Summary

Polymeric biomaterials have rapidly evolved into a central pillar of modern materials science, offering unprecedented versatility and impact across multiple domains. Their unique ability to combine structural adaptability, biocompatibility, and functional tunability has positioned them as key enablers in advancing both fundamental research and practical applications. In recent years, innovations in biodegradable polymers have opened pathways toward sustainable solutions, reducing reliance on conventional plastics while supporting eco-friendly biomedical and industrial uses. The development of smart polymers, capable of responding to stimuli such as temperature, pH, or light, has further expanded the scope of biomaterials, enabling dynamic systems for controlled release, adaptive coatings, and responsive devices. At the same time, nanostructured biomaterials and advanced composites are driving progress in diagnostics, sensors, and high-performance engineering applications, bridging the gap between biology and technology. The integration of polymeric biomaterials into cutting-edge fabrication methods, including 3D printing and microfluidics, is reshaping the landscape of manufacturing, allowing for precise customization and scalability. Collectively, these advances underscore the transformative role of polymeric biomaterials in addressing global challenges, from healthcare and environmental sustainability to industrial innovation, and highlight their potential to redefine the future of science and technology.

This special issue, Advances in Polymeric Biomaterials, will explore three major themes but not limited to:
(1) Biomedical and healthcare applications, where polymers are being engineered into biodegradable scaffolds for tissue engineering, smart hydrogels for drug delivery, and advanced coatings for implants, prosthetics, and bioelectronics.
(2) Environmental and sustainable biomaterials, emphasizing the role of bio-based and biodegradable polymers in reducing plastic waste, developing renewable alternatives, and creating polymeric membranes for water purification and environmental remediation.
(3) Industrial and technological innovations, showcasing polymer composites for aerospace and automotive industries, nanostructured biomaterials for sensors and diagnostics, and stimuli-responsive polymers integrated into advanced manufacturing techniques.
