Summary
The special issue on "Biopolymer-Based Sustainable Packaging and Functional Composite Polymers " attempts to discuss the significant developments and breakthroughs research work in the creation and use of biopolymer-based sustainable and functional smart composite in packaging. There is an increasing demands for sustainable alternatives that can lessen the environmental impact of non-biodegradable plastics as worries about plastic waste in the environment continue to rise. The most current developments in biodegradable and sustainable polymer research and development will be highlighted in this special issue, with an emphasis on how they might supplant traditional plastic derived from fossil fuels and improve the sustainability of the food industry.
Research on the development and characterization of novel, sustainable, and biodegradable polymer-based packaging is crucial. Functional additions, such as active chemicals (natural color, bioactive substances, nanofillers, etc.), are required to accomplish this. Food preservation applications are interested in studying the functional (antioxidant, anti-UV light, and antimicrobial) and physical (mechanical, optical, thermal, and barrier qualities) characteristics of these smart composite materials, as well as their environmental impact and biodegradability. Improving biodegradable polymers' functional characteristics to meet customer demands through innovation will provide significant new insights into their practical applications, particularly for processed and fresh packed food products.
Drawing attention to the challenges and opportunities associated with the biodegradable and sustainable polymer-based composite in smart packaging is the main objective of this special issue. A comprehensive understanding of the environmental benefits of biodegradable polymers will be provided by research on biodegradable composites, nanocomposites, and sustainability metrics in comparison to conventional plastics. By combining state-of-the-art research with practical applications in the food industry, this special issue aims to advance the field of biopolymers-based composites and ultimately contribute to a more sustainable future.
