Abstract Clay, as the most common soil used for foundation fill, is widely used in various infrastructure projects. The physical and mechanical properties of clay are influenced by the pore solution environment. This study uses a GDS static/dynamic triaxial apparatus and nuclear magnetic resonance experiments to investigate the effects of cyclic loading on clay foundations. Moreover, the development of cumulative strain in clay is analyzed, and a fitting model for cumulative plastic strain is introduced by considering factors such as NaCl solution concentration, consolidation stress ratio, and cycle number. In particular, the effects of the NaCl solution concentration and consolidation stress… More >

Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.21, pp. 47-63, 2023, DOI:10.32604/fhmt.2023.045134

Abstract The calculation of heat and humidity load serves as the cornerstone of Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) design. Nevertheless, as the heat and humidity load characteristics of underground structures differ substantially from those of above-ground structures, it is a challenge to derive their accurate calculation procedure through engineering experience. Therefore, it is particularly important to carry out quantitative research on heat and humidity load. This study used Design Builder software to study the influence of the design state point of air conditioning in underground buildings on energy consumption. The study showed that compared with the single design temperature of… More >

An Analysis of the Dynamic Behavior of Damaged Reinforced Concrete Bridges under Moving Vehicle Loads by Using the Moving Mesh Technique

Fabrizio Greco*, Paolo Lonetti, Arturo Pascuzzo, Giulia Sansone

    Structural Durability & Health Monitoring, Vol.17, No.6, pp. 457-483, 2023, DOI:10.32604/sdhm.2023.030075

Abstract This work proposes a numerical investigation on the effects of damage on the structural response of Reinforced Concrete (RC) bridge structures commonly adopted in highway and railway networks. An effective three-dimensional FE-based numerical model is developed to analyze the bridge’s structural response under several damage scenarios, including the effects of moving vehicle loads. In particular, the longitudinal and transversal beams are modeled through solid finite elements, while horizontal slabs are made of shell elements. Damage phenomena are also incorporated in the numerical model according to a smeared approach consistent with Continuum Damage Mechanics (CDM). In such a context, the proposed… More >

Abstract A Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) is a critical device for diesel engine exhaust products treatment. When using active-regeneration purification methods, on the one hand, a spatially irregular gas flow can produce relatively high local temperatures, potentially resulting in damage to the carrier; On the other hand, the internal temperature field can also undergo significant changes contributing to increase this risk. This study explores the gas flow uniformity in a DPF carrier and the related temperature behavior under drop-to-idle (DTI) condition by means of bench tests. It is shown that the considered silicon carbide carrier exhibits good flow uniformity, with a… More >
