Yuxin Zheng, Ke Xu, Baicheng Zhang, Shengxin Guan, Lin Xia, Zhaoge Huang*

    Journal of Polymer Materials, Vol.42, No.1, pp. 237-253, 2025, DOI:10.32604/jpm.2025.059622 - 27 March 2025

Abstract In this manuscript, we conveniently prepared a series of polyester-polycarbonate copolymer (PPC-P)/polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBAT) blends that exhibit both flame-retardant properties and toughness. Piperazine pyrophosphate (PAPP), melamine phosphate (MPP) and ZnO were used as synergistic flame retardants for PPC-P/PBAT blends. The effects of synergistic flame retardants on thermal stability, combustion behavior and flame retardancy of PPC-P/PBAT blends were investigated. The results showed that when the ratio of PAPP/MPP/ZnO was 18.4:9.2:2.4, the LOI of PPC-P/PBAT composite was 42.8%, and UL-94 reached V-0 level. The results of cone calorimetry showed that the mass loss rate (MLR), the… More >

    BIOCELL, Vol.49, No.3, pp. 503-518, 2025, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2025.059286 - 31 March 2025

Abstract Background: Nudix Hydrolase 21 (NUDT21) is crucial for the regulation of alternative polyadenylation, with its reduced expression frequently resulting in a shortened mRNA 3 untranslated region (UTR), thereby enhancing the protein levels of downstream genes. Although NUDT21 is widely recognized for its tumor-suppressive function in various cancers, its involvement in colorectal cancer (CRC) remains poorly understood. Methods: The expression of NUDT21 in CRC and adjacent normal tissues was analyzed through qPCR, Western blot, and immunohistochemistry (IHC). Additionally, we investigated the correlation between NUDT21 expression and patient prognosis. With Cell Counting Kit-8 assay and Transwell assay, we… More >

Abstract The yield of direct-seeded rice (DSR) was constrained by inadequate grain filling. Recent studies have indicated that paclobutrazol application plays a significant role in enhancing crop agronomic traits and increasing yield. This study aimed to examine the effects of paclobutrazol seed soaking (PSS) on non-structural carbohydrate accumulation and grain enrichment in DSR, potentially providing a theoretical foundation for achieving high-yield DSR cultivation. The experiment utilized two rice varieties, Jiyujing (JYJ) and Jijing305 (JJ305), with seeds soaked in paclobutrazol concentrations of 0 mg L−1 and 100 mg L−1. PSS demonstrated increased chlorophyll content, net photosynthetic rate, and… More >

Abstract Flooding is a natural event often associated with floodplain areas, characterised by large, sudden and significant rises in river water levels that drastically alters the surrounding landscape. The research employs ArcGIS tools, multi-criteria evaluation techniques and the Maximum Entropy (MaxEnt) model to assess flood hazard zones. The key physical elements of slope, elevation, rainfall, drainage density, land use, and soil types have been integrated to identify areas vulnerable to flooding. Overlay analysis has been used to construct zones specifically designated for flood hazards. Additionally, pairwise comparison using Saaty’s scale was employed to calculate the Eigenvector More > Graphic Abstract

An SPH Framework for Earthquake-Induced Liquefaction Hazard Assessment of Geotechnical Structures

    Sourabh Mhaski*, G. V. Ramana

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.142, No.1, pp. 251-277, 2025, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2024.055963 - 17 December 2024

Abstract Earthquake-induced soil liquefaction poses significant risks to the stability of geotechnical structures worldwide. An understanding of the liquefaction triggering, and the post-failure large deformation behaviour is essential for designing resilient infrastructure. The present study develops a Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) framework for earthquake-induced liquefaction hazard assessment of geotechnical structures. The coupled flow-deformation behaviour of soils subjected to cyclic loading is described using the PM4Sand model implemented in a three-phase, single-layer SPH framework. A staggered discretisation scheme based on the stress particle SPH approach is adopted to minimise numerical inaccuracies caused by zero-energy modes and tensile… More >

Case of drug-induced kidney stone from overuse of phenazopyridine

    Suraj Pursnani, Necole M. Streeper

    Canadian Journal of Urology, Vol.31, No.3, pp. 11911-11913, 2024

Abstract Drug-induced nephrolithiasis represents only 1%-2% of stone cases. Here we focus on drugs capable of crystallizing and forming stone, specifically phenazopyridine (Pyridium/Azo). This is a case of a patient who presented with a stone conglomerate in the right proximal ureter and underwent definitive treatment. Interestingly, the stone had a purple hue with FTIR spectroscopy showing stone composition of calcium oxalate (monohydrate and dihydrate) and a material resembling phenazopyridine. We retrospectively learned that she used multiple extended courses of phenazopyridine over 3 months. More >

    BIOCELL, Vol.48, No.10, pp. 1489-1501, 2024, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2024.053930 - 02 October 2024

Abstract Objective: Studies have demonstrated that administering statins promptly following myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (MI/R) can confer cardioprotective benefits. This study investigates whether Lovastatin can modulate the Yes-associated protein/Transcriptional co-activator with PDZ-binding motif (YAP/TAZ) signaling pathway to mitigate cardiomyocyte injury caused by hypoxia/reoxygenation (H/R). Methods: The in vitro MI/R model was established by H/R in rat myocardial H9c2 cells, and the cells were pretreated with varying doses of Lovastatin before reoxygenation. The extent of cellular injury was evaluated by measuring the myocardial enzyme content and cell viability. The levels of oxidative stress and inflammatory factors were quantified by enzyme-linked… More > Graphic Abstract
