    Nishit Savla1, Raksha Anand2, Soumya Pandit2,*, Ram Prasad3,*

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.8, No.12, pp. 1581-1605, 2020, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2020.011803

Abstract Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are an attractive innovation at the nexus of energy and water security for the future. MFC utilizes electrochemically active microorganisms to oxidize biodegradable substrates and generate bioelectricity in a single step. The material of the anode plays a vital role in increasing the MFC’s power output. The anode in MFC can be upgraded using nanomaterials providing benefits of exceptional physicochemical properties. The nanomaterials in anode gives a high surface area, improved electron transfer promotes electroactive biofilm. Enhanced power output in terms of Direct current (DC) can be obtained as the consequence of improved microbe-electrode interaction. However,… More >

Influence of Biochar on Nitrogen Use Efficiency and Root Morphology of Rice-Seedling in Two Contrasting Paddy Soils

    Lei Chu1,2, Yu Zhang1,2, Long Qian1,2, Dandan Zhu1,2, Haijun Sun1,2,*

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.89, No.4, pp. 1035-1042, 2020, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2020.014506

Abstract Biochar may affect the root morphology and nitrogen (N) use efficiency (NUE) of rice at seedling stage, which has not been clearly verified until now. To clarify it, we conducted a pot experiment regarding to two soil types (Hydragric Anthrosol and Haplic Acrisol), two biochar application rates (0.5 wt% and 1.5 wt %) and two rice varieties (common rice var. Xiushui134 and hybrid super rice var. Zhongkejiayou12-6) meanwhile. Seedling NUE of common rice Xiuhui134 was significantly increased (p < 0.05) by 78.2% in Hydragric Anthrosol and by 91.4% in Haplic Acrisol following biochar addition with 1.5 wt%. However, biochar addition… More >

Towards Interference-Aware ZigBee Transmissions in Heterogeneous Wireless Networks

    Sangsoon Lim1, Sanghyun Seo2,*

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.66, No.1, pp. 751-765, 2021, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2020.013430

Abstract Cross-technology interference (CTI) from diverse wireless networks such as ZigBee, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi has become a severe problem in the 2.4 GHz Industrial Scientific and Medical (ISM) band. Especially, low power and lossy networks are vulnerable to the signal interferences from other aggressive wireless networks when they perform low power operations to conserve the energy consumption. This paper presents CoSense, which accurately detects ZigBee signals with a reliable signal correlation scheme in the presence of the CTI. The key concept of CoSense is to reduce false wake-ups of low power listening (LPL) by identifying the pre-defined ZigBee signatures. Our scheme… More >

Computer Methodologies for the Comparison of Some Efficient Derivative Free Simultaneous Iterative Methods for Finding Roots of Non-Linear Equations

    Yuming Chu1, Naila Rafiq2, Mudassir Shams3,*, Saima Akram4, Nazir Ahmad Mir3, Humaira Kalsoom5

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.66, No.1, pp. 275-290, 2021, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2020.011907

Abstract In this article, we construct the most powerful family of simultaneous iterative method with global convergence behavior among all the existing methods in literature for finding all roots of non-linear equations. Convergence analysis proved that the order of convergence of the family of derivative free simultaneous iterative method is nine. Our main aim is to check out the most regularly used simultaneous iterative methods for finding all roots of non-linear equations by studying their dynamical planes, numerical experiments and CPU time-methodology. Dynamical planes of iterative methods are drawn by using MATLAB for the comparison of global convergence properties of simultaneous… More >

Design of a Compact Monopole Antenna for UWB Applications

Naeem Ahmad Jan1, Saad Hassan Kiani2, Daniyal Ali Sehrai2, Muhammad Rizwan Anjum3, Amjad Iqbal4, Mujeeb Abdullah5, Sunghwan Kim6,*

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.66, No.1, pp. 35-44, 2021, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2020.012800

Abstract In this paper, a low cost, highly efficient and low profile monopole antenna for ultra-wideband (UWB) applications is presented. A new inverted triangular-shape structure possessing meander lines is designed to achieve a wideband response and high efficiency. To design the proposed structure, three steps are utilized to achieve an UWB response. The bandwidth of the proposed antenna is improved with changing meander lines parameters, miniaturization of the ground width and optimization of the feeding line. The measured and simulated frequency band ranges from 3.2 to 12 GHz, while the radiation patterns are measured at 4, 5.3, 6 and 8 GHz… More >

Energy Retrofitting of School Buildings in UAE

Abdelsalam Aldawoud*, Fatma Elzahraa Hosny, Rasha Mdkhana

    Energy Engineering, Vol.117, No.6, pp. 381-395, 2020, DOI:10.32604/EE.2020.011863

Abstract The opportunities for energy savings by retrofitting of the existing school buildings in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are significant because of their excessive energy consumption and space cooling demand. In this research, energy modeling and simulation are utilized with the use of Design Builder software to examine the influence of various retrofitting measures of air-conditioning (A/C) system and building envelope components on the energy use. Several combined measures are implemented and assessed to achieve the main goal of this research of selecting the best course of action to reduce cooling energy consumption for existing school buildings in the UAE.… More >

Improved Thermal Efficiency of Salinity Gradient Solar Pond by Suppressing Surface Evaporation Using an Air Layer

    Asaad H. Sayer1, Hameed B. Mahood2,*

    Energy Engineering, Vol.117, No.6, pp. 367-379, 2020, DOI:10.32604/EE.2020.011156

Abstract Salinity gradient solar ponds (SGSPs) provide a tremendous way to collect and store solar radiation as thermal energy, and can help meet the critical need for sustainable ways of producing fresh water. However, surface evaporation results in the loss of both water and heat. This study therefore theoretically investigates the effect on temperatures within an SGSP when its surface is covered with a layer of air encased in a nylon bag. An earlier SGSP model was slightly modified to add the air layer and to estimate the temperature distributions of the upper layer or the upper convective zone (UCZ) and… More >

Hybrid Soft Computing Technique Based Trust Evaluation Protocol for Wireless Sensor Networks

    Supreet Kaur*, Vijay Kumar Joshi

    Intelligent Automation & Soft Computing, Vol.26, No.2, pp. 217-226, 2020, DOI:10.31209/2018.100000064

Abstract Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are susceptible to safety threats due to cumulative dependence upon transmission, computing, and control mechanisms. Therefore, securing the end-to-end communication becomes a major area of research in WSNs. A majority of existing protocols are based upon signature and recommended-based trust evaluation techniques only. However, these techniques are vulnerable to wormhole attacks that happen due to lesser synchronization between the sensor nodes. Therefore, to handle this problem, a novel hybrid crossover-based ant colony optimization-based routing protocol is proposed. An integrated modified signature and recommendationbased trust evaluation protocol for WSNs is presented. Extensive experiments reveal that the proposed… More >
