PP-GAN: Style Transfer from Korean Portraits to ID Photos Using Landmark Extractor with GAN

    Jongwook Si1, Sungyoung Kim2,*

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.77, No.3, pp. 3119-3138, 2023, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2023.043797

Abstract The objective of style transfer is to maintain the content of an image while transferring the style of another image. However, conventional methods face challenges in preserving facial features, especially in Korean portraits where elements like the “Gat” (a traditional Korean hat) are prevalent. This paper proposes a deep learning network designed to perform style transfer that includes the “Gat” while preserving the identity of the face. Unlike traditional style transfer techniques, the proposed method aims to preserve the texture, attire, and the “Gat” in the style image by employing image sharpening and face landmark, with the GAN. The color,… More >

    Abstract

The utilization of aquaculture wastewater as irrigation is an effective way to recycle and reuse water and nitrogen fertilizer resources because it contains numerous nutrients. However, it is still unclear that the pattern of substituting aquaculture wastewater irrigation for fertilizer supplementing is conducive to improving the soil nitrogen status, fruit yield and water-fertilizer use efficiency for tomato production. In this context, the experiment was intended to establish the appropriate irrigation regime of aquaculture wastewater in tomato production for freshwater replacement and fertilizer reduction to ensure good yields. Pot experiments were conducted with treatments as farmers accustomed to irrigation and fertilization… More >

Huiqin Li, Mingzhi Zhang*, Na Xiao, Haijian Yang

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.92, No.12, pp. 3211-3236, 2023, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2023.031003

Abstract To determine suitable thresholds for deficit irrigation of winter wheat in the well-irrigated area of the Huang-Huai-Hai Plain, we investigated the effects of different deficit irrigation lower limits and quotas on the photosynthetic characteristics and grain yield of winter wheat. Four irrigation lower limits were set for initiating irrigation (i.e., light drought (LD, 50%, 55%, 60% and 50% of field holding capacity (FC) at the seedling-regreening, jointing, heading and filling-ripening stages, respectively), medium drought (MD, 40%, 50%, 55% and 45% of FC at the same stages, respectively), adequate moisture (CK1, 60%, 65%, 70% and 60% of FC at the same… More >

Abstract Upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) is the most important plant producing natural fibers for the textile industry. In this study, we first investigated the phenotypic variation of seven agronomic traits of 273 diverse cotton accessions in the years 2017 and 2018, which were from 18 geographical regions. We found large variations among the traits in different geographical regions and only half of the traits in either years 2017 or 2018 followed a normal distribution. We then genotyped the collection with 81,612 high quality SNPs. Phylogenetic tree and population structure revealed a diverse genetic structure of the core collection, and geographical diversification… More >

    BIOCELL, Vol.47, No.12, pp. 2697-2708, 2023, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2023.044314

Abstract Background: This study aimed to explore the expression, function, and molecular mechanism of ANXA8, the gene for annexin 8, in cervical cancer. Methods: The gene expression of the ANX family members in cervical cancer tissues was classified via The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database. The expression of ANXA8 in paracancerous tissues, cervical cancer tissues, and cell lines was identified by fluorescence quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and immunohistochemistry. The effects of ANXA8 knockdown on the cellular growth and cell invasion of cervical cancer were examined by MTT, clone-formation assay, scratch test, and Transwell assay. The effect of ANXA8 knockdown on… More >

Abstract Background: Glioma is the most common primary brain tumor. Exploration of new tumorigenesis mechanism of glioma is critical to determine more effective treatment targets as well as to develop effective prognosis methods that can enhance the treatment efficacy. We previously demonstrated that the deubiquitinase biquitin carboxyl-terminal hydrolase L5 (UCHL5) was downregulated in human glioma. However, the effect and mechanism of UCHL5 on the proliferation of glioma cells remains unknown. Methods: Transfection of siRNA was used to knockdown the expression of UCHL5 in U251 cells. The 3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5 diphenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay, Edu assay, and colony formation assay were employed to… More > Graphic Abstract

Abstract In this paper, given the shortcomings of jellyfish search algorithm with low search ability in the early stage and easy to fall into local optimal solution, this paper introduces adaptive weight function and elite strategy, improving the global search scope in the early stage and the ability to refine the local development in the later stage. In the numerical study, the benchmark problem of dimensional optimization with a 10-bar truss structure and simultaneous dimensional shape optimization with a 15-bar truss structure is adopted, and the corresponding penalty method is used for constraint treatment. The test results show that the improved… More > Graphic Abstract

Abstract Intelligent traffic control requires accurate estimation of the road states and incorporation of adaptive or dynamically adjusted intelligent algorithms for making the decision. In this article, these issues are handled by proposing a novel framework for traffic control using vehicular communications and Internet of Things data. The framework integrates Kalman filtering and Q-learning. Unlike smoothing Kalman filtering, our data fusion Kalman filter incorporates a process-aware model which makes it superior in terms of the prediction error. Unlike traditional Q-learning, our Q-learning algorithm enables adaptive state quantization by changing the threshold of separating low traffic from high traffic on the road… More >

Automated Video Generation of Moving Digits from Text Using Deep Deconvolutional Generative Adversarial Network

    Anwar Ullah1, Xinguo Yu1,*, Muhammad Numan2

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.77, No.2, pp. 2359-2383, 2023, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2023.041219

Abstract Generating realistic and synthetic video from text is a highly challenging task due to the multitude of issues involved, including digit deformation, noise interference between frames, blurred output, and the need for temporal coherence across frames. In this paper, we propose a novel approach for generating coherent videos of moving digits from textual input using a Deep Deconvolutional Generative Adversarial Network (DD-GAN). The DD-GAN comprises a Deep Deconvolutional Neural Network (DDNN) as a Generator (G) and a modified Deep Convolutional Neural Network (DCNN) as a Discriminator (D) to ensure temporal coherence between adjacent frames. The proposed research involves several steps.… More >

    BIOCELL, Vol.47, No.11, pp. 2503-2516, 2023, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2023.031565

Abstract Background: Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) has a poor prognosis with a low 5-year survival rate. Lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) accounts for 50%. Facio-genital dysplasia-5 (FGD5), a member of a subfamily of Rho GTP-GDP exchange factors, may be a good molecular biomarker for diagnosis and prognosis. Objective: To explore the clinical application of FGD5, the study was designed to investigate the prognosis value of FGD5 expression and its correlation with immune infiltrates in LUAD patients. Methods: Through the Wilcoxon signed-rank test and logistic regression, the correlation between clinical characteristics and FGD5 expression was analyzed. Kaplan–Meier plotter analysis, Cox regression, and a… More > Graphic Abstract
