    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.13, No.10, pp. 1935-1977, 2025, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2025.02025-0026 - 22 October 2025

Abstract The review investigates the use of biomass-derived carbon as precursors for nanomaterials, acknowledging their sustainability and eco-friendliness. It examines various types of biomasses, such as agricultural residues and food byproducts, focussing on their transformation via environmentally friendly methods such as pyrolysis and hydrothermal carbonisation. Innovations in creating porous carbon nanostructures and heteroatom surface functionalisation are identified, enhancing catalytic performance. The study also explores the integration of biomass-derived carbon with nanomaterials for energy storage, catalysis, and other applications, noting the economic and environmental benefits. Despite these advantages, challenges persist in optimising synthesis methods and scaling production. More > Graphic Abstract

    Energy Engineering, Vol.122, No.10, pp. 3999-4017, 2025, DOI:10.32604/ee.2025.068054 - 30 September 2025

Abstract The process of including renewable energy sources in power networks is moving quickly, so the need for innovative configuration solutions for grid-side ESS has grown. Among the new methods presented in this paper is GA-OCESE, which stands for Genetic Algorithm-based Optimization Configuration for Energy Storage in Electric Networks. This is one of the methods suggested in this study, which aims to enhance the sizing, positioning, and operational characteristics of structured ESS under dynamic grid conditions. Particularly, the aim is to maximize efficiency. A multiobjective genetic algorithm, the GA-OCESE framework, considers all these factors simultaneously. Besides… More >

Calculation of Commutation Failure Overvoltage in High-Voltage Direct Current Transmission Terminal Systems with Grid-Forming Renewable Energy Sources

    Weibing Xu1, Bo Yao2,*, Xiangjun Quan3, Xunyou Zhang1, Ning Zou2, Shuo Liu2, Jia Wang4, Jiansuo Zhang4

    Energy Engineering, Vol.122, No.10, pp. 4225-4243, 2025, DOI:10.32604/ee.2025.066738 - 30 September 2025

Abstract The integration of large-scale new energy and high-capacity DC transmission leads to a reduction in system inertia. Grid-forming renewable energy sources (GF-RES) has a significant improvement effect on system inertia. Commutation failure faults may cause a short-term reactive power surplus at the sending end and trigger transient overvoltage, threatening the safe and stable operation of the power grid. However, there is a lack of research on the calculation method of transient overvoltage caused by commutation failure in high-voltage DC transmission systems with grid-forming renewable energy sources integration. Based on the existing equivalent model of high-voltage… More >

Abstract Around the world, there has been a notable shift toward the use of renewable energy technology due to the growing demand for energy and the ongoing depletion of conventional resources, such as fossil fuels. Following this worldwide trend, Brunei’s government has initiated several strategic programs aimed at encouraging the establishment of energy from renewable sources in the nation’s energy mix. These initiatives are designed not only to support environmental sustainability but also to make energy from renewable sources increasingly competitive in comparison to more conventional energy sources like gas and oil, which have historically dominated… More >

A Feasibility Study of Renewable Energy Generation from Palm Oil Waste in Malaysia

Mujahid Tabassum1,*, Md. Bazlul Mobin Siddique2, Hadi Nabipour Afrouzi3, Saad Bin Abdul Kashem4

    Energy Engineering, Vol.122, No.9, pp. 3433-3457, 2025, DOI:10.32604/ee.2025.065955 - 26 August 2025

Abstract Malaysia, as one of the highest producers of palm oil globally and one of the largest exporters, has a huge potential to use palm oil waste to generate electricity since an abundance of waste is produced during the palm oil extraction process. In this paper, we have first examined and compared the use of palm oil waste as biomass for electricity generation in different countries with reference to Malaysia. Some areas with default accessibility in rural areas, like those in Sabah and Sarawak, require a cheap and reliable source of electricity. Palm oil waste possesses… More >

Abstract Nowadays, the development of effective bioplastics aims to combine traditional plastics’ functionality with environmentally friendly properties. The most effective and durable modern bioplastics are made from the edible part of crops. This forces bioplastics to compete with food production because the crops that produce bioplastics can also be used for human nutrition. That is why the article’s main focus is on creating bioplastics using renewable, non-food raw materials (cellulose, lignin, etc.). Eco-friendly composites based on a renewable bioplastic blend of polybutylene adipate-co-terephthalate, corn starch, and poly(lactic acid) with reed and hemp waste as a filler.… More > Graphic Abstract

Sustainable Biocomposites from Renewable Resources in West Africa: A Review

    Souha Mansour1,2,*, Amandine Viretto1,2, Marie-France Thevenon1,2,*, Loïc Brancheriau1,2

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.13, No.8, pp. 1547-1586, 2025, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2025.02024-0078 - 22 August 2025

Abstract The use of agricultural residues in biocomposite production has gained increasing attention, driven by several benefits. Converting agricultural by-products into bio-based materials within a circular economy represents a sustainable strategy to mitigate lignocellulosic waste, reduce reliance on fossil resources, and lower environmental pollution. This approach also creates economic opportunities for rural African communities by generating diverse income sources for workers in collection, processing, and manufacturing. As a result, the integration of agricultural residues into biocomposites production not only addresses environmental concerns but also fosters economic growth and supports rural development. In this review, five biomasses… More > Graphic Abstract

Abstract In this research work, the localized generation from renewable resources and the distribution of energy to agricultural loads, which is a local microgrid concept, have been considered, and its feasibility has been assessed. Two dispatch algorithms, named Cycle Charging and Load Following, are implemented to find the optimal solution (i.e., net cost, operation cost, carbon emission. energy cost, component sizing, etc.) of the hybrid system. The microgrid is also modeled in the DIgSILENT Power Factory platform, and the respective power system responses are then evaluated. The development of dispatch algorithms specifically tailored for agricultural applications… More >

    Xiaolong Xiao1, Xiaoxing Lu1,*, Ziran Guo1, Jian Liu1, Shenglong Wu2, Ye Cai2

    Energy Engineering, Vol.122, No.8, pp. 3117-3132, 2025, DOI:10.32604/ee.2025.065631 - 24 July 2025

Abstract With the popularization of microgrid construction and the connection of renewable energy sources to the power system, the problem of source and load uncertainty faced by the coordinated operation of multi-microgrid is becoming increasingly prominent, and the accuracy of typical scenario predictions is low. In order to improve the accuracy of scenario prediction under source and load uncertainty, this paper proposes a typical scenario identification model based on random forests and order parameters. Firstly, a method for ordinal parameter identification and quantification is provided for the coordinated operating mode of multi-microgrids, taking into account source-load… More >
