AAV-based gene therapy approaches for genetic forms of tauopathies and related neurogenetic disorders

MOHAMED AGHYAD AL KABBANI1,2, GILBERT WUNDERLICH3,4, CHRISTOPH KöHLER5, HANS ZEMPEL1,2,*

    BIOCELL, Vol.46, No.4, pp. 847-853, 2022, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2022.018144

Abstract Tauopathies comprise a spectrum of genetic and sporadic neurodegenerative diseases mainly characterized by the presence of hyperphosphorylated TAU protein aggregations in neurons or glia. Gene therapy, in particular adeno-associated virus (AAV)-based, is an effective medical approach for difficult-to-treat genetic diseases for which there are no convincing traditional therapies, such as tauopathies. Employing AAV-based gene therapy to treat, in particular, genetic tauopathies has many potential therapeutic benefits, but also drawbacks which need to be addressed in order to successfully and efficiently adapt this still unconventional therapy for the various types of tauopathies. In this Viewpoint, we briefly introduce some potentially treatable… More >

    Fuad Ali Mohammed Al-Yarimi*

    Intelligent Automation & Soft Computing, Vol.32, No.3, pp. 1729-1742, 2022, DOI:10.32604/iasc.2022.022418

Abstract Computer-aided arrhythmia prediction from ECG (electrocardiograms) is essential in clinical practices, which promises to reduce the mortality caused by inexperienced clinical practitioners. Moreover, computer-aided methods often succeed in the early detection of arrhythmia scope from electrocardiogram reports. Machine learning is the buzz of computer-aided clinical practices. Particularly, computer-aided arrhythmia prediction methods highly adopted machine learning methods. However, the high dimensionality in feature values considered for the machine learning models’ training phase often causes false alarming. This manuscript addressed the high dimensionality in the learning phase and proposed an (Ensemble Learning method for Arrhythmia Prediction) ELAP (ensemble learning-based arrhythmia prediction). Vatsala Anand1, Sheifali Gupta1, Deepika Koundal2,*, Shubham Mahajan3, Amit Kant Pandit3, Atef Zaguia4

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.71, No.2, pp. 3145-3160, 2022, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2022.022788

Abstract Biomedical image analysis has been exploited considerably by recent technology involvements, carrying about a pattern shift towards ‘automation’ and ‘error free diagnosis’ classification methods with markedly improved accurate diagnosis productivity and cost effectiveness. This paper proposes an automated deep learning model to diagnose skin disease at an early stage by using Dermoscopy images. The proposed model has four convolutional layers, two maxpool layers, one fully connected layer and three dense layers. All the convolutional layers are using the kernel size of 3 * 3 whereas the maxpool layer is using the kernel size of 2 * 2. The dermoscopy images… More >

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.71, No.2, pp. 3667-3684, 2022, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2022.022264

Abstract Agriculture is the backbone of each country, and almost 50% of the population is directly involved in farming. In Pakistan, several kinds of fruits are produced and exported the other countries. Citrus is an important fruit, and its production in Pakistan is higher than the other fruits. However, the diseases of citrus fruits such as canker, citrus scab, blight, and a few more impact the quality and quantity of this Fruit. The manual diagnosis of these diseases required an expert person who is always a time-consuming and costly procedure. In the agriculture sector, deep learning showing significant success in the… More >

Optimization of Deep Learning Model for Plant Disease Detection Using Particle Swarm Optimizer

    Ahmed Elaraby1,*, Walid Hamdy2, Madallah Alruwaili3

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.71, No.2, pp. 4019-4031, 2022, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2022.022161

Abstract Plant diseases are a major impendence to food security, and due to a lack of key infrastructure in many regions of the world, quick identification is still challenging. Harvest losses owing to illnesses are a severe problem for both large farming structures and rural communities, motivating our mission. Because of the large range of diseases, identifying and classifying diseases with human eyes is not only time-consuming and labor intensive, but also prone to being mistaken with a high error rate. Deep learning-enabled breakthroughs in computer vision have cleared the road for smartphone-assisted plant disease and diagnosis. The proposed work describes… More >

Plant Disease Diagnosis and Image Classification Using Deep Learning

    Rahul Sharma1, Amar Singh1, Kavita2, N. Z. Jhanjhi3, Mehedi Masud4, Emad Sami Jaha5, Sahil Verma2,*

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.71, No.2, pp. 2125-2140, 2022, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2022.020017

Abstract Indian agriculture is striving to achieve sustainable intensification, the system aiming to increase agricultural yield per unit area without harming natural resources and the ecosystem. Modern farming employs technology to improve productivity. Early and accurate analysis and diagnosis of plant disease is very helpful in reducing plant diseases and improving plant health and food crop productivity. Plant disease experts are not available in remote areas thus there is a requirement of automatic low-cost, approachable and reliable solutions to identify the plant diseases without the laboratory inspection and expert's opinion. Deep learning-based computer vision techniques like Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and… More >

Deep Learning Based Automated Detection of Diseases from Apple Leaf Images

    Swati Singh1, Isha Gupta2, Sheifali Gupta2, Deepika Koundal3,*, Sultan Aljahdali4, Shubham Mahajan5, Amit Kant Pandit5

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.71, No.1, pp. 1849-1866, 2022, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2022.021875

Abstract In Agriculture Sciences, detection of diseases is one of the most challenging tasks. The mis-interpretations of plant diseases often lead to wrong pesticide selection, resulting in damage of crops. Hence, the automatic recognition of the diseases at earlier stages is important as well as economical for better quality and quantity of fruits. Computer aided detection (CAD) has proven as a supportive tool for disease detection and classification, thus allowing the identification of diseases and reducing the rate of degradation of fruit quality. In this research work, a model based on convolutional neural network with 19 convolutional layers has been proposed… More >

Abstract Plant diseases are a major cause of degraded fruit quality and yield losses. These losses can be significantly reduced with early detection of diseases to ensure their timely treatment, particularly in developing countries. In this regard, an expert system based on deep learning model where the expert knowledge, particularly the one acquired by plant pathologist, is recursively learned by the system and is applied using a smart phone application for use in the target field environment, is being proposed. In this paper, a robust disease detection method is developed based on convolutional neural network (CNN), where its powerful features extraction… More >

Abstract Agriculture has been an important research area in the field of image processing for the last five years. Diseases affect the quality and quantity of fruits, thereby disrupting the economy of a country. Many computerized techniques have been introduced for detecting and recognizing fruit diseases. However, some issues remain to be addressed, such as irrelevant features and the dimensionality of feature vectors, which increase the computational time of the system. Herein, we propose an integrated deep learning framework for classifying fruit diseases. We consider seven types of fruits, i.e., apple, cherry, blueberry, grapes, peach, citrus, and strawberry. The proposed method… More >
