reserves for the development of composite systems.

The topics covered in this special issue on polymer matrix composites: Structures, Functions, and Applications include, but are not limited to:
1. Strength design and theories of PMCs
2. Multiscale mechanics of PMCs
3. Design and applications of PMCs
4. AI-driven design of PMCs
5. Advanced manufacturing of PMCs
6. Non-destructive testing of PMCs
7. Performance tailoring of PMCs
