    Congenital Heart Disease, Vol.18, No.6, pp. 611-625, 2023, DOI:10.32604/chd.2023.047689

Abstract Background: Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) is a very common cyanotic congenital heart disease. Endothelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EndoMT) is recognized as a physiological mechanism involved in embryonic heart development and endothelial formation. However, there is still a gap in the reports related to the mechanism of EndoMT development in TOF. Methods: First, transcriptomic data of single cell nuclei of TOF and Donor were obtained based on the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database, and the data were normalized and clustered by dimensionality reduction using the Seurat package. Subsequently, differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between TOF and Donor were screened using the “FindMarkers” function, and… More >

    Yujia Liu1,2, Bo Xu1, Sen Tang3, Lang Li1, Chao He1, Qingyuan Wang1,2,3, Chong Wang1,2,*

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.27, No.4, pp. 1-1, 2023, DOI:10.32604/icces.2023.010057

Abstract This paper presents a thermodynamic characterization method for estimating the internal crack growth rate, which has been a puzzle in very high cycle fatigue research. A theoretical approach of surface temperature is established with crack size, initiation site, and time for thin sheet material. Infrared thermography is used to study the inner crack behavior and the heat dissipation phenomenon under 20 kHz vibration loading on high-strength stainless steel. A numerical simulation reveals the consequent temperature elevation on the surfaces by the heat generation at the crack tip and the heat conduction. Ultimately, the internal crack growth rate and final fatigue… More >

    Jiadong Wang1, Prabal Kandel1, Jian Deng1,*

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.27, No.3, pp. 1-1, 2023, DOI:10.32604/icces.2023.09788

Abstract The flapping foils with appropriate locomotion inspired by the high-aspect-ratio appendages from natural animals promise a new technical solution for the propulsion of both aircrafts and marine vehicles. The artificial devices using such a novel thrust system are possibly placed in a stratified flow due to the fact that the stratification is ubiquitous throughout real-world environment. Based on a series of two-dimensional numerical simulations, the propulsive performance and wake structure of a fully-activated flapping foil in a density stratified fluid are investigated in this work. It is found that the hydrodynamic characteristics of flapping foils in the stratified flow show… More >

    XIAOJIA HUANG1,#, CAILU SONG2,#, JINHUI ZHANG2, LEWEI ZHU3,*, HAILIN TANG2,*

    Oncology Research, Vol.32, No.2, pp. 241-249, 2024, DOI:10.32604/or.2023.046582

Abstract Breast cancer has surpassed lung cancer to become the most common malignancy worldwide. The incidence rate and mortality rate of breast cancer continue to rise, which leads to a great burden on public health. Circular RNAs (circRNAs), a new class of noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs), have been recognized as important oncogenes or suppressors in regulating cancer initiation and progression. In breast cancer, circRNAs have significant roles in tumorigenesis, recurrence and multidrug resistance that are mediated by various mechanisms. Therefore, circRNAs may serve as promising targets of therapeutic strategies for breast cancer management. This study reviews the most recent studies about the… More >

Abstract Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) plays an essential role in cellular metabolism, mitochondrial homeostasis, inflammation, and senescence. However, the role of NAD+-regulated genes, including coding and long non-coding genes in cancer development is poorly understood. We constructed a prediction model based on the expression level of NAD+ metabolism-related genes (NMRGs). Furthermore, we validated the expression of NMRGs in gastric cancer (GC) tissues and cell lines; additionally, β-nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN), a precursor of NAD+, was used to treat the GC cell lines to analyze its effects on the expression level of NMRGs lncRNAs and cellular proliferation, cell cycle, apoptosis, and senescence-associated secretory… More > Graphic Abstract

Vaccinia-related kinase 2 variants differentially affect breast cancer growth by regulating kinase activity

    SEUNG-HEE GWAK1, JUHYUN LEE1, EUNJI OH1, DOHYUN LEE1,2, WONSHIK HAN3, JONGMIN KIM1,*, KYONG-TAI KIM4,*

    Oncology Research, Vol.32, No.2, pp. 421-432, 2024, DOI:10.32604/or.2023.031031

Abstract Genetic information is transcribed from genomic DNA to mRNA, which is then translated into three-dimensional proteins. mRNAs can undergo various post-transcriptional modifications, including RNA editing that alters mRNA sequences, ultimately affecting protein function. In this study, RNA editing was identified at the 499th base (c.499) of human vaccinia-related kinase 2 (VRK2). This RNA editing changes the amino acid in the catalytic domain of VRK2 from isoleucine (with adenine base) to valine (with guanine base). Isoleucine-containing VRK2 has higher kinase activity than the valine-containing VRK2, which leads to an increase in tumor cell proliferation. Earlier we reported that VRK2 directly interacts… More > Graphic Abstract

Abstract Castor, scientifically known as Ricinus communis L., is among the top ten oil crops globally. It is considered a renewable resource and is commonly referred to as ‘green oil’. Castor seeds contain castor oil as their main component, which is predominantly composed of ricinoleic acid. This study utilized RNAi technology to silence the NPC6 gene in NO.2129 castor, resulting in the creation of mutant plants L1 and L2. The weight of 100 dry seed kernels from L1 and L2 exceeds that from NO.2129. The crude fat and ricinoleic acid levels of L1 and L2 were higher than those of NO.2129… More >
