Abstract Dihydroorotate dehydrogenase (DHODH) is a central enzyme of the de novo pyrimidine biosynthesis pathway and is a promising drug target for the treatment of cancer and autoimmune diseases. This study presents the identification of a potent DHODH inhibitor by proteomic profiling. Cell-based screening revealed that NPD723, which is reduced to H-006 in cells, strongly induces myeloid differentiation and inhibits cell growth in HL-60 cells. H-006 also suppressed the growth of various cancer cells. Proteomic profiling of NPD723-treated cells in ChemProteoBase showed that NPD723 was clustered with DHODH inhibitors. H-006 potently inhibited human DHODH activity in vitro, whereas NPD723 was approximately… More >

Reconstruction of the Hindlimb Locomotion of Confuciusornis (Aves) and Its Implication for the Origin of Avian Flight

    Xinsen Wei1, Ying Guo1,2,*, Yan Zhao1

    Molecular & Cellular Biomechanics, Vol.20, No.2, pp. 49-61, 2023, DOI:10.32604/mcb.2023.041173

Abstract As one of the most basal avian clades, the Confuciusornithids are ideal in revealing the early evolution of avian flight. Birds’ hindlimbs are functionally diverse and contain a wealth of information about their behavior. The hindlimb of Confuciusornis, however, has only been studied in detail in terms of functional morphology, and quantitative studies that directly assess locomotor ability are relatively lacking. This has led to certain controversies on the behavior of Confuciusornis. This paper reviews the debates over the life habits and take-off ability of Confuciusornis, which are closely related to their hindlimb function. Several methodologies adopted engineering techniques, including… More >

Zonal Finite Line Method and Its Applications in Thermal-Mechanical Analysis of Composite Structures

    Xiaowei Gao1,*, Huayu Liu1, Weilong Fan1

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.27, No.1, pp. 1-1, 2023, DOI:10.32604/icces.2023.09510

Abstract In this paper, a novel numerical method, Zonal Free Element Method (ZFLM), is proposed and used to solve thermal-mechanical problems composed of multiple and functionally graded materials. ZFLM is a collocation method, in which two or three lines in 2D or 3D problems, called as line-set, are used at each node to establish the solution scheme solving engineering problems governed by partial differential equations. In ZFLM, the Lagrange polynomial is adopted to approximate physical variables varying over each line of the line-set. The first-order partial derivative is derived by using a directional derivative technique along arclength of a line, and… More >

Giant Flexoelectric Effect of Polymeric Porous Composite and Its Applications

    Dongze Yan1, Jianxiang Wang2, Lihua Shao1,*

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.27, No.1, pp. 1-2, 2023, DOI:10.32604/icces.2023.09357

Abstract Non-uniform strains produce a localized break in the microscopic inverse symmetry of materials, which leads to the electromechanical coupling phenomenon known as flexoelectricity in all dielectric materials. However, the size-dependent flexoelectric effect typically only manifests at small scales. Creating a considerable flexoelectric output at the macroscopic scale remains a bottleneck. Micro- and nano-porous materials own a significant number of randomly distributed microscopic pores and ligamentous structures, which can deform non-uniformly under arbitrary forms of macroscopic loading. Moreover, since the small size effect of flexoelectricity, the entire flexoelectricity of the micro- and nano-porous materials will be much more significant than that… More >

A Spatiotemporal Nonlocal Model for Overall Dynamics of Composites and Its Analytical Solutions

    Linjuan Wang1,*, Jianxiang Wang2

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.27, No.1, pp. 1-1, 2023, DOI:10.32604/icces.2023.09355

Abstract The prediction of overall dynamics of composite materials has been an intriguing research topic more than a century, and numerous approaches have been developed for this topic. One of the most successful representatives is the classical micromechanical models which assume that the behavior of a composite is the same as its constituents except for the difference in mechanical properties, e.g., effective moduli. With the development of advanced composite materials in recent years, especially metamaterials, it is found that the classical micromechanical models cannot describe complex dynamic responses of composites such as the dispersion and bandgaps of elastic waves. Thus, some… More >

Water Occurrence and Its Influencing Factors in Tight Gas Reservoirs

    Mianmo Meng1,*, Wenming Ji2

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.26, No.4, pp. 1-1, 2023, DOI:10.32604/icces.2023.09159

Abstract Tight reservoirs hold a vast natural gas in Ordos Basin, and efficient development of these resources can offset the energy shortage. Due to the low-porosity and low-permeability, hydraulic fracturing becomes necessary to tap its resources. After fracturing, a large amount of fracturing fluid fills pore space near hydraulic fracture, which will influence the gas production. This study focused on the water occurrence of tight gas reservoirs and its influencing factors. Samples were selected from Upper Paleozoic Taiyuan and Shihezi Formations from Ordos Basin. The main experiments include porosity, permeability, mineral composition, nitrogen adsorption (NA), mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP), nuclear magnetic… More >

Collocation-Based Reconstruction Harmonic Balance Method for Solving Periodic Orbits of Aerospace Vehicles

    Zipu Yan1,2, Honghua Dai1,2,*, Xiaokui Yue1,2

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.26, No.3, pp. 1-1, 2023, DOI:10.32604/icces.2023.09138

Abstract As a significant research interest in orbital mechanics, periodic orbits are fundamental for understanding orbital behaviors and space explorations. Although the harmonic balance (HB) method and its variants have been the most widely-used approaches for periodic dynamical systems, they are seldom applied to celestial dynamics. Here we use the reconstruction harmonic balance (RHB) method for solving periodic orbits. Starting from a presupposed Fourier form and an initial guess at the solution, the algorithm uses timedomain collocation points to optimally reconstruct the high-order HB procedure without complicated symbolic operations and non-physical solutions. Following a description of the method, it is applied… More >

A Peridynamics-Based Finite Element Method (PeriFEM) and Its Implementation in Commercial FEM Software for Brittle Fractures

    Fei Han1,*, Zhibin Li1, Jianyu Zhang1, Zhiying Liu1, Chen Yao1, Wenping Han1

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.26, No.3, pp. 1-1, 2023, DOI:10.32604/icces.2023.09023

Abstract The classical finite element method has been successfully applied to many engineering problems but not to cases with space discontinuity. A peridynamics-based finite element method (PeriFEM) is presented according to the principle of minimum potential energy, which enables discontinuity. First, the integral domain of peridynamics is reconstructed, and a new type of element called peridynamic element (PE) is defined. Although PEs are generated by the continuous elements (CEs) of classical FEM, they do not affect each other. Then, spatial discretization is performed based on PEs and CEs, and the linear equations about nodal displacement are established according to the principle… More >
