Functionalised Poly(Vinyl Alcohol)/Graphene Oxide as Polymer Composite Electrolyte Membranes

    O. Gil-Castell1,2, R. Cerveró1, R. Teruel-Juanes1, J. D. Badia1,2, A. Ribes-Greus1,*

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.7, No.7, pp. 655-665, 2019, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2019.04401

Abstract Crosslinked poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) based composite films were prepared as polyelectrolyte membranes for low temperature direct ethanol fuel cells (DEFC). The membranes were functionalised by means of the addition of graphene oxide (GO) and sulfonated graphene oxide (SGO) and crosslinked with sulfosuccinic acid (SSA). The chemical structure was corroborated and suitable thermal properties were found. Although the addition of GO and SGO slightly decreased the proton conductivity of the membranes, a significant reduction of the ethanol solution swelling and crossover was encountered, more relevant for those functionalised with SGO. In general, the composite membranes were stable under simulated service conditions.… More >

Direct and Indirect Approach of a Desingularized Boundary Element Formulation for Acoustical Problems

    S. Callsen1, O. von Estorff1, O. Zaleski2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.6, No.5, pp. 421-430, 2004, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2004.006.421

Abstract In standard boundary element formulations, singular integrals need to be solved as soon as the considered sources coincide with the collocation points at the boundary. Using a desingularized boundary element approach, the sources are distributed on a surface outside the acoustic domain which means that they are never located at the boundary. Consequently, all the resulting kernels are nonsingular which reduces the complexity of the numerical treatment of the boundary integral equations considerably. In the current contribution a desingularized formulation is given for both, the direct and the indirect boundary element method used to solve acoustical problems. Three basic examples… More >

Indirect RBFN Method with Scattered Points for Numerical Solution of PDEs

    Nam Mai-Duy1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.6, No.2, pp. 209-226, 2004, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2004.006.209

Abstract This paper is concerned with the use of the indirect radial basis function network (RBFN) method in solving partial differential equations (PDEs) with scattered points. Indirect RBFNs (Mai-Duy and Tran-Cong, 2001a), which are based on an integration process, are employed to approximate the solution of PDEs via point collocation mechanism in the set of randomly distributed points. The method is tested with the solution of Poisson's equations and the Navier-Stokes equations (Boussinesq material). Good results are obtained using relatively low numbers of data points. For example, the natural convection flow in a square cavity at Rayleigh number of 1.e6 is… More >

    Marwa Abida1,2, Jamel Mars3,*, Florian Gehring1, Alexandre Vivet1, Fakhreddine Dammak3

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.6, No.5, pp. 464-476, 2018, DOI:10.32604/JRM.2018.01897

Abstract Based on experimental test results, flax fiber reinforced polymer composites are characterized by nonlinear visco-elastoplastic behavior. The aim of this work is to model the quasi-unidirectional flax fiber reinforced composite behavior through a three dimensional formulation with orthotropic elasticity and orthotropic plasticity using Hill criterion. The isotropic hardening and Johnson Cook parameters are identified from unidirectional tensile tests at different strain rates. The adjustment of Hill’s yield criterion is developed based on yield stresses obtained in tensile tests at different directions. The numerical integration of the constitutive equations is implemented in a user-defined material, UMAT subroutines for the commercial finite… More >

Investigation of Tissue Thermal Damage Process with Application of Direct Sensitivity Method

    Marek Jasiński*

    Molecular & Cellular Biomechanics, Vol.10, No.3, pp. 183-199, 2013, DOI:10.3970/mcb.2013.010.183

Abstract In the paper the numerical analysis of thermal processes proceeding in the biological tissue is presented. The tissue is subjected to the external heat flux and 2D problem is taken into account. In order to determine the influence of variations of thermophysical parameters of tissue on the value of Arrhenius injury integral the direct approach of sensitivity analysis is applied. On the basis of tissue damage fraction the thermal injury formation process is analysed. At the stage of numerical realization the boundary element method is used. In the final part of the paper the example of numerical simulation is shown. More >

Role of Shear Stress Direction in Endothelial Mechanotransduction

    Shu Chien*

    Molecular & Cellular Biomechanics, Vol.5, No.1, pp. 1-8, 2008, DOI:10.3970/mcb.2008.005.001

Abstract Fluid shear stress due to blood flow can modulate functions of endothelial cells (ECs) in blood vessels by activating mechano-sensors, signaling pathways, and gene and protein expressions. Laminar shear stress with a definite forward direction causes transient activations of many genes that are atherogenic, followed by their down-regulation; laminar shear stress also up-regulates genes that inhibit EC growth. In contrast, disturbed flow patterns with little forward direction cause sustained activations of these atherogenic genes and enhancements of EC mitosis and apoptosis. In straight parts of the arterial tree, laminar shear stress with a definite forward direction has anti-atherogenic effects. At… More >

Modeling Ultrasonic Transient Scattering from Biological Tissues Including their Dispersive Properties Directly in the Time Domain

    G.V. Norton*, J.C. Novarini

    Molecular & Cellular Biomechanics, Vol.4, No.2, pp. 75-86, 2007, DOI:10.3970/mcb.2007.004.075

Abstract Ultrasonic imaging in medical applications involves propagation and scattering of acoustic waves within and by biological tissues that are intrinsically dispersive. Analytical approaches for modeling propagation and scattering in inhomogeneous media are difficult and often require extremely simplifying approximations in order to achieve a solution. To avoid such approximations, the direct numerical solution of the wave equation via the method of finite differences offers the most direct tool, which takes into account diffraction and refraction. It also allows for detailed modeling of the real anatomic structure and combination/layering of tissues. In all cases the correct inclusion of the dispersive properties… More >

Control of the Direction of Lamellipodia Extension through Changes in the Balance between Rac and Rho Activities

    A.L. Brock, D.E. Ingber1

    Molecular & Cellular Biomechanics, Vol.2, No.3, pp. 135-144, 2005, DOI:10.3970/mcb.2005.002.135

Abstract The direction in which cells extend new motile processes, such as lamellipodia and filopodia, can be controlled by altering the geometry of extracellular matrix adhesive islands on which individual cells are cultured, thereby altering mechanical interactions between cells and the adhesive substrate [Parker (2002)]. Here we specifically investigate the intracellular molecular signals that mediate the mechanism by which cells selectively extend these processes from the corners of polygonal-shaped adhesive islands. Constitutive activation of the small GTPase Rac within cells cultured on square-shaped islands of fibronectin resulted in the elimination of preferential extension from corners. This loss of directionality was accompanied… More >

Directional Antenna Intelligent Coverage Method Based on Traversal Optimization Algorithm

    Jialuan He1,2, Zirui Xing2, Rong Hu2, Jing Qiu3,*, Shen Su3,*, Yuhan Chai3, Yue Wu4

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.60, No.2, pp. 527-544, 2019, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2019.05586

Abstract Wireless broadband communication is widely used in maneuver command communications systems in many fields, such as military operations, counter-terrorism and disaster relief. How to reasonably formulate the directional antenna coverage strategy according to the mobile terminal dynamic distribution and guide the directional antenna dynamic coverage becomes a practical research topic. In many applications, a temporary wireless boardband base station is required to support wireless signal communications between many terminals from nearby vehicles and staffs. It is therefore important to efficiently set directional antenna while ensuring large enough coverage over dynamically distributed terminals. The wireless broadband base station mostly uses two… More >
