    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.10, No.2, pp. 487-510, 2022, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2022.017275 - 30 August 2021

Abstract The Moso bamboo, a renewable green building material used in various new green buildings, have received extensive attention with the promotion of the concept of green buildings. To explore the mechanical properties of Moso bamboo connections with external clamp steel plates, the 16 specimens were designed by changing the bolt diameters and the end distances of the bolt holes. Their static tension tests were conducted to investigate bearing capacities and failure modes of different connection configurations. Based on test results, three failure modes of these connections were obtained, including the shear failure of bolt shank, More > Graphic Abstract

Abstract Over the past decade, the physical and mechanical performances of laminated bamboo lumber (LBL)–a bamboo-based structural material, have been extensively studied using experimental, analytical, and numerical approaches. This paper presents a review of existing knowledge in the literature about the mechanical properties of LBL. The paper involved the review of the response of LBL to different types of loading such as tension, bending, compression, and shear. Based on results of the literature reviewed, the strength of LBL parallel to grain was 90–124 MPa with MOE of 10700 MPa in tension, 29.55–72.60 MPa, and MOE of 8396–11022 MPa in compression,… More >

Abstract In this research, some practical aspects of densified wood glulam were investigated. For this aim, poplar wood specimens were densified by hygro-thermo-mechanical technique. Glulam specimens were produced by finger joint technique and polyurethane glue was used as resin. Physical and mechanical properties of glulams were investigated according to ASTM D 143-09, ASTM D 905-03 and ISO 8375 standards. Based on obtained results, using this process (steam and pressurize compaction) resulted in improvement of physical and mechanical properties of glulam specimens. Optical microscopic and scanning electron microscopic (SEM) pictures were proved structural changes on wood material… More >

    Zaibo Zhou1, Juanhong Liu1,2,3,*, Kun Luo1, Aixiang Wu1,3, Hongjiang Wang1,3

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.10, No.2, pp. 373-384, 2022, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2022.016380 - 30 August 2021

Abstract In order to reduce the influence of impurities in hemihydrate phosphogypsum(HPG) on the environment and improve the workability of HPG, the effects of the content of quicklime and types of biopolymer (hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, xanthan gum, sodium polyacrylate(PAANa)) on the compressive strength, softening coefficient and ultrasonic velocity of HPG were evaluated. When the content of quicklime was 1.5% and the content of PAANa was 0.2%, HPG had the best mechanical properties and workability, its water retention rate can be increased by 5.8%, and unconfined compressive strength of 3 days increased by 10.3% and 7 days increased More > Graphic Abstract

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.10, No.1, pp. 75-88, 2022, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2022.017759 - 27 July 2021

Abstract The development of alternative wood composites based on the use of waste or recycled materials can be beneficial due to over exploitation of natural resources. Under this frame, an option for the successful utilization of waste polystyrene which avoids environmental problems that formaldehyde adhesives cause and also reduces waste disposal, is its potential application as a binder for the production of value-added environmentally friendly and low cost wood composites. Two types of panel were successfully made, consisting of wood dust and two recycled polystyrene contents, namely, 15% and 30%. Both physical properties, water absorption and… More > Graphic Abstract

CLT Fabricated with Gmelina arborea and Tectona grandis Wood from Fast-Growth Forest Plantations: Physical and Mechanical Properties

    Freddy Muñoz1, Carolina Tenorio1, Róger Moya1,*, Angel Navarro-Mora2

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.10, No.1, pp. 1-17, 2022, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2022.017392 - 27 July 2021

Abstract Fabrication and use of Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) using tropical woods is still limited at present. Therefore objective of the present study aims to determine the possibility of using CLT panels of 3 and 5 layers, fabricated with Tectona grandis and Gmelina arborea wood using adhesive of isocyanate polymer emulsion system catalyzed with polymeric isocyanate. Delamination, water absorption, density, flexure test, compression and glue-line shear were evaluated using ANSI/APA PRG320-2012 ASTM D198 and ASTM D4761 standard. The results showed that CLT panels of T. grandis presented higher values of density, less water absorption and lower delamination, with no… More >

Mechanical Properties and Constitutive Relationship of the High-Durable Parallel Strand Bamboo

    Yousef Y. Sewar1, Zhancheng Zhang1, Xinmiao Meng1,*, Mohammed Y. Wahan1, Hanxiao Qi1,2, Qahtan M. Al-Shami1,3, Shijiao Luo1

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.10, No.1, pp. 219-235, 2022, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2021.016013 - 27 July 2021

Abstract Engineered bamboo has recently received lots of attention of civil engineers and professional researchers due to its better mechanical performance than that of softwood timber. Parallel strand bamboo is one important part of engineered bamboo for its excellent durable performance compared to the laminated veneer bamboo. The required curing temperature in hot-pressing process is usually higher than 120°C to reduce the content of nutritional ingredients and hemy cellulose, and to avoid the decay from the environment and insects. Nonetheless, the appearance of engineered bamboo gets darker with the increase of temperature during the hot-pressing process.… More > Graphic Abstract

    ASIS K. MANDAL1, DEBABRATA CHAKRABORTY2, MAHUYA DAS3, SAMIR K SIDDHANTA4,*

    Journal of Polymer Materials, Vol.38, No.1-2, pp. 21-34, 2021, DOI:10.32381/JPM.2021.38.1-2.3

Abstract Elastomeric chlorosulfonated polyethylene (Hypalon) and thermoplastic polypropylene (PP) based thermoplastic Vulcanizates (TPVs) were prepared in presence of different doses of partial methyl ester of styrene-maleic anhydride copolymer (PMES-MA) as compatibilizer employing dynamic vulcanization technique. The mechanical analysis of the prepared TPVs exhibited significant improvements in stress at 25% modulus, ultimate tensile strength (UTS), and hardness values. FTIR studies revealed that a chemical interaction had taken place between hypalon and compatibilizer during the process of dynamic vulcanization which led to an enhancement of interfacial adhesion between them. The two-phase morphologies were clearly observed by scanning electron More >
