    Abstract Mechanical stimulation is critical to both physiological and pathological states of living cells.     Longitudinal Vibration Analysis of Marine Riser During Installation and Hangoff in Ultra Deepwater

    Abstract This paper is concerned with the problem of longitudinal vibration of a 3,000 m long disconnected drilling riser during installation and hangoff operation. The natural frequency, amplitude of vibration displacement and vibration force of longitudinal vibration have been determined with consideration of the damping effect of the sea water. Results show the natural frequency of riser under these two situations are both decrease with the increase of water depth. The natural frequency of riser in installation operation is bigger than that in hangoff operation.     Abstract This paper studies the influence of the imperfectness of the interface conditions on the dispersion of the axisymmetric longitudinal waves in the pre-strained compound cylinder. The investigations are made within the framework of the piecewise homogeneous body model by utilizing the 3D linearized theory of elastic waves in elastic bodies with initial stresses.     Abstract The present paper describes computation of the time-dependent Green's function for the equations of longitudinal vibration of a multi-step rod with a piecewise constant varying cross-section. This computation is based on generalization of the Fourier series expansion method. The time-dependent Green's function is derived in the form of the Fourier series. The basic functions of this series are eigenfunctions of an ordinary differential equation with boundary and matching conditions.     Abstract The paper investigates propagation of stationary plane longitudinal and transverse waves along the layers in adhesively bonded multilayered structures for MEMS applications in the presence of residual stresses. The multilayered structure is assumed to consist of the infinite amount of the periodically recurring layers made of two different materials possessing significantly dissimilar properties: conductive metal layer and insulating adhesive layer.     Abstract The optimum shapes for the longitudinal and spine fully wet fins are estimated in the present inverse design problem by using the conjugate gradient method (CGM) based on the desired fin efficiency and fin volume. One of the advantages in using CGM in the inverse design problem lies in that it can handle problems having a large number of unknown parameters easily and converges very fast.     Abstract Networks of radial and longitudinally-coplanar, internal, surface cracks are typical in rifled, autofrettaged, gun barrels. In two previous papers, the separate effects of large arrays of either radial or longitudinally-coplanar semi-elliptical, internal, surface cracks in a thick-walled, cylindrical, pressure vessel under both ideal and realistic autofrettage were studied. When pressure is considered solely, radial crack density and longitudinal crack spacing were found to have opposing effects on the prevailing stress intensity factor, KIP.
